This is the last article in the series of six articles on the Promising Stars Among Arts and Science Colleges of Tamil Nadu. In this article, we will discuss the salient features of two Arts and Science Colleges from Madurai and one college from Tiruchirapalli in some detail.
Introduction
When a Government College has the distinction of offering a good number of M.Phil courses and the doctorate degree in an equal number of disciplines, that college would stand out for the standards of education. This is exactly what has happened to the Periyar EVR College, Tiruchirapalli. Such a college deserves attention. The other two colleges are the Madura College, Madurai and the Saurashtra College, Madurai. This is the last article in the series of six articles. The details provided in the six articles will be useful to any parent from any corner of the country who would like their children to study in high-quality colleges in Tamil Nadu.

This is an autonomous college of the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli. Quite contrary to the popular perception that Government colleges do not offer quality education, this college has made rapid strides in providing higher education to the backward students of the numerous villages in and around Tiruchirapalli. The fees charged by this college is a fraction of what is charged by the self-financing colleges in the private sector. The name of this college has a special significance. The Government of Tamil Nadu started this college and names it after the famous social reformer, the late EVR Periyar. This reformer had fought for several years to provide access to education and jobs to the disadvantaged sections of the society, that included the scheduled castes and the scheduled tribes.
This college offers the usual courses. However, those interviewed for this article uniformly said that this college has done a good job in each of the courses and the B.Sc. (Visual Communication) course and the Bachelor's degree in Statistics were singled out for special mention. The college offers post-graduate courses in the same disciplines. What is more impressive is the fact that the full-time and part-time M.Phil courses are offered in a variety of disciplines such as Tamil, English, Economics, Commerce, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Computer Science, Statistics and Visual Communication. Similarly, in each of these disciplines, the full-time and part-time doctorate courses are also offered and botany is a notable addition in the doctorate offerings.
This college stands out for the fact that it is the only Government college that has made rapid strides in the past few years in the district and even in the context of similar colleges in the surrounding districts. The M.Sc. (Biochemistry) and the M.Sc. (Yoga) courses are also on offer.
The positive opinions in favour of the Periyar EVR College Tiruchirapalli have enabled it to emerge as one of the important "colleges of choice" of the residents of Tiruchirapalli, the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu, with excellent connectivity by train to all parts of India.

This is one of the oldest colleges of Madurai city. It was established way back in the year 1854. This is one of the most famous colleges in the city and is a college of choice for the quality of its conventional courses.
Madurai still faces the problem of a typical semi-urban location and the students are those who come from the large number of villages that surround the city. They are mostly first-generation learners from farmer families. The colleges like Madura College are contended to offer the traditional courses and only courses like the B.Sc. (Biotechnology) and the B.Com. (Professional Accounting) and the Bachelor's degree in Sociology stands out for the slightly different courses. However, it offers the M.A. (Philosophy) course and is clearly a distinct college in this respect. The Madura College Madurai is a well-known autonomous college of the Madurai-Kamaraj University, with its ability to be somewhat different from other peers by increasing the quality of inputs in all its courses.
In fact, philosophy as a discipline is a very rich one and has tremendous scope for advanced research in India and in any part of the world. Philosophy offers deep insights into the mindsets of all people at all times and it adds to deep insights in sociology as well. This autonomous college of the Madurai Kamaraj University is another college of choice in the city of Madurai. However, it is not one college that offers new courses like the colleges in Chennai or Coimbatore. The main strength of this college is its ability to add value in terms of high-quality education in the conventional courses and then take that to the next level in terms of exceeding expectations.
According to those interviewed, the college is now quite famous for the standard of its MBA and the MCA courses. It has added tremendous strength to these courses by reportedly forging links to the industry. However, the college also seems to be different by offering Environmental Studies as a compulsory subject for all its undergraduate programs. Old students who were interviewed said that of late, the B.Sc. (Microbiology) and B.Com. (CA) courses, alongside the B.Com. (Corporate Secretaryship) courses, were quite popular among students. The reason is that there are good job opportunities in the pharma sector for microbiology graduates and it is reported that there are many students employed in the pharma companies at Hyderabad. The B.Com(Corporate Secretaryship) course is also popular, as it is seen as a passport to clear the ACS course.
The Diploma in Gandhian Thought offered by this college is also said to be popular. The M.Phil(Management) course is also finding a number of takers. What makes the Sourashtra College Madurai college that competes with the likes of American college in the city, a college of choice. It has a promising future.

It is clear that the EVR Periyar College has successfully established its name as a Government College in Tiruchirapalli and is unique for the wide range of courses. Though Madura College and the Sourashtra Colleges do not offer any new course, they have their own core competencies in the conventional courses. However, they belong to a slightly lower profile and the discussion about their attempts to improve their courses will be taken up in future articles.
