About CSIR-CMERI

The Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) was started in the year 1958 at Durgapur in West Bengal to develop the field of mechanical engineering. It is the only national-level research institute in India which is focusing on the research and development activities in mechanical engineering technology. CMERI works under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The ultimate goal of CSIR-CMERI is to implement innovative ideas and to create inventions in the mechanical field so as reducing the dependency of India on foreign countries for mechanical products or inventions. To perform research and development activities, the CMERI has good infrastructure and facilities. The institute not only conducts research activities but also offers an integrated M.Tech-Ph.D programme, full-time post-graduate diploma course and skill initiative training programme in mechanical engineering.



Internships at CSIR-CMERI

Every year, CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute conducts a summer internship programme during the summer vacation(May to July) for undergraduate engineering students. Also, the institute conducts summer internship (with a stipend) for a DST Sponsored project only if there are any vacancies in the projects going on in the institute. The application procedures for the regular summer internship and the internship for a DST Sponsored Project is different. This article deals with the application procedures for the summer internships of undergraduate engineering students. CSIR-CMERI offers the summer internship programme for B.E/B.Tech students to give real-time practical research experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering and allied areas by involving them into the research projects that are being conducted in the institute.

Duration of the internship

The duration of the summer internship programme offered by the CSIR-CMERI is 4 to 8 weeks. The internship will usually happen in the month of May to July.

Total intake

For the CSIR-CMERI summer internship programme, the total number of students who will be inducted as summer interns are not fixed. The intake of interns will vary every year depending on the requirements of different ongoing projects in the R&D department of the institute.

Eligibility criteria

Who can apply for the CSIR-CMERI summer internship programme? The interested candidates who satisfy the below mentioned educational qualifications can submit the application of CSIR-CMERI summer internships.

  1. Candidates should be studying their engineering degree at IITs, NITs or any other recognized Indian Universities and Engineering Colleges or Institutes in a stream related to the research area of CSIR-CMERI.

  2. Only candidates who have completed their 6th semester of their B.E/B.Tech course in the following disciplines is eligible to apply for the summer internship.

    Engineering Disciplines: Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Metallurgy & Materials Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communications Engineering, Electronics & Instrumentation, Environmental Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering/Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering.

  3. Candidates should have passed their class 10th and 12th board examination with a satisfactory marks, preferably 1st division/class.

  4. Candidates must have cleared the B.E/B.Tech course of study with CGPA at least 7.5 till the last semester exam they have appeared.

How to apply

Every year, the CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur will release the official notification for the summer internship programme of undergraduate engineering students on their official web portal. The interested and eligible candidates can visit the official website of CSIR-CMERI and download the internship application form.

Applicants must fill the downloaded application form for Summer Internship Programme at CSIR–CMERI, Durgapur and submit it by post to the below mentioned address along with the necessary documents on or before the last date mentioned in the official notification. The envelope containing the application form and documents should be superscribed as "Summer Internship Programme at CSIR–CMERI, Academic Year".

Enclosures: The following documents must be submitted along with the filled-in application form

  • Self-attested xerox copies of mark sheets/grade sheets and certificates of all exams passed (starting from board exam of class X)

  • Original copy of the recommendation letter from the Head of the Institution / HOD / Training and Placement Officer(TPO) mentioning their aspirations and the date & period of proposed Summer Internship at CSIR–CMERI.

  • Discipline(s) in which internship is sought( mention the engineering discipline(s) from the list mentioned under the eligible criteria section of this article)

Note: The institute will reject the application if a candidate submits his/her internship application without any recommendation letter from the HOD/TPO/Head of the institution.

Selection process

Once the internship applications are submitted, the CSIR-CMERI will process the applications and will select the interns based on the eligibility criteria and discipline in which internship is requested. The institute will never entertain phone call or email regarding the application and selection. The institute after processing all the application will publish a list of selected candidates for the summer internship on the official website. The final list may contain the names of the wait listed candidates if there are any. If any selected intern rejects their confirmation of participation in the internship programme, then the waitlisted candidates may get an opportunity to join the internship.

As per the decision of the competent authority of CSIR-CMERI, the selected candidates for the internship programme will have to pay a training fee of Rs.5,000(Non-refundable) within the time mentioned by the institute in its official notification on the selection of candidates by means of NEFT or other modes of Bank Transfer. The bank details for the payment of the training fee will be mentioned in the official notification of the institute. After the successful payment of fee, CSIR-CMERI will call the selected interns to join the internship programme on any specific date. The date and venue details and other necessary instructions regarding the internship programme will be informed to the candidates prior joining.

Stipend

For the summer internship programme of the undergraduate students, no financial assistance will be provided. CSIR-CMERI will give an internship certificate to all the interns on successful completion of the summer internship. Also, based on the presentation of work at the seminar organized by the institute, the top interns will also be presented with awards as a motivation gesture.



CSIR-CMERI will give stipend amount only to the Summer Internship for a DST Sponsored Project and not for the regular internship for B.E/B.Tech Students. If you wish to do an internship with a stipend, then you can also apply for the Indian Institute of Science(IISc), Bangalore Summer Internships.

Accommodation

For the outstation interns, CSIR-CMERI provides accommodation on payment basis. To get accommodation, candidates need to make a request to the institute in advance while submitting their internship application. The other students will have to plan the accommodation on their own. Since the institute has only limited rooms for stay, the decision of the concerned authority will be final regarding the accommodation.

Note: The Director, CSIR–CMERI reserves all right to accept or reject any application for Summer Internship in any specific discipline.
