Introduction
CAT Exam known as Common Admission Tests is conducted every year by any of the Indian Institutes of Management for getting the selection for B Schools in the country. CAT is a mandate for qualification to the IIM institutes. Every year around 2.5 lakhs students register for this exam and every year the exam is conducted in the month of November and the results will be declared in the second week of January. Admissions for Management programs are through the Eligibility conditions scheduled by the IIM Admissions Committee and each year we are seeing 5 per cent of the students secure top ranks in the Exam.
Eligibility for CAT 2020
Candidate must hold Bachelors Degree with 50 per cent marks or equivalent and must be awarded by University or any institution which is approved by the state or any deemed University under UGC act of 1956. Must possess a qualification which is equivalent and recognized by the HRD Ministry.
For SC, ST and PWD categories a minimum of 45 per cent is the requirement for getting the admission. For EWS, General and NC-OBC categories the minimum is 50 per cent.
Those who are in the final year of Bachelors degree or appearing for the final year exam must complete degree requirements and those who are waiting for the results also can apply for the exam. For such candidates when selected will be allowed to join for the program and they must submit a certificate from the principal or from the university registrar stating that they have completed the requirements for obtaining Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification and date issued in the certificate.
The Marks obtained by a candidate will be calculated based on standards set by the Institution or the university. For CGPA or grades, the conversion to the percentage will be a standard set by the Institution of the University. If there is no scheme for converting into percentages, then it will be determined by dividing the CGPA of the candidate by the maximum CGPA and then multiplying the result with 100.
At each stage IIM will verify the eligibility for the selection process. The candidates must note that the mere eligibility provided will not be considered for shortlisting by IIMS. Throughout the process, the candidate must maintain a valid email account and phone number.
Reservation of Seats
15 per cent of seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste and another 7.5 per cent for the Scheduled Tribe candidates. 27 per cent of seats will be reserved for Backward Classes which belongs to non-creamy layer. 10 per cent of seats reserved for the Economically weaker section candidates.
The candidates those belong to the reserved categories must note the eligibility requirements before applying for the exam. Candidates those belong to SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PWD must pass the minimum eligibility requirements for considering for the admission process.
Candidates must go through the selection process which is given on the respective websites of IIM. There will not be any change after the registration of the CAT and the applicants must pay attention while registering for the exam.
For getting considered for reservations, central government list which is applicable is listed on the website,http://www.ncbc.nic.in. No changes will be made for CAT 2020 and selection process of IIM. According to the provisions, Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, the 5 per cent of seats will be reserved for persons with Benchmark Disabilities. Benchmark disability means that a person who is not less than 40 % specified disability certified by the certifying Authority.
The categories of specified disabilities are listed as follows.
Low Vision and Blindness.
Deaf and difficulty in hearing.
Locomotor disability which includes leprosy cures, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy.
Intellectual disability, autism, specific learning disability, mental illness.
When a candidate belongs to SC, ST categories the respective tribe or list must be listed in the Government of India schedule. Caste certificate must be submitted to IIM in the prescribed format of Indian Government and must mention the name of tribe or caste.
Copy of SC, ST, OBC, PWD certificates must be uploaded at the time of registration. Failure for uploading the caste or class certificate will result in rejection of CAT registration of the candidate.
The certificate of Reserved categories must be shown and a copy must be submitted at the interview time and the certificates must be submitted at the time of joining for the program. Failure in doing will result in the candidate not considered under the reserved category.
Candidates must understand the detailed description of the selection process listed by each IIM on their websites and no change will be done after the CAT registration. The candidates must devote utmost care while registering for the exam.
CAT Registration and Fees
For SC, ST and PWD candidates Rs 1000 and for all other candidates Rs 2000. Aspiring candidates must note that they need to pay the fees only once irrespective on how much colleges they apply for. SC, ST, PWD candidates must upload their copy of the caste certificate at the registration time. The fees once paid will not be refunded. CAT registration starts on August 5, 2020 and closes at September 16, 2020, at 5 PM. During the time of registration, the candidates must select any six test centres according to your preferences. After the last registration date, the candidates will be given one of the preferred cities according to the availability The CAT exam will be conducted in 156 cities and these test cities will be given in the CAT website and test centre name will be given in the Admit card. The candidate's CAT scorecard can be accessed from the website and also they will be informed via SMS. Usually, the CAT results will be declared in the January second week, 2021
Admission Process
The process includes Written Ability Test, Group Discussion, Personal Interview. Each IIM is independent in their eligibility criteria which includes the academic cut-offs and the relative weights and the selection process is different for each IIM. Performance in CAT 2020 is an important part of getting considered for the selection process. Some of the IIMs also consider the previous academic performance of candidates and related work experience. When a candidate is called for interview, they must submit mark sheets and must submit the self-attested copies for proving their eligibility at the interview time.
