About IACS

The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), a registered society is located in Kolkata, West Bengal in India. The institute is recognised for higher learning and was established in 1876. It has a Governing Council which is responsible for all the functions, and policies of the institute. The institute is well-known for fundamental research in basic sciences.

About Joint MSc-PhD Program

A joint program in MSc-PhD has been offered by the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITKGP) and Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS). Integrated MSc-PhD Program is available in "Chemical and Molecular Biology". In this program, research courses work includes multi-disciplinary courses and the students will participate in course work in both the institutes. On obtaining higher CGPA than the stipulated limits in the MSc course, the candidates will be admitted to the PhD program.

Eligibility

  1. The candidates must have a good academic record. They must have the first division in 10 and 10+2 level.
  2. Candidates should hold BSc in Life science (any branch) or Chemistry with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks for General/EWS/OBC-NCL category candidates and a minimum of 50% aggregate marks for SC/ST and PwD category candidates.
  3. In case of grades/CGPA system, the candidate should score at least 6.5 CGPA in 10 point scale. If the degree awarded on the basis of CGPA, conversion of CGPA into marks will not be accepted.
  4. The candidates who have appeared in the final year examination are also eligible to apply but their final selection will be subject to securing the required percentage of marks in the qualifying examination. They will have to submit a proof of Qualifying Degree with the Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQ) by October 31, 2020 as specified by the admitting institute.
  5. The candidate should have passed JAM (Biotechnology) or JAM (Chemistry) conducted in 2020 and based on the rank in these exams intake capacity will be decided. There will be seat reservation as per MHRD norms.

Fellowship and other benefits

There is a provision of fellowship for the selected students under this joint program. In the first two years of the program, admitted students will receive a consolidated stipend of Rs. 12,000/- p.m. subject to adequate performance and other rules of the Institutes. After the successful completion of the MSc course, students obtaining a higher CGPA may be considered for the PhD program following the existing norms of the institute. Students will get accommodation in the hostels of IACS Kolkata and IIT Kharagpur during the program period.

Application Procedure

  • Before applying for the course candidates must read all the instructions carefully given on website of IITKGP or IACS and check their eligibility and other conditions.
  • To fill applicants online the candidates are required to visit the online portal at IITKGP.
  • While applying online, keep scanned copies of all the self-attested copies of documents ready including mark sheets, certificates and JAM scorecard. These documents should be uploaded in the online portal.
  • Application fee: No application fee is required to be paid by the candidate.
  • Selection Procedure: Candidates will be shortlisted based on the performance and score in the JAM-2020 only in the subject area Biotechnology or Chemistry in order of merit.
