Earth science or geosciences is a very broad field of science which includes the study of chemical and physical constituents of the earth and its atmosphere and also includes all-natural science fields related to the planet Earth. The main branches of Earth sciences are Geology, Astronomy, Meteorology, climatology, Oceanography, Environmental Science etc. In earth sciences, the study of earth's geologic, hydrologic and atmospheric conditions are done. In Geology, the study of the earth's surface and its surrounding has been done. It also includes the study of earth processes like volcanoes, earthquakes, and hurricanes etc. Meteorology includes the study of meteors, weather and storms. About NCESS

National Centre for Earth Science Studies is a recognised and well-establish R&D centre under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. The centre is located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Many universities are associated with the centre and students registered under doctoral programmes can carry out their research at NCESS. NCESS announce from time to time for registration of Students in PhD under science, Environmental and other interdisciplinary subjects. Under scientific exchange programs, various scientists from all over the world visit NCESS and share their experience and knowledge. Similarly, an Earth Science Forum is also there which provides a platform for information exchange on activities of ongoing research projects. Interns or students doing research on the campus can take part in these activities. NCESS also opens its laboratory for the student on the occasion of Earth Day celebration so they can visit and interact with other students and scientists.

NCESS offers internship/summer training/dissertation opportunities for school and college students for the partial fulfilment of their degree course or to enhance their knowledge on the subject or to provide research facilities for scholars in the field of earth sciences.

Details of Internship

The NCESS Centre offers Internship/Summer training/Dissertation programs to selected candidates who are pursuing a postgraduate university-level course as part of their curriculum. During internship or summer training, NCESS also offers scholarships to the students as per NCESS rules. For the postgraduate candidates of engineering and science subjects who wish to complete their dissertation at NCESS, Centre also offers laboratory services. Interested candidates can utilise the laboratory facilities for their dissertation work by paying a small fee. Besides, they have to identify a supervising guide for this purpose and seek the Director's permission.

Internship Duration

Internship duration must be a minimum of 8 weeks period continuously. And the candidate who has to join for less than 8 weeks will not be allowed at NCESS and their candidature will not be considered.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. The internship is open for Earth Sciences students only.
  2. To be eligible for the internship at NCESS, the applicants must fulfil any of the eligibility requirements as given below:
    a) The candidate must be in the 7th-9th Semester of the 5 years Integrated MSc./M.Sc Tech/M.Tech programme.
    Or
    b) He/she must be in the 3rd–5th Semester of the 3 years MSc./M.Sc Tech programme.
    Or
    c) He/she must be in the 2nd–3rd Semester of 2 years MSc./M.Sc Tech/ M.Tech course.

Hostel Facility: The candidates will have to make stay arrangement themselves. No Hostel facility will be provided by NCESS.

Stipend: There is no provision of stipend during the internship.

How to Apply

The candidates who wish to join an internship at NCESS must visit the official website of NCESS and check the eligibility first. Every year notification for internship/summer training is announced at the website of NCESS. PG students willing to join and satisfying eligibility criteria may apply for the internship during February and September every year. The candidates must send the filled-application in the prescribed format to the email ID: sree.anoop@ncess.gov.in. Important Note: The candidates, who were selected for training earlier but did not join, need not apply again.

Schedule of Application Submission

Applications are accepted twice a year, i.e. in February and in September. Applicants who wish to join an internship at NCESS may be sent their applications from 01 February to 28 February and from 01 September to 30 September of every year.

Selection and Short-listing of Students

To select the interns, all the applications are scrutinized and suitable applications are accepted. And out of these accepted applications, the suitable candidates will be shortlisted and the names of shortlisted candidates will be displayed on the website. Usually, the announcement of shortlisted candidates will be done in the first week of May and in the first week of December, respectively.

Joining at NCESS

At the time of joining of internship at ESSO-NCESS, the candidates, whose names are displayed on the website of NCESS, must bring a printout of their application forms. The application form must be duly signed by the Head of the Department (HOD) of the respective department with an official seal.
