These courses are very useful for making a career in the shipping industry and especially in the merchant navy or material support services to offshore oil and gas exploration and exploitation. After doing the B.Tech. in maritime engineering which is one of the main courses in this segment one can apply for the merchant navy job in any shipping company. Job position in many areas has dwindled down but in this line still, some scope is there as the shipping industry is very big and can absorb a lot of people in it. In the beginning, one has to join in a subordinate position but slowly in about 15-20 years span, one gets to the position of Captain or master of the ship. The seafarer's job is tough not only from the point of view of staying on the ship but also from the point of view of strong isolation and seclusion for a period of so many years. The good point is that the salary of the seafarer starts with a minimum of Rs 30000 to 35000 per month while a shipmaster or captain earns around Rs 6 to 10 lakhs per month.
