Note: Candidates with own fellowships (OF) can choose from both OF and FA seats, while candidates without own fellowships can choose only FA seats.

General Eligibility Criteria

Essential Qualification

Admission seekers to PhD programmes must fulfil the following eligibility conditions:
  • The candidates seeking admission to medical programmes must possess MBBS/BDS degree with at least 55% marks or MD/MS/MDS/DM/M.Ch in the subject concerned from the medical colleges recognised by the Medical Council of India or Diplomat of National Board of Examination.
  • To get admission for PhD admission in College of Nursing, the candidates should have M.Sc. degree in Nursing with minimum 55% aggregate marks.
  • For non-medical programmes, candidates must have two years of Master's Degree (M.Sc/M.Tech.) in the subject concerned with at least 60% marks from any recognised Indian Universities or equivalent.

Note:
  • Candidates who have acquired a Master's Degree through distance learning will not be eligible to apply for the PhD programme.
  • The candidates, who will acquire their qualifying degree by 31.08.2020, are also eligible to apply.
  • If any Faculty or Scientific Staff of AIIMs apply for PhD registration, then he/she will be considered as in-service candidates as per the guidelines of AIIMS.
    A candidate can apply for one department only.
  • Candidates who are working in Central Govt./Semi Govt./Autonomous organization should submit their applications through the proper channel and required to submit 'No Objection Certificate' from their employer to join the PhD Course.

Desired qualifications

The non-medical candidates who have qualified any of the National Level Entrance Exam in the last 2 years from the last date of submission of online application form will be given preference and given special weightage in the entrance exam. The National Level Entrance Exam may be:
  • Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF
  • ICMR – JRF
  • ICMR- SRF
  • DBT – JRF
  • NBHM screening test
  • Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)
  • DST -INSPIRE Fellowship

Duration of the Course

The duration of the PhD programme will be five years from the date of registration to thesis submission. However, an extension beyond this period of five years may be given to the candidate for a maximum period of 6 months on the recommendation of Dean Committee and final approval by Dean/Director. Beyond this period (5 years and 6 months) further extension may be given by the Academic Committee for a maximum period of 6 months in highly exceptional circumstances (like medical exigencies, natural calamities etc.).
If the candidate fails to submit his thesis within the stipulated time (5 years in normal cases, 5 ½ years with extension period and 6 years in special cases) the PhD registration of the candidate shall be cancelled.

Mode of PhD Entrance Examination: Examination will be conducted through CBT online modes.

Date of Entrance Exam: 21.08.2020 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM

Selection Procedure

The candidates will be selected for registration in the PhD programme based on the performance in entrance exam: It is a three-stage process:
A. Stage I: Total 30 Marks. It will comprise 30 MCQs of one mark each and will include Aptitude related MCQs covering English (Written and verbal skills), Biostatistics, Research Methodology, Cell Biology, Lab Technology etc.

B. Stage II: Total 40 Marks. It will comprise 40 MCQs of one mark each and will include Subject related theory based comprising Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) of MD/MS/MDS/M.Sc./M.Tech. Entrance level for Medical Candidates and Non-Medical Candidates.

Total Marks and duration of Stage I + II: 70 (30+40) and 90 Minutes

C. Stage III: To be eligible to enter Stage III, the candidate must score at least 35 marks in Stages I and II (Combined). The candidates who cannot fulfil this criterion will not be eligible for selection. In Stage III, the 3 times more candidates will be called for departmental clinical/practical/lab based assessment that will carry 20 marks.

Special Weightage: The candidates, who will fulfil both criteria i.e. Eligibility for Stage III and essential and desired qualification, will be given a special weightage of 10 marks.
Final Merit: Final merit will be prepared by adding Stage I+II+ Special weightage + Marks in Departmental Assessment.

Final Result: Candidates who secure 50% marks in Stage-I/II & III Combined (50/100) shall be eligible for admission.
Note: There will negative marking in Stage I & II. One-third (-1/3) mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. However, the Zero mark will be given for questions not answered.
