About India Alliance

Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and the Wellcome Trust, UK has co-founded a public charity named India Alliance. The Alliance funds research mainly in health and biomedical sciences in India. India Alliance supports innovative ideas and encouraging research to improve health and welfare.

About Early Career Fellowship Program

DBT/ Wellcome Trust India Alliance Early Career program is a mentored fellowship programme which gives a special opportunity to the talented young postdoctoral researchers to make their career in research independently by performing high-quality biomedical research in India. India Alliance is now inviting applications for its Early Career Fellowships in Basic Biomedical Research.

Fellowship Duration: It is a full-time fellowship for 5 years.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants are in their final year of PhD are eligible to apply for the Early Career Fellowship (ECF).
  • If the candidate has completed his PhD, he must not have more than four years of post-PhD research experience. The four years will be calculated from the date of PhD viva to the invited full application submission deadline i.e. tentatively in October 2020.
  • If a candidate has a break in the career with justified reasons, then his candidature will be considered.
  • The applicant must have a qualifying degree in any discipline of basic science.
  • No age restrictions are there for applicants.
  • Any national can apply for the ECF program. But he/she must be willing to start an independent research career in India.
  • Applicant will have to select a not-for-profit host institution in India for the fellowship. This institution will govern the fellowship as per the conditions and policies of India Alliance award for the full award duration of 5 years.
  • The applicant may or may not have a faculty position.
  • The candidates are encouraged to carry out their research in the institute other than their parent institution to promote independence in the researcher. But if there is any convincing reason to continue the research in the parent institution, then the candidate must present it appropriately in the preliminary application along with a letter from the supervisor with his comment.


Remit

  • Any branch of basic biomedical science from fundamental molecular and cellular biology to ecology and evolution and veterinary science will be considered.
  • Interdisciplinary projects will be preferred.
  • The proposed research work must be within the Alliance's funding remit, i.e. relevant to human and animal welfare. Any query in this regard may be forwarded to info@indiaalliance.org. It is suggested please send your CV and a summary of your proposed research along with the proposed research work-related query.


What are the Provisions?

ECF program will provide:
  1. The program gives fellow's personal support.
  2. Generous funds for research
  3. Travel and other allowances like support to work in an overseas laboratory for up to 2 years except in the first year.
  4. Support to develop international collaborations.
  5. Other India Alliance contributions.


How to Prepare Preliminary Application

  • Preliminary application must include a research proposal (maximum word limit 750 words) with a clearly defined answer to an original biomedical research question.
  • Details of fellowship supervisor who would guide the applicant in the proposed research. A letter from the supervisor is to be attached with the application.
  • A letter of recommendation from a person, other than the proposed Fellowship Supervisor, who can comment on the research work of the applicant.


How to Apply

There are two types of application invited:
  1. Preliminary application
  2. Full application

First, the preliminary application is called and based on that full applications are invited. N this round of ECF program, preliminary applications are open. The candidates must send their complete preliminary through India Alliance online application System (IASys) by the due date. The candidates are suggested to read carefully the user guidelines for filling the application form and know the submission process available on the website of India Alliance.

Evaluation of Preliminary Application

Preliminary applications are evaluated to:
  1. Check the eligibility of applicants and their research proposals
  2. Check that applicants are applying for the most appropriate scheme
  3. Advise on the competitiveness of the application
Note: If a candidate is not invited for a full application, he /she can re-apply to the same program subject to the eligibility criteria.

Points to Note

  • Cost in the ECF award will include a total cost requested by the applicant in the research proposal and the set contributions by the India Alliance. For further details, see costing policies.
  • Costs requested by the applicant must correspond with their research proposal and should be fully justified.
  • A technical support staff may also be requested in the program by giving a strong scientific justification and a letter from the proposed Fellowship Supervisor to verify the request. Salary for the support staff must be included in the budget and quoted as per the norms of the host institution.
  • Expensive equipment items request is not allowed. All the instruments must be available in the selected laboratory.
  • Early career fellows not holding a faculty position may not receive any other grant from any other sources during the fellowship period.
  • Early Career Fellows holding a faculty position at the Host Institution may hold other grants as Principal Investigator. They must spend 90% of their research time on India Alliance-funded research.
  • A maximum of two hours per week are permitted for non-research related activity during the Fellowship.

  • Start of Submission of Preliminary application: July 13, 2020 from 9 am onward
  • The end date of Submission of Preliminary applications: August 11, 2020 2 pm IST
