This is the fourth article in the series of articles on branded engineering colleges of Anna University in Chennai. In this article, we will deal with the most important and salient features of two engineering colleges -- the Madras Institute of Engineering and the Sri Venkateshwara College of Engineering, in some detail.
Introduction
When a college gets established in the year 1949 by a Visionary industrialist in a Southern suburb that was then not so well developed, but grows from strength to strength to become a world-class college, and virtually an extension of the Anna University, the entire area gets developed. The college stands out for the highest quality of education and one hundred per cent placement. The college also has produced so many entrepreneurs in different fields and many of them dominate the IT space in particular. The college also stands out for excellence in terms of new courses.
The aforesaid description fits the prestigious Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet, Chennai. For those who may not know Chennai, Chromepet is today one of the best and highly developed suburbs of Chennai. It is connected by the EMU trains as well and the college is very near the station itself. It is also connected to every other part of the city through hundreds of buses. Its proximity to the fully developed and nerve centre called Tambaram has helped it grow exponentially. Students who study not only in MIT but also other nearby colleges are reportedly staying in residential flats nearby. This locality is also special for the various kinds of food facilities available and it includes the North Indian varieties as well.

As already mentioned above, the Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet, Chennai, (MIT)is virtually an extension of the Anna University in the southern suburb of Chromepet Chennai. This college attracts many students from all over India and abroad. It has produced some of the world's best technocrats and the Alumni record, published on the website has some details. It is an autonomous institution.
True to the spirit of innovation, MIT is one of the few institutions offering the BE course in Rubber and Plastics Technology. This unique course is reported to not only have one hundred per cent placement but is said to have produced very good research as well. There is always plenty of scope in this area and those who are interested may refer to Rubber and Plastic Technology.
MIT was also one of the pioneering colleges that introduced the B.E(Instrumentation) course at a time when the course was unheard of. Today, the B.E(Electronics and Instrumentation) course is such a famous course not only in MIT but also in many other colleges of Anna University, throughout the State of Tamil nadu. MIT also has part-time study facilities and Engineers who are posted in Chennai on IT jobs or those who get to work in the manufacturing industries of Chennai may use the part-time facilities to acquire, for example, the M.E degree in VLSI Design and Embedded Systems. Over the years, this course has emerged as the nerve centre for high quality research and applications in the electronics and IT fields and those who are interested in knowing about this course may refer to VLSI Design and Embedded Systems.
MIT also offers the MS degree through research on a part-time basis in mechanical engineering and the doctorate in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Those interviewed spoke of the very high -quality of Faculty Members, most of whom are those with three decades of academic and research experience. There can hardly be any doubt that the Madras Institute of Technology Chennai, very famously referred to as MIT is a world-class institute of engineering and is the first choice of all eligible candidates in the counselling process, alongside the famous SSN College of Engineering.

Though this college was established only in the year 1995 by the famous SPIC group of Chennai, it has quickly grown into an institution of repute, now competing with the best in business and finds a place among the top ten most preferred colleges of Chennai by eligible students who choose this college for their studies in various courses. It is an autonomous college of the Anna University, Chennai.
Housed at Sriperambadur, which is now an industrial hub the Chennai to Bangalore Highway, the college has quickly grown from strength to strength and does offer some unique courses, in addition to the traditional courses. For example, it offers B.Tech in Marine Engineering. In fact, over the past two decades, Marine Engineering has emerged a top-notch course in Chennai and has many takers. This could possibly be one of the very few institutions offering this course. Those who want to see the world and enjoy all the challenges of working in the sea happily study this course. The placement record for this course at this college is reportedly extremely good.
The M.Tech course in Mechatronics is another such course. Mechatronics is a combination of both Mechanical and Electronics specializations. This course is highly patronized by those who want to work on the shop floor in the manufacturing sector and the TVS group, in particular, has recruited a large number of Mechatronics graduates and post-graduates and the placement in this discipline at Sri Venkateshwara is also reported to be very good. Those who are interested in this course may refer to M.E. Mechatronics.
When an institution does very good research and gets patents for such research, the entire world will sit up and take notice. Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering is one such college. The patent details have been published on the institution's website. For example, in the year 2018, it had obtained a National patent for Edible and biodegradable packing film and in the year 2019, it had got a similar patent for Groundnut harvester for Indian farmers. There are other patents and those who want to collaborate with the research team may contact the college for further details. As can be easily seen, the research facilities are very good and the college seems to have a big unique selling proposition here. It is also reported that an extremely big contingent of graduates go abroad for further studies from this college and the educational ecosystem aids this process.
Hence, it does seem that through sheer hard work and dedication, the Sri Venkateshwara College of Engineering Chennai has emerged as a top branded college of the Anna University. It is bound to grow from strength to strength in the years ahead.
There is a common thread that connects both the colleges. Those interviewed believed that the Faculty Team is highly dedicated and disciplined in both colleges. While MIT is a much older institution and has a USP of unique courses, the Sri Venkateshwara College of Engineering has played the catch-up game very well. Secondly, both colleges have a big emphasis on research. Both colleges have a big brand name and in the case of the Sri Venkateshwara College of Engineering, its founders are from SPIC and this is a big plus in terms of its industry orientation and practical methods of teaching.
