Applications open for AI/ML in Earth Sciences by Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), GoI

If you want to extend your research in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, you can go for this programme offered by Ministry of Earth Science, Government of India. About MoES

In 1981, the Cabinet Secretariat established the Department of Ocean Development (DOD), which was later in 1982 became a separate Department and functioned as a nodal ministry for coordination, organization and promotion of activities of ocean development in the country. The Department of Ocean Development was apprised as to the Department as the Ministry of Ocean Development by the Central Government in 2016 which was further revamped and created the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). The MoES has the administrative control over Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) and provide for information on climate, weather, hydrology, ocean and coastal state, seismology, and natural hazards etc.

About Scheme

For the promotion of research on the application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) in the field of earth sciences, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has engaged scientists and researchers who are working on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) so that they can provide some inputs and helps in the development of novel ideas and approaches to addressing the wide range of problems. Project proposals have been invited by Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) from interested universities, research and academic institutions. Funding will be provided for focused research areas for possible application of AI and ML techniques.

Focus Areas

The main focused research areas of the possible application of AI and ML techniques are as follows:
  1. Post-processing of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) products
  2. Monsoon forecasting from sub-seasonal to seasonal time scales
  3. Urban flooding & Hydro-meteorological applications
  4. Prediction of extreme events such as Heavy Rainfall, Heat Wave, Cold Wave
  5. Drought Prediction
  6. Prediction of thunderstorm or lightning
  7. Agro-meteorological applications
  8. Different sectoral applications like power, tourism, health etc.
  9. Forecasts of Ocean state
  10. Potential Fishing zone advisory applications
  11. Climate change projections
  12. Fog Prediction
  13. Geosciences and Seismology
  14. Hydrology
  15. Big data analytics in a model, observed, satellite and reanalysis data
  16. Any other related topic.


Benefits of Programme

  • All the successful proposals will be provided limited computational resources and storage facilities available at MoES.
  • In case of availability of any relevant project data with the MoES institutions, will also be provided to the Project Investigators free of cost.
  • Before the closure of the projects, all the AI/ML applications which will be developed as a result of MoES support will be transferred to MoES Institutions for real-time use.


How to Apply

  1. Interested applicants may prepare and submit their proposals and can submit to MoES.
  2. Application and proposal is to be submit through Project Management System.
  3. The research proposals must include the details of investigators and budget.
  4. Format of proposal and guidelines are available at the official website of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and can be downloaded from there.
  5. A proposal with all mandatory details should be submitted through email: moes-reachout@gov.in

The Last Date of SubmissionThe last date for submitting the completed proposals is July 01, 2020
