Singapore International Graduate Award PhD admissions August 2021


Are you interested to pursue a PhD programme in Singapore? A*STAR and other institutes are offering PhD admission under the Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA) Program. Applications are invited from highly motivated candidates who wish to pursue a career in research in Singapore. Please read this article to know the details of program, eligibility criteria and scholarship details etc.

About the Programme

The Agency for Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) jointly providing a PhD opportunities to the students through the Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA). By getting SINGA, candidates will work in the world-class institutes and laboratories and will have guidance from eminent and world-famous scientists. The PhD degree will be awarded to the students by NTU or NUS or SUTD.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Any international graduates can apply for the SINGA award.
  • Candidates must be willing to carry out research in Singapore.
  • He/she must have excellent academic record.
  • He/she must be good in written and spoken English.
  • They should have good reports from academic referees.

Note: There may be some additional criteria for selection in PhD programme by A*STAR, which may be added without any prior notice.

Financial Support

The SINGA will provide financial assistance during whole PhD programme. It will include:
  • Tuition fees: Tuition fees will be covered in the SINGA award.
  • Emolument: S$2,000 will be paid per month to the PhD researcher. However, after passing qualifying exam, it will be increased up to S$2,500.
  • Travel Grant: S$1,500 will be paid to the researchers towards one-time airfare grant.
  • Settling-in Allowance: S$1,000 (one-time)

Note: Estimated cost of living in Singapore is approximately S$1,400-2,000 per month for on-campus students. These expenses are including food, outside campus meals, on-campus accommodation, transport expenses, and other expenses like stationary, laundry, toiletries, recreation, etc.

How to Apply

  1. To apply for the SINGA 2021, interested candidates must visit the official website of A*STAR.
  2. Go the 'Scholarship' option on 'Home page' on the website of A*STAR.
  3. Now from the drop down menu click on 'Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA)' in 'Graduate Studies'.
  4. Now apply for SINGA Award by click on 'Apply Now' option.
  5. The candidates will be re-directed to another web page for scholarship application and create an account.
  6. After log in, fill the application form.
  7. Select research area of interest for project.
  8. Upload the required documents.
  9. Submit the application form.

Documents to be uploaded

The candidates must keep the following documents ready before applying:
  1. A recent passport-sized photo either in .jpeg or .png format.
  2. Passport
  3. A Bachelor's degree transcript (in English) or a letter of certification from university
  4. A Master's degree transcript (in English) or a letter of certification from university
  5. GRE / IELTS / TOEFL / SAT I & II / GATE exam score (optional)

Important Note: Recommendation reports from (two in nos.) are to be prepared and submitted by the referees.

Important instructions

  • The candidates must check the details filled in the account registration form for SINGA award, as this information will be verified in first log-in. Further, no amendment in the details, once filled, will be permitted.
  • Applications will be submitted online only, hence, no need to send a hard copy.
  • Candidates should apply well before the due date. So that their referees can get enough time to submit their recommendation reports.
  • Only shortlisted candidates will be informed within 12 weeks from the application closing date.

Closing Date for Application Submission: 1 December 2020, 23:59 hrs GMT +8 Singapore time.
