Indian Institute of Science Centre for Brain Research PhD admissions 2020


Indian Institute of Science (IISc)-Centre for Brain Research (CBR) has announced the admissions open to full-time PhD programmes 2020. In this article applicants can check out the details on eligibility, scholarship, the application process, selection process and submission deadline etc.

About the Institute

Centre for Brain Research (CBR), Bangalore is a premier autonomous research institute of Indian Institute of Science. CBR got recognition for the PhD programme from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Karnataka and the PhD degree is also awarded by MAHE. Centre for Brain Research (CBR) supports research in basic and neuroscience by conducting advanced research on the ageing brain by using advanced techniques and also identifying the age-related brain disorders. Now CBR is calling applications from desirous students who wish to get admission to full-time PhD programs starting in October 2020.

Duration of Program:The candidates at CBR who are registered in PhD can submit their thesis after three years from PhD registration. However, a maximum of 6 years will be given to candidates to submit their thesis.

PhD Programme Fees:The candidates will have to pay a tuition fee of Rs.15,000/-, Statutory Deposit of Rs.7,500/- and other fees Rs.3,700/-.

Scholarship Details:Those candidates who have qualified any National Level Test for fellowships will avail the fellowships from their respective agencies. Other students who do not have any national fellowship and qualify for the interview process will be supported by CBR and they will get a stipend of Rs.31,000/- pm (first two years) and Rs.35,000/-pm (next three years).

Eligibility Criteria

  1. The candidates seeking admissions to PhD programme must possess a master's degree in any branch of science or bachelor's degree (4-year) in MBBS or any branch of Medicine or BE or B.Tech or Master's in Veterinary Science or Master's in Pharmacy or Biostatistics.
  2. The applicants who appeared in the final year exam can also apply.
  3. Students must be willing to work in the areas of the neurobiology of disease, human genetics, computational biology, magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy.
  4. The candidates who have qualified any of the national level fellowship tests such as CSIR-UGC NET for JRF/ UGC NET for JRF/ DBT-JRF/ ICMR-JRF/ JEST/ NBHM Screening Test/ INSPIRE fellows for PhD/ GATE etc. will be preferred.

  • The admission seekers must visit the official website of the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) for detailed information on the area of research, admission process and other details.
  • The candidate must check official notification before applying online on the admissions portal of CBR by the due date.

Documents Required

Following documents are required to be uploaded while applying online:
  1. Class 10th & Class 12th marksheets (PDF format, File size less than 2 MB)
  2. UG/PG consolidated marksheet (PDF format, File size less than 2 MB)
  3. A recent passport-sized colour photograph (JPEG or JPG format, File size: under 100 KB, Dimension: 200 x 230 pixels)
  4. Scanned Signature with black ballpoint pen on a white paper (JPEG or JPG format, File size: under 100 KB, Dimension: 140 x 60 pixels)

Admission Process

  • Screening of the applications of the candidates received through online submissions will be done by a committee at CBR.
  • Screening criteria will be based on the following factors:
    1. Academic background of the candidate.
    2. Skills of candidate
    3. National level exam score
    4. Other relevant experience

Selection Process

  • After the screening of the on-line applications received till the closing date, the candidates will be shortlisted and will be called for an online interview at CBR.
  • Candidates will be intimated about online interview via post and e-mail.
  • Final selection of candidates for the PhD program will be based on their academic record and also performance in the online interview.
  • Candidates can also check the website of CBR for a list of the selected candidate in the online interview.
  • Please note that the arrangement of accommodation and transportation will have to be made by the candidates.

End Date Application Submission: September 04, 2020
Dates of Online Interview: 21st, 22nd, 23rd, September 2020
Beginning of full-Time PhD Program: October 01, 2020

Will the shortlisted candidates for an interview be called or the list will only be uploaded on the website?

Shortlisted candidates will be called for an online interview. Online Interview will be held at the Center for Brain Research (CBR). You will receive intimation for the online interview through email or via post. Also, you will have to make all the arrangements for the stay to attend the online interview.
