Invictus

Invictus is a powerful story of forgiveness, inner strength and willpower. Although the movie revolves around one particular event of 1995 Rugby World cup, which was unexpectedly won by the South African team Springboks, it shows and teaches much more. Through the event of this tournament, the movie tells the story of South African president, Nelson Mandela, the great revolutionist who transformed the future of his country, by leading through example, his fiercely divided black and white nation and teaching a deep lesson in forgiveness.

In the movie, he talks about a poem "Invictus" by William Ernest which kept him inspired through difficult times during his 30 years in prison. It's an incredible true story of a great leader who inspired others through his life and encouraged us all to " live a life where we exceed our own expectations".

The Pursuit of happiness

This one gives us a pertinent lesson in resilience and determination. Based on the inspirational life story of Chris Gardner, an American businessman, it chronicles his journey through a period of extreme struggle wherein he rises to become a brilliant stockbroker from a homeless and penniless salesman. And whilst doing this he also lovingly and single-handedly raises his five-year-old son. On one end it is the story of a man's courage and strength and how he overcomes all odds to emerge a successful businessman and on the other, a tale of a father and son who share unconditional love and make beautiful memories even in the most trying circumstances. This true movie storey inspires us to believe in ourselves when no one else does.

Peaceful warrior

An adaptation of the book, The way of a peaceful warrior, it is the story of Dan Millman, a world-class gymnast and Socrates. Well not really, The Socrates here is but a wise man who guides and helps Millman in finding peace and meaning in his life and whom Millman lovingly calls so.
Socrates shares his wisdom and knowledge with Millman and teaches him inspirational lessons in life whilst emphasizing that, that our business in life is not to 'get somewhere' but to be here. That we need to be present in every moment of our lives, fully and deeply so that we truly live our best lives.
Inspiration drawn from the movie is to recognize the power of NOW and HERE while living our lives.

Eat, pray, love

This movie revolves around the story of a woman, Elizabeth Gilbert who doesn't seem to understand what she wants in her life. So she embarks on a journey to explore the world a little more and in the process explores, accepts and find herself too. She is a writer looking for inspiration for her new book and also for her new divorced life when life offers her more than she was looking for. While travelling through the countries of Italy, India and Indonesia (Bali), she discovers that if we are brave enough to leave everything behind and embark on a journey of self-discovery and accept ourselves with our flaws and shortcomings we will definitely discover the truth. The story inspires us all women to not to be afraid and move away from things and people who hamper our growth and our happiness.

Life is beautiful

Set in the times of world war ll here is an enduring tale of love and commitment of a father towards his son. Though they are amidst the most gruelling times of Nazi invasion, the boy and the father create their own beautiful world of hope, love and happiness. When the world around them is shattering to pieces and they are sent to the Nazi camps. The father creates a loving and protective ambience around his son so that he is unaware of his grim surroundings. A father's determination to shield his innocent son from the perils of the war speaks volumes of his unconditional love for him. It teaches us how when the world around us is falling apart we can bestow infallible love and happiness on everyone around us and build our own happy safe place and space, unaffected by the ways of the world.

A beautiful mind

Based on the true and inspirational story of a genius mathematician, John Nash, the story is about not winning in the world against people but of winning in your own mind against your inner devils. He is a paranoid Schizophrenic who becomes a slave to his own hallucinations becoming a great deal of trouble for himself and his family. He finally realizes the truth and determines to fight his battles and rise above them for the sake of his son and his wife, who stands by him through all the struggle. Though the hallucinations never go away he learns to live with them and also to direct his energies and power to learn and establish his career. Sometimes we just have to live with our weaknesses and focus all our attention to our strengths and opportunities and move ahead in life. This movie inspires us to do just that.

The Shawshank Redemption

This movie is purely and totally about sheer hope in the face of trials and tribulations. It is also a story of friendship that moves beyond mere camaraderie to companionship for life. Andy a banker is sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover and is sent to the Shawshank prison where he befriends Red an inmate. As Andy learns to navigate his way through prison life, he is also planning an escape from the prison very secretly and meticulously. It is the story that teaches a great lesson in hope and perseverance and how one can always find a way where there is a will. To quote a dialogue from the movie, Andy says, "Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing, ever dies".

Schindlers list

Again this movie is an adaptation of a book named 'Schindler's Ark' by an Australian writer. It a very moving Hollywood film based on World war ll and the holocaust. Though it may sound grim it is one of the best and very inspirational movies made on the holocaust and tells an exemplary story of a German who saved Jews. It tells the story of Oskar Schindler who is a German businessman and a member of the Nazi party but who is profoundly and deeply affected when he sees the execution of Polish Jews by Germans and makes a tremendous effort to save them. He employs the Jews in his factories to save them from dying at the concentration camps. It is a true story of love and compassion amidst war and hatred which inspires us all to do our bit for humanity.

This is a good compilation by the author. Hollywood is known for producing various movies on different subjects and people look up to it for newer and newer adventures. I have seen many of them and was much impressed by their content and cinematography. Though my taste is basically in mysteries and suspense I am equally impressed with the inspirational ones also. The problem with Hollywood movies is that those who do not grasp their pronunciation sometimes do not like to see these movies as the content does not get absorbed with the speed in which the narration is moving. Anyway, this difficulty is now overcome as subtitles are available in most of the cases and in fact, I have seen so many other language movies (like Korean) also subsequent to having this facility. Apart from what the author has mentioned in the article, I vouch for some more in this genre and they are - Rocky, 127 Hours, Freedom Writers, Amelie, Forrest Gump etc.
