This is the eighth article in the series of branded colleges of Anna University in Chennai. In this article, we will deal with the salient features of two Anna University affiliated colleges- the Tagore Engineering College and the Mohammed Sathak A.J. College of Engineering.
Introduction
What happens when an emerging college is situated right next to the prestigious SRM deemed University and is just around thirty minutes drive by car? What if the college is relatively not a big branded college, but still wants to stay relevant and offer a standard education that gradually gets noticed and also has a big emphasis on placement? And also makes continuous efforts to improve the faculty inputs?

In this eighth article on the series of branded colleges of Anna University in Chennai, we will discuss a) What is special about Tagore Engineering College and b) What is special about Mohammed Sathak A.J. College of Engineering.What is special about Tagore Engineering College
This college is situated at Vandalur, which is a well-developed suburb in the Southern part of Chennai metropolis. It also houses the famous zoo in Chennai. The area is well connected with hundreds of buses that ply to various parts of the city and Vandalur is virtually a part of Chennai now.
Tagore Engineering College is an emerging college. The description in the introduction aptly fits this college. Over the years, the college is trying its best to stay relevant and attract quality students. After the year 2005, since the supply of engineers was so high and the jobs in the manufacturing sector did not keep pace, there was a sudden slump in the demand for engineers. This trend has continued for several years now, all over India and, particularly in Tamil Nadu. The added tension among various Managements of engineering colleges is the increased competition from the high-quality Deemed Universities, all of which compete for the same students. Hence, to stay relevant and also attract a good number of students is itself a big task. Attracting the best faculty and motivating them to the best extent possible, in the given set of challenging circumstances, is another big task.
However, if the best students are at least assured of a fairly good job through the campus placement, in well-branded companies ( including the BPO/KPO organizations), the parents of the students are pleased with the results in this direction. This is exactly where the branded Tagore Engineering College fits in. Apart from the fact that such colleges cater to those who secure 80 to 85% marks in the core subjects ( it should be noted that only those who score 98.5 and up to 100 percent in the core subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics stand any chance of admission to the first top seven Engineering affiliated colleges of Anna University in Chennai, three in Coimbatore and so on). Please do note that for every one percentage point less, like 97.5, there will be at least two thousand students competing for the best-branded colleges. The other colleges that get students with marks upwards of 80 to 89 percent nurture them to the best extent possible, through a number of personality development programs. Today, this is an industry by itself and a whole lot of trainers are into this business. They offer a variety of solutions based on the budgets of the colleges.
Tagore Engineering College is one such college. The continuous attempts to improve the quality of industry preparedness among students have made this college to produce good results in terms of placement. It also has attempted to do different things.
Look at the research record of this college. A Senior Faculty Member of this college, from the Aeronautical Department, had received a patent for "Method and Device for controlling Sonic Underexpanded Jets". Similarly, two other Faculty members had obtained a patent for "Saw-toothed Leading Edge Delta Wings". Efforts to expand the scope of research is reportedly taken seriously by the college Management. The college is also reportedly engaged in community-oriented research that can lead to positive outcomes. For example, with a grant of Rs.3.86 Lakh rupees, the college has produced research on "Study of Environmental Status of Pulicat Lake and its impact on the local community" from the Common Grant Program, USA.
Apart from that, the placement cell claims to have provided jobs to 214 eligible students ( normally those with even one single arrears paper in any of the previous semesters are not allowed to sit for campus placement) have been placed and the details thereof have been published in the college website.
The MBA course is slowly acquiring a status of its own, in the midst of hectic competition. The Tagore Engineering college website also boasts of a large number of MoUs signed with a number of institutions for various purposes. The ongoing efforts at continuous improvement are possibly one of the reasons why the Tagore Engineering College Chennai has emerged as a branded college of the Anna University, Chennai.

Though this college was started to cater to the Muslim community, right from the start, it has catered to students of all religions. The biggest advantage of this college is the seriousness of the Management to make continuous improvements. It is in the same league as the Tagore Engineering College, and is an emerging college, among the branded colleges of Chennai.
The Mohammed Sathak A.J. College of Engineering offers the usual courses in the B.E stream. There is nothing innovative at all. However, perhaps to cater to the increased job opportunities in the Gulf countries, it offers the Civil Engineering Course and in the M.E stream, it offers the Structural Engineering course. It should be noted that this specialized course is concerned with the study of concrete structures and the Theory of Elasticity. It also covers the steel structure and the design of structures and the like. Those who are interested in pursuing a career in structural engineering may please refer to Structural Engineering.
This college has set up an innovation Council as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Human Resources Development. The website of this college lists a number of recruiters who visit the campus. Through industry references, a couple of opinions obtained did indicate that the college Management is making very serious efforts to develop the college in all directions. It has conducted a number of International Conferences and does encourage its Faculty Members to take up applied research projects. The industry sources also indicate that the placement record is good. There is ofcourse scope for improvement, according to the same sources.
A few parents who were contacted through references opined that the college has a strict discipline and since it is situated right in the IT corridor of Siruseri, which is home to a large number of IT companies, the internship programs conducted in various IT organizations, for a growing number of students, does lead to good off-campus placements. There is the toughest competition for the bright students in the neighborhood and this is one fact that is seriously engaging this Management too. Yet, when taken as an overall point of assessment, this emerging college is one college that has serious intentions of becoming a better branded college. It is for this reason that the Mohammed Sathak A.J. College of Engineering finds a place in this article and in the present series of articles of branded colleges of Anna University in Chennai.

As discussed in one aforesaid paragraph, the competition for the best students, based on the one hundred marks in the core subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, is the toughest ever competition in Tamil Nadu. There is no entrance examination as this was abolished several years ago. The competition to attract the best becomes very severe with a drop in just one percentage point. It is in this context that the two colleges discussed above, stand out. This series of articles will discuss only those colleges that are here to stay and develop year on year.
