Dindigul is a medium-sized town, exactly 64 kilometers North of Madurai, the third largest city of Tamil Nadu. It is a district headquarter town and is a predominantly agricultural town. It is also a large trading center for over forty villages that surround it. It is close to the wholesale vegetable market in the nearby small town called Oddanchattiram. It was traditionally known for its manufacture of the locks that were used in the good old times. However, with mechanization of production of locks, Dindigul has lost the race. It has a fairly good number of good schools and a couple of engineering colleges. This town has excellent connectivity with all major towns of Tamil Nadu and is the transit point for passengers who are bound to the magnificent hill station of Kodaikanal, that is around two hours by car. This college is an autonomous college of the Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore.The college offers a wide variety of both conventional and the modern courses. Among the contemporary courses, it has reportedly made a big impact in the B.Sc (Visual Communication) course and the B.Sc (Computer Technology) course.
As is now a common feature among so many Coimbatore-based Arts and Science Colleges, this college also has a good number of job-oriented courses like the M.Sc (Electronics and Communication Systems) and the M.Sc (Computer Science) both of which are reportedly famous. It also offers the Diploma in Cyber Security course. This is another college that has become famous for its M.Phil courses in Commerce, Computer Science, Management, Tamil, Mathematics and Hindi. It also offers the doctorate degree facilities in Commerce, Management, Tamil and Hindi. Within a span of just two decades, this college has made a big statement of sorts in Coimbatore. It is well known for its unique courses. Particular mention should be made of the B.Com (Actuarial Management) course that is quite famous for its job-orientation.Unique Job-oriented and Business Administration courses
This autonomous college of the Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore, seems to be extremely keen on new courses. For instance, its B.Com (Capital Markets) is perhaps one of the very few in the entire Tamil Nadu. It is a well known fact that the equity culture is a way of life for citizens of Coimbatore and this course will surely add a fillip to it.
The Master's Degree in International Business (M.I.B) is also very famous. In fact, this course is now becoming quite famous throughout the country. Dindigul is just four hours by train from the city of Coimbatore. Yet, the difference between the two Coimbatore colleges and this college is so glaring. It has acquired a big reputation in the agricultural town of Dindigul through the conventional courses only. This is also an autonomous college of the Madurai-Kamaraj University and the college is reputed to have a firm grip and grounding in terms of quality faculty members, even in subjects like History.
There are some reports that this college has even produced a number of University rank holders and those who were intent on studies abroad, had even done the courses like M.Sc (Computer Science) are placed in leading IT companies in the USA. The two unique courses offered seem to be the B.Sc (Physical Education) and the B.Sc (Hotel Management and Catering Sciences). This quasi-Government college is reputed to be college of choice for so many parents and the strict discipline in this college is said to be a big plus.
The story of success of this college is similar to the experiences of other colleges quoted in the previous articles. When confronted with a semi-urban or rural environment to contend with, the authorities who manage these colleges are very keen to increase the quality of all conventional courses, year on year and thus cater to the demand of the local population. The GTN Arts College has good hostel facilities and it is reported that students from all the surrounding towns like Theni and Periyakulam regularly study in this college.

Given the fact that the two Coimbatore colleges have to compete with the likes of the prestigious P.S.G Arts and Science College, Coimbatore, to stay relevant, they have made all efforts to offer new courses and since they are autonomous colleges, they have been able to stay relevant and emerge as colleges of choice. On the other end of the spectrum, by adding value to the conventional courses, the college in Dindigul has also been able to make an impression. These three promising colleges complete a total of fifteen colleges that stand out for their unique core competencies.
