The Indian Institute of Science(IISc) is one of the premier institutes in India that was established in the year 1909 as a higher education institute for advanced scientific and technological research and education. Every year, the IISc conducts summer internship programmes for the students who belong to science and engineering streams. The internship programs of IISc is supported by the University Grant Commission(UGC) and the Government of India. The duration of the internship is 2 months. After the successful completion of the internship, IISc will provide a stipend amount and an internship certificate. IISc Bangalore will provide accommodation at the college campus(only if rooms are vacant) and pay of Rs 5,000 to 12,000 in a month for all the summer interns. Through internship programmes, the institute encourages the students to undertake research careers. The internship certificate issued by IISc adds more value to the career of the students especially when they apply for research-oriented jobs or any other full-time jobs in a company/industry.
IISc in association with the Indian Academy of Science(IAS) also conducts a special internship program for the SC/ST students for a period of 1 month. SC/ST students who are pursuing B.E, B.Tech. or M.Sc. degree can apply. For this internship, the institute provides a cost-free boarding, a round trip train and bus fares and a fellowship grant of Rs. 4,000 to 5,000.IISc Divisions that offer internships

Only students who are doing their second or third year in B.E, B.Tech and B.Sc degree courses or those who are in the final year of PG courses like M.Sc, M.E, M.Tech can apply for summer internship program offered by the IISc. Based on their degree courses in engineering and science streams, the students can apply for the internships at any division/department of IISc. To apply for IISc internships, the students must have a minimum score of 80% in 10th, 12th and semester exams(up to the semester they have completed while applying). It is mandatory for the students to satisfy all the eligibility conditions mentioned by the institute in the official internship notification.

For every academic year, the IISc releases the official notification of their internship programmes at their official website. Even each department of IISc also lists their intern openings, under their department section at the official website. Aspirants can check the website from time-to-time to know the vacant positions of internships.
All the eligible candidates can apply for the summer internship programme by filling the IISc internship application form available on the official website of IISc. While filling in the application form, candidates should strictly follow the form filling guidelines as mentioned by the institute in their web portal and submit the filled-in application form. Along with the application form, candidates need to submit a reference letter issued by the Head of the Department(HOD) or the Principal of the College or senior faculty member of the department in a format prescribed by the IISc. Candidates should apply for the internship programme through online mode on or before the deadline.
Aspiring candidates also can directly write an email seeking internship opportunities to the professor of IISc whom they would like to work under. While sending an email, the candidates have to mention their area of interest and submit a statement of purpose. Also, candidates must send a letter of recommendation from their department faculty or professors while applying through e-mail.
For the IISc internships jointly conducted with academies such as IAS, Indian National Science Academy or National Academy of Sciences-India, candidates can download the internship application form from the official website of all these national academies. To apply for the internship, candidates must fill the downloaded application form and upload the completed form along with a cover letter explaining what they aspire to learn in the internship programme.

IISc is a prestigious institution in India and the students from all over the country will apply for the IISc internship programmes. Since it is a research-based programme, the competition will be very high and high potential is needed to get selected. The selection of candidates for the internship will be done by the committee of faculty of the concerned departments. The selection team will shortlist the applicants based on their academic qualifications, projects completed and vocational training attended. Also, the selection team will consider the recommendation letter, cover letter, statement of purpose(SOP) and the abstract submitted during the selection process. The institute gives significance to the selection of professors from the list provided. A candidate will be allowed to provide only 6 six choices for the selection of professors. If the choice of the candidates is wrong i.e. if the selection is irrelevant to the area of interest, then the institute will reject the internship application.
For the summer internship programme, the IISc will release the list of shortlisted candidates in the month of February or March. The shortlisted candidates will be called for a telephonic interview or a Skype interview with the professors of IISc. The interview will be focused on the student's field of interest, projects done, skills, etc. Through the interview process, the professors will test and evaluate the interests of the students in the field.
Candidates who are selected for the summer internship programme have to visit the concerned department at IISc, Bangalore campus on the specified date without fail and join the internship training after the certificate verification process.Roles and Responsibilities of an Intern
IISc will appoint a guide to each intern. The interns can gain experience and subject knowledge under the supervision of their guides. During the internship period, along with the experts, the interns will have to participate in the experiments associated with their selected topic of research or project topic. The interns will have to report daily and document all the work done during the internship research training.
