Applications open for Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) -2020


Australian Government, Department of Education, Skills and Employment is offering Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship scheme for domestic as well as overseas students. About Australian Government Research Training Program

Individual universities run the Research Training Program (RTP) scheme on behalf of the Department of Education, Skills and Employment. The main objective of the RTP scholarship scheme is to support domestic as well as overseas students undertaking Higher Degree Research (HDRs) at Australian Higher Education Providers (HEPs) with flexible funding facility for the training. After RTP training students can make their career in academia and other sectors of the labour market. RTP scheme also promotes association between HEPs and industry.

Benefits of RTP Scheme

Under this international scholarship programme, a scholarship is awarded to the students based on the academic merit and research experience. They will get the following benefits:
  • Students will get tuition fees for high-quality research.
  • They will get a stipend for general living allowance.
  • They will also receive allowances related to the ancillary cost of research degrees.

Duration of Programme

For a doctoral degree, the duration of the programme will be a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of four years and for a Master's degree two years. Beyond this period, the RTP stipend scholarship duration will not be extended.
Note: Due to coronavirus pandemic affect the maximum period has been extended for four years and six months for doctoral students and two years and six months for research masters degree students, at the discretion of HEPs.

Stipend

Selected full-time candidates will be provided AU$ 28,092 (2020 rate) per annum (tax-free). The scholarship amount will be paid in fortnightly installments.

What is Eligibility?

To be eligible for an RTP International Stipend Scholarship (RTP Stipend, RTP Fees Offset or RTP Allowance), you must:
  1. An applicant must be enrolled as full-time in an HDR Study course at an Australian HEP.
  2. He/she can be a domestic student or an overseas student.
  3. A student should not be a recipient of any income to support the general living cost from any other source. However, income unrelated to the student's course of study or not supporting general living costs will not be taken into account.
  4. During the tenure of RTP scholarship, the student must not be receiving an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth designed to offset HDR fees.

How to Apply

  1. To read the details of RTP scheme please visit the official website of Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment.
  2. An applicant interested to apply must submit his/her applications for RTP Scholarships directly to participating universities. Name of the participating universities can be checked on the website of Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment. Application format, application and selection procedure varies from university to university.
  3. It is also suggested that applicants must read the Commonwealth Scholarship Guidelines (Research) 2017 and 2020 RTP details and conditions of grant of Australian Government for International Student Scholarship Application Guidelines of chosen University.
  4. Fill the application form after reading complete instruction included in the form itself.
  5. Attach all the requisite documents.

Supervisor Statement of Support

  • The applicant must obtain a Statement of Support from their Principal Supervisor and submit to the University.
  • There is no specific format for the statement of support available.
  • The maximum word limit for the statement is 500. It must include school research priorities, and level of support.
  • The statement of support must be submitted directly to Research Services by the supervisor via email to hdrdocuments@une.edu.au or it can be attached with the application by the student.

Referee Reports

  • Reports from two referees must be submitted by the students.
  • Referee reports must include the qualification of referees and must be able to comment upon his research work and relevant experience.
  • Contact details of the referees must be provided in the scholarship application.

Important Dates of RTP Round

An applicant must apply during the Scholarship Round Dates.
RTP Round starts Date: 18 May 2020
RTP Round Closing Date: 30 June 2020
