The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) has announced admissions open for its 36th batch of the Post Graduate Diploma course in Packaging. IIP is an autonomous body established by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, and is also one of the founder members of the Asian Packaging Federation (APF) and the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).

Overview

The PG Diploma course in packaging is a two-year program that provides a comprehensive curriculum of all the varied aspects of packaging with a focus on industry-oriented teaching. Graduates who successfully completed the course have got job placements in prominent companies, including those in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, the pharmaceutical industry, the food industry, the agriculture sector, etc. Work opportunities abound in both, the private and Government sectors. There 280 seats at the Mumbai campus, 100 at Delhi, 80 at Kolkata, and 40 at Hyderabad. 27% of the seats are reserved for OBC candidates, 15% for SC candidates, and 705% for ST candidates.



IIP infrastructure and PG Diploma course curriculum

The in-depth course curriculum incorporates both, theoretical sessions in the classroom as well as practical modules in the state-of-the-art campus labs. These labs include ones for testing materials and consumer packaging, an optical and barrier properties' lab, a chemical lab, a transport lab, etc. The computer lab has been updated with the latest software and students get CAD training here. IIP also has an excellent library with textbooks pertaining to the syllabus, hard-bound technical journals, national and international periodicals, seminar reports, dissertations, etc. Both students and faculty have access to reprographic facilities.

In keeping up with contemporary requirements of the industry, the syllabus now includes newly introduced subjects such as eco-regulation, computer-aided design, and mould design. Developing communication skills and one's personality are also undertaken. In the initial first year, students have to Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. In the later years, they learn about packaging materials, such as paper and plastics, glass and metals, etc. The management aspect, too, is covered, wherein students learn about quality management, marketing, and financial management, etc. Students also get a first-hand insight into the packaging industry through field visits at industrial units during the first two semesters. It is in the fourth semester that each student works hands-on at an industry for five months, at the end of which the student has to submit a project work report. At the end of this semester, reputed multinational companies and private firms are invited for the campus placement drive. However, students who do not have 90% attendance will not be permitted to appear for the campus interviews.



Meritorious students are eligible for medals and certificates. Beyond academics, students participate in recreational and sports activities and bring out their talent through technical competitions and cultural ones as well in the annual program called 'Packfest'.

Hostel accommodation is not available on the campus, but for students studying at the Mumbai campus, there are limited separate accommodation facilities for students who do not reside in Mumbai on a twin-sharing basis for both boys and girls. Mess facility is included.

Eligibility requirements

Age criteria

The student applying for admission should be not over 30 years of age as on 29th May 2020. This is relaxed by three years for OBC candidates and by five years for SC/ST candidates.

Educational qualification

Students who have educational qualifications obtained through a correspondence course or through a part-time course are not eligible for the course. The qualification that is required is a pass in a full-time Graduate program' final exam in Science with Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics Microbiology or Biochemistry as the main subject, or one of them as the second subject in the three-year degree or Agriculture/Food Science/Polymer Science or Engineering/Technology degree of an AICTE/recognized University with minimum second class.

Students having an overseas qualification with consistently high academic performance and sound general knowledge can also apply for the course. In the case of students who are appearing in the final year of the qualifying exam and are seeking admission, they need to submit the results/ provisional results (as given by the University) latest on the day of the personal interview and selection.

How to apply

Candidates seeking admission to the course should first go through the prospectus which contains details on the campus infrastructure, eligibility requirements for the course, and instructions on how to apply.

You can obtain the application form, syllabus and the prospectus from any of the regional centers of IIP on payment of Rs.500/- in cash or by Demand Draft in favor of "Indian Institute of Packaging" payable at the respective centers of IIP. Due to the COVID-19 situation students are encouraged to apply online at the official website of IIP and make the payment of the application fee online itself. Take a printout and attach all the required attested certificates and mark sheets, photos, etc. along with the Demand Draft (if not paid online) and submit it to the Mumbai campus or one of the regional centers.

Written Exam and Interview

Admission to the course is through an entrance exam at Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Delhi. The written test (PGDP-CET) is based on the syllabus of the graduate level, with the multiple-choice questions covering Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Engineering. On successfully clearing the written exam, you will be called for a personal interview at the Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Hyderabad centers of the IIP.

First Semester: 3rd August to December 2020.
Second Semester: 1st February to June 2021.

Campus placement: July 2022.
