The Assistant Registrar of Academics, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (NIT) has announced the new schedule of admissions to the Masters of Arts program in Development Studies for the academic session 2020-22. The Department of Humanities & Social Science of NIT Rourkela is offering the M.A. in Development Studies course which is of two years' duration over a span of four semesters. A unique feature of this course is that if you are employed or self-employed in an organization or industry in or around Rourkela, you can pursue this course over the duration of four years. The eligibility criteria and other requirements, as well as the selection process, is the same as for the two-year course.
There are totally 39 seats for the course, out of which 14 are for General category applicants, 10 are for the OBC category, six are for the SC category, three are for the ST category, two are for the OPPH category (Open Category Physically Handicapped), and four are for EWS category.What you will learn
This course that leads to a postgraduate degree in Development Studies is an interesting one because you are learning about a wide range of aspects related to social and behavioural science. You get to know about socio-economic problems, acquire a sensitivity to human values, and study various facets of development issues. The learning modules help you to know how to make questionnaires through the use of survey tools that are effective in acquiring relevant data. You gradually understand, too, how to use statistical tools and relevant software to analyze the information that has been collected. Last, but not least, you develop communication and leadership skills. Overall, the course gives you an all-round professional education because of the multi-dimensional approach and gives you an edge to be successful in Civil Service and other competitive exams.
M.A. in Development Studies course fees The total fee for the first semester is Rs. 60,000/-. For every semester to follow after that, the fee will be Rs. 42,500/-, this including the Mess Advance fee. In the case of SC/ST students, this will be Rs. 35,000/.

Eligibility requirements
You should have a Graduate Degree from a recognized university which should be a B.Tech. or B.A. or B.Sc. or B.Com. Degree with a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying exam or 5.5 /10 CGPA (this is based on all semesters/years). In the case of B.A., B.Sc. and B. Com. candidates, those with Honors will be given preference.
If you are appearing for the final year qualifying exam, then you can apply as well for admission to the M.A. in Development Studies course and can get provisional admission, but are required to produce the final result no later than 30th September 2020. If you do not do so, then your admission will be cancelled and your fees will not be refunded (including the caution deposit fee). How to apply
You must submit the application in online mode only at the official admissions portal of NIT Rourkela. Before doing so, however, ensure that you go through the guidelines for filling up the online application.
You also need to pay the application fee of Rs. 500/- through a Demand Draft (DD) drawn in favour of "Director National Institute of Technology, Rourkela" which is payable at Rourkela. This fee is not refundable.
On successfully submitting the online application, take a print out and send a hard copy of the signed application form along with the Demand Draft to:

In case you are called for an interview, you must submit the following documents to the Head of the Department at that time: (i) A signed copy of the application form that you submitted online; and (ii) a set of Xerox copies of all the academic certificates starting from H.S.C. (Class 12) onwards. You will also be required to produce all the original certificates from H.S.C. onwards at the Academic Office of the institute during the document verification process at the time of admission.
If you are claiming reservation under SC/ST/OBC/PH/EWS quota, then you are required to produce a valid certificate in the prescribed format available at the official website. Note that the EWS, OBC and PH certificate, as applicable, should have been issued on or after 1st January 2020.
