How to apply for PhD Biotech admissions 2020 at Regional Centre for Biotechnology

About RCB

Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), an autonomous educational, research and training institute, was established by Government of India. The National Institute was started under the auspices of UNESCO and DBT, India. It got statutory status after the Regional Centre for Biotechnology Bill, 2016 passed by the Parliament. RCB is a leading institute for research in Biotechnology covering broad research areas like Molecular and Cellular Biology, Bioengineering, Biomedical Sciences, Biophysics, Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Regulatory affairs in biotechnology, IPR and policy issues, environment and agriculture etc. RCB is famous for a world-class education, training and research. Advanced Technology Platform Centre (ATPC) developed at RCB is a highly sophisticated instrumentation facility. RCB has also established a Bio-incubator with the association of BIRAC for commercialization of its research outcomes to promote biotechnology entrepreneurship. Its laboratories are also an example of state-of-the-art research with global standards.

Details of PhD programme

  1. The RCB institute offers a doctoral programme in Biotechnology. Any post-graduate student having a degree in any field of Science, medicine, or technology is admissible.
  2. The PhD programme is available in the multiple disciplinary areas related but not limited to structural biology, molecular medicine, infectious disease biology, agricultural biotechnology, systems and synthetic biology, cancer & cell biology.
  3. Interested candidates can get the details of the various research programs at the website of RCB.
  4. The selected students will undertake their research by following the steps:
    • They will have to complete a course work.
    • Preparation of doctoral thesis under the mentorship of its faculty.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Qualifications: The candidate must hold a post-graduate degree in any branch of science, medicine or technology including MSc/MTech in Life Sciences/Chemistry/Physics, or MPharm/ MVSc/ MBBS or an equivalent degree.
  • Qualifying Marks: 60% aggregate marks or equivalent grade in the qualifying degree examination. A relaxation of 5% will be given to SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates as per the GoI norms.
  • No. of seats: Total seats are 25.
  • Reservation of seats: As per the Government of India rules.
  • Apart from that, candidates must have qualified any of the following examinations and hold a valid fellowship at the time of interview:
    • Joint CSIR-UGC exam for Junior Research Fellowship (CSIR-UGC JRF)
    • DST- Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research scheme (DST-INSPIRE)
    • DBT- Junior Research Fellowship (DBT-JRF)
    • ICMR -Junior Research Fellowship (ICMR-JRF)
    • Any other national level competitive fellowship offered by the Government having a valid fellowship for a period of 5 years

Selection Process

Selection of the candidates will be based on the written test and / or personal interview. Only eligible candidates will be informed and called for a written test and/or interview.
It is to be noted that in case of any false or misleading information provided by the candidate in the application form or non-possession of essential qualifications noticed at any stage of the selection process will lead to disqualification or cancellation of admission of the candidate. The decision of the Competent Authority at RCB shall be final and binding in this regard.

Fee Structure for PhD Programme

For admission under this PhD programme, the students will have to pay the following fees:
  1. Laboratory Fees: Rs. 6000 per semester
  2. Tuition Fees: Rs. 6000 per semester. To be submitted in 1st & 2nd Semester only.
  3. Academic Administration Fees: Rs. 5000 per semester
  4. Medical Fees: Rs. 3000 per semester
  5. Student Amenities Fees: Rs. 1000 per semester
  6. Caution Money: Rs. 5000. It is to be submitted once, at the time of admission. It is refundable.
  7. Thesis Examination Fees: Rs. 10000. This is a one-time fee to be submitted at the time of submission of the thesis.
  8. Hostel security and other charges: To be paid by the students who will be availing hostel facility.

Fellowship During the PhD

The students who will seek admission in this programme will have to avail the national level fellowship. It is also a mandatory requirement for admission to the programme. Provided that RCB will have no financial liability for the same.

How to apply

  1. Application process: For PhD admission, online form can be filled by visiting the website of RCB.
  2. First of all, the candidate will have to sign up through new user registration by entering details like full name, date of birth, gender and email ID.
  3. After successful registration, the candidate must log in the website using login credential received on email and then fill all the requisite details.

Application Fee: An application fee of Rs.500/- is to be submitted online.
Note: SC/ST /PwD/EWS candidates are exempted from application fee payment.
Deadline: The last date of submitting online applications is 15th June 2020.
Date of Written Test /Interview: During 02-03rd July 2020.
