Tamil Nadu Engineering College Admissions 2020

Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2020 (TNEA 2020) is for admissions to the first year of the B.E. and B.Tech programs in the engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu. The admissions are under the supervision and guidelines of the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Government of Tamil Nadu. The application process is completely online. There are five stages to this online process. They are in the given order – online registration, filling of the online application form, verification of certificates, filling of online choices and finally confirmation of seat and provisional allotment. Through this application process, an engineering aspirant can obtain a seat in the following category of colleges.

  1. State government engineering colleges
  2. Aided courses in government aided private engineering colleges
  3. Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI)
  4. Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET)
  5. University departments and constituent colleges of Anna University
  6. Annamalai University
  7. Self-supporting courses in government aided engineering colleges
  8. Self-financing engineering colleges – surrendered seats

Programs offered


B.E./B.Tech – 4 years
B.E. (sandwich) – 5 years



Eligibility criteria

Following are the eligibility conditions for the above programs as on the last date of submission of online applications. It is to be noted that any change in the religion of the candidate or passing the qualification after the last date for submission, will not be considered.



Applicability of nativity criteria


  1. Candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu, having studied from class 8 to class 12 in a school located in Tamil Nadu are eligible to apply, without producing any nativity certificate.

  2. Candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu, having studied any one or more of the classes from class 8 to class 12 in a school located outside Tamil Nadu can apply by producing the nativity certificate. The nativity certificate should be in electronic or digitally signed format.

  3. Irrespective of their native state, wards of Central Government employees, working in Tamil Nadu continuously for the last five years, as on the date of application, can also apply. Supporting document from the employer should be produced in such cases.

  4. Children of Public Sector employees, irrespective of their native states can also apply. The parent should be working in Tamil Nadu for the preceding five years. A certificate to this effect, say an income tax return, PF slip, etc. to be produced.

  5. Children of officers of the All India Service Tamil Nadu cadre can also apply, by producing a self-declaration from the parent.

  6. Candidates belonging to other states, but studied from class 8 to class 12 in Tamil Nadu are eligible to apply. Such candidates need not produce any nativity certificate.

Candidates belonging to categories 2 to 6 will be considered under 'open competition'. Srilankan Tamil refugees too may apply for admissions under the open competition. For this, they will have to produce an identification certificate from the Head Quarters Tehsildar. If they are not registered with the refugee camp, then they need to produce their original passport, visa and the letter registered with the police station.

Additional requirements for marine engineering

For marine engineering branch, there are additional requirements as per The Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India notification. The requirements are as follows.

  • Pass in 10+2 or equivalent with at least 60% marks in aggregate of physics, chemistry and mathematics.
  • At least 50% marks in English in 10+2 or class 10
  • Age should be less than 25 years
  • Minimum height: 157 cm
  • Minimum weight: 48 kg
  • Colour vision should be normal

Candidates for marine engineering to ensure that they are medically fit and will have to produce a physical fitness certificate from a registered medical officer authorised by Director General of Shipping.

Candidates are required to visit the website of TNEA at regular intervals to know about the latest updates regarding the admission process.

Reservation of seats

The seats are reserved as per the following seven categories.

  1. Open competition (OC) – 31%
  2. Backward class (BC) – 26.5%
  3. Backward class, Muslim (BCM) – 3.5%
  4. Most backward class & denotified communities (MBC & DNC) – 20%
  5. Scheduled caste (SC) – 15%
  6. Scheduled caste (Arunthathiyars) – 3%
  7. Scheduled tribes – 1%

The candidates should be in possession of their community certificate in the form of a permanent card or electronic/digitally signed format. Not able to produce the certificate will result in the application being treated in the open competition category. For reservation purposes, Tamil Nadu native candidates will only be considered.

Special reservations

Other than the above reservations for the backward communities, there are some special reservations for the following category of candidates.

  • Children of ex-servicemen – total 150 seats
  • Eminent sports persons – Total 500 seats
  • Persons with disabilities: (percentage of seats)

Vision- 1%
Hearing impaired – 1%
Locomotor disability – 1%
Autism and learning disability – 1%
Multiple disabilities – 1%

The candidates should be able to produce the necessary documents in this regard. The details about the documents and the eligibility criteria for various disabilities can be obtained from the information brochure given in the website of TNEA.



Mode of selection

The selection of the candidates for the various programs will be based on the marks obtained by them in 10+2 in the prescribed subjects, i.e. math, physics and chemistry. The maximum subject marks will be reduced as follows. Mathematics 100, physics and chemistry combined 100. For different state boards, the subject wise marks of the candidates will be normalised to that of the Tamil Nadu state board, in order to give a level playing ground to all, irrespective of the board. For example, if the highest marks scored in math by a candidate studying in Tamil Nadu board is 100 and 80 is the highest marks scored in a different board, then for the other board, 80 will be considered (normalised) as 100. The common merit list will be formed after the normalisation of marks. Candidates having studied in other state boards may have to provide the highest subject wise marks scored in their respective boards.

Tiebreakers, if required:
In case of any tie in marks in the common merit list, priority will be given in the following order.

  1. Marks in mathematics
  2. Marks in physics
  3. Marks in fourth optional subject
  4. Date of birth – elder is given priority
  5. Random number assigned – higher number is given priority

Counselling:
Candidates based on their rank will be able to participate for counselling. Generally, there will be four to five rounds. The entire counselling procedure is an online one. The list of the eligible candidates for the particular round will be made available in the TNEA website. Before participating in the counselling, the candidates need to pay the initial deposit of Rs 5000 for general candidates and Rs 1000 for SC/SCA/ST candidates of Tamil Nadu. The fee is to be paid through online means. The candidates can then add their choices in order of their preference. After the choices are locked, the candidate will be allotted the choice based on the ranking and the order of preference. Once the candidate accepts the allotment, he/she has to quit the counselling and then report to the allotted college for further admission. The balance fee is to be paid during admission.

How to apply

To participate in this admission process, candidates need to visit the official website of the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions portal. They will have to register before they fill-up the form and pay the necessary application fee. The fee is to be paid online either through net banking or debit and credit cards. The candidates need to be in possession of a valid mobile number and an email id for receiving notifications from TNEA from time to time. The certificates will have to be uploaded at a later date after the registration process. They will have to then get their original certificates verified by visiting a TNEA Facilitation Centre (TFC) on the given dates. Once the rank list is published, the candidates can then give their preferred choices. There will be then several rounds of counselling based on the rankings and the candidates will be provisionally allotted with a college and a branch.

The scanned copy of the original certificates to be uploaded on the given dates after the completion of the registration process.

  • Admit card/hall ticket for 10+2
  • Transfer certificate from the school last studied
  • Nativity certificate in electronic format and digitally signed, for those applicable
  • Category certificate for the reserved category students
  • Certificates as applicable for wards of ESMs, eminent sportspersons and candidates with disabilities
  • Applicable certificate for Srilankan Tamil Refugees
