About Digital India Internship Scheme

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India has launched the Digital India Internship Scheme to provide internship opportunities for eligible candidates to work on information technology projects with the central government for a limited duration. Currently, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is concentrating on the electronic development through e-Infrastructure creation, promotion of electronics hardware manufacturing, development of e-skills, implementation of IT-enabled services and various other emerging areas of technology. So, to promote the learning process and to encourage the experimental knowledge of the students, the ministry is conducting the digital internship programme every year and allows the selected students to work in various government projects under the guidance of a supervisor or a mentor for a shorter period. Through this internship programme, along with the practical experience, the students can also gain knowledge of how the Government projects are implemented.



Eligibility criteria

Who can apply for the Digital India Internship Scheme? Candidates who satisfy the below mentioned educational qualifications can apply for the government internship programme.

  1. Indian Students who are studying in any recognized Indian Universities are eligible to apply.
  2. Students who wish to apply for the Digital India Internship must be pursuing their regular, dual degree or integrated degree courses (B.E/ B.Tech/MCA/ M.E/ M.Tech) in the branches of Computer Science/Information Technology/Electronics and Communication Engineering. Also, students who are learning DoEACC 'B' level certification are eligible for the internship.
  3. Engineering candidates who are in their final semester of the course are not eligible to apply for the Digital India Internship Scheme. B.E/ B.Tech regular students who are in their second or third year can apply. M.E/M.Tech graduates who are studying in the second or third semester are eligible to apply. The students who are doing their integrated degree course or dual degree course can apply for this internship only if they are studying in the fourth or fifth year.
  4. To apply for the internship, candidates must have secured at least 60% marks up to the last held semester exam or certification exam conducted by a recognized Indian University.
  5. Other than the above mentioned educational qualification, candidates are expected to have a good academic background and prior knowledge, technical skills or interests in the area of intended internship.


Duration

Digital India Internship programme will be conducted once a year. The duration of the internship is 2 months and can be extended up to 3 months. The duration of the internship may extend depending on the requirement of the Ministry, the performance of the candidate and the willingness of the intern. The internship will be mostly conducted in the month of May to July every year.

Remuneration

After completion of the internship programme on submission of a report duly accepted by the Ministry, interns will be given an internship certificate and a remuneration of Rs.10,000/- per month.

Areas of Internship

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology offers the Digital India Internship Scheme in the following areas. Each area will have minimum vacant slots and the interns will be called to apply for the internship only if there are any vacancies. The areas of internship and openings may vary depending on the requirement of the government projects.



Technology areas of internship- Cloud Computing, Cyber Law/ IT Act, Digital Forensics, Digital Payments, Digital Literacy, EMI / EMC Testing, Electronic Equipment Safety Testing, Electronic Equipment Function Testing, Hardware Industry, Geographic Information System (GIS), Mobile Governance, Malware Analysis, R&D in Electronics, Quantum Communication, R&D in Information Technology, Wi-Fi, 5G and so on.

How to apply

The notification of the Digital India Internship Scheme for every academic year will be released on the official website of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The ministry will usually invite internship applications from the students during April month every year. Eligible students can visit http://meity.gov.in/schemes and apply for an internship.

At first, candidates have to register themselves as an applicant and then login using their credentials to fill the internship application form. Candidates must fill all the fields in the application form in the prescribed format and have to upload their recent passport size photo and a copy of their signature in .png or .jpg file format. While applying for the Digital India Internship Scheme, it is mandatory for the candidates to submit a Recommendation Letter from Sponsoring/Forwarding Institution where the applicant is studying.

Selection process

After the submission of the application form, the respective organization, divisions or groups will process the filled-in forms and shortlist the candidates suitable for their concerned domain. For the selection of interns, a Skype interview or personal interview may be conducted. No Travelling Allowance(TA) and Dearness Allowance(DA) will be paid for the candidates who are called to attend the personal interview. The final list of selected students for the internship will be published at the official web portal of the Ministry. The selected students will have to send their confirmation for participation in the internship. The students who have confirmed their participation will be issued a confirmation letter for the internship. The candidates who are selected for the Digital India Internship will be allotted the internship projects in New Delhi.

Role of interns

Each intern or a batch of interns will be assigned a Scientific/Technical Project Supervisor/Mentor from the Ministry. The interns have to adhere to the work plans and work schedules developed by their Supervisor or Mentor. During the internship period, the interns have to report on a daily basis and have to complete the task assigned to them. After the completion of the internship, interns must submit a report to the Ministry on the work they have undertaken. Along with the soft and hard copy of the project report, the interns should also submit a "No Demand Certificate" to the Ministry in the prescribed format. The final project report prepared for the Ministry and the Sponsoring Institution(the college where the intern is studying) should be identical in all aspects.



Note: No accommodation will be provided to the interns during the internship. The interns who are selected for the internship will have to arrange the accommodation on their own. This internship is neither employment nor an assurance of employment with the Ministry but the internship certificate issued by the Ministry will add more value to the candidate's career profile. The Ministry has its own code of conduct and termination policies for the interns. The candidates must strictly abide by the rules and regulations of the Ministry during the internship period.
