Thapar Institute of Engineering and technology, in a recent notification, has revised the eligibility criteria and schedule for admission to the undergraduate programs in engineering. Find here in this article the changes as well as the last dates before which you need to apply for your chosen program. The latest guidelines are only applicable for admissions to the first year of its 4-year B.E./B.Tech programs as discussed below. Admissions to the lateral entry 2nd year admissions for diploma students and the other undergraduate and postgraduate programs stand as it is. It is also to be noted that the classes, beginning from September, will be held online.

About the institute

Thapar Institute of Engineering and technology, TIET, is a fully autonomous Deemed to be University. It is one of the oldest engineering colleges in Punjab. Established way back in 1956, it has a sprawling lush green campus of over 250 acres. The college offers numerous undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering. There are programs like MBA, MCA, MSc and MA. A good number of PhD programs are also offered. Other than for its engineering education, Thapar Institute of Engineering and technology is known for its pioneering work in the field of research and innovation. As per NIRF 2019 ranking, the institute ranked 23rd among the top 100 engineering colleges in the country. As a university too, it ranks 27th among the top universities. It ranks as high as 10th in India as per Times Higher Education University rankings 2020. It is also accredited with A+ grade by NAAC.

Revised admission criteria

As per the revised notification dated 09 July 2020, released by the institute, the admissions to the B.E./B.Tech programs for the current academic session starting in September 2020 will be entirely based on the candidates 10+2 marks. The merit list will be formed based on the aggregate marks of the candidates in 3 subjects, namely, physics, mathematics and any one among biology, chemistry, biotechnology or the technical vocational subjects as given below.

  • Multimedia and Web Technologies
  • Engineering Graphics
  • Information storage and Retrieval
  • Electronics
  • Electrical Maintenance
  • General Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Maintenance
  • Agriculture
  • Business Studies

Tiebreaker, if required: In case of any tie with the 10+2 marks, then the tiebreaker will be the percentile score of the candidates in JEE Main January 2020. If the tie still remains, further it will be broken by comparing the percentile score in math, physics and chemistry and in that order. If tie still persists, then marks in English paper in 10+2 will be compared. The final option will be the age of the candidates. Those older in age will be given higher preference.

Eligibility criteria


  • For admission to the undergraduate program of this institute, the students should have scored at least 70% marks in aggregate in 10+2 or an equivalent exam with physics, math and any one among the other subjects mentioned above. For SC/ST candidates, the required percentage is 65%.
  • The candidate should have passed 10+2 in 2018, 2019 or 2020.
  • He/she should be an Indian citizen with good moral character.
  • It is desirable that the candidate should have appeared the JEE Main January 2020.

Important dates (Revised)

These are the dates to be kept in mind while applying for the B.E./B.Tech programs.
  • Last date for applying: 31 July 2020
  • Display of selected candidates (1st list): 05 August 2020
    Fee deposit by such candidates: 06-10 August 2020
  • Display of 2nd list: 14 August 2020
    Fee deposit: 15-20 August 2020
  • Display of 3rd list: 24 August 2020
    Fee deposit: 25-28 August 2020
  • Final round of counselling: 15 September 2020
  • Commencement of online classes: 01 September 2020

In case of any vacant seats being left after the final rounds of counselling, then the balance seats will be offered through the results of JEE Main 2020. For necessary updates, the candidates need to monitor the institute website on a regular basis.

When you are on the home page, click on the tab that says 'Apply Now'. You will be then asked to register with the site by giving your name, mobile number and email ID. Once registered, fill up the form giving the necessary details and also upload the relevant documents. The application fees can be paid online as well as through a demand draft drawn in favor of Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology payable at Patiala.
