Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB), Bengaluru, which is a State Government-established autonomous institute, has introduced an exciting new course, a Post Graduate Diploma Program in Big Data Biology. The course is financially supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and has been launched as a collaborative venture with the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-B), Bangalore. Admission to the course for students fulfilling the eligibility requirements will be through a National level entrance exam and then an interview at IBAB.

Need for Big Data Biology PG Diploma course

The subject of Biology has exploded out of our school text books to embrace a whole lot of diverse allied fields, including biopharma, bioinformatics, biomedical technology, etc. Combine this with computing and you come up with exciting contemporary advances in the fields of neuroscience and genomics, Life Sciences and Healthcare, medical imaging processes, etc. which incorporates Cloud Computing and Artificial Intelligence. All this practically begs for an innovative academic program that will provide comprehensive training to future professionals who can collate and analyze large stacks of data in health care and imaging. About IBAB Big Data Biology PG Diploma course

There are 25 seats for the one year course at IBAB, with seats reserved for SC, ST and Physically Challenged candidates as per the MHRD, Govt. of India norms. The selected candidates may be eligible for a monthly stipend of Rs. 10,000/- based on the eligibility norms of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Highly qualified faculty from IBAB and IIIT-B will be managing the course with additional expertise provided by eminent people from related industries, who will also provide mentoring and conduct teaching sessions as visiting faculty from time to time. Specialized facilities, research labs and sophisticated instruments are available for students of this course.

The curriculum of Big Data Biology PG Diploma course does not focus only on computing or only on life sciences, but meshes the two seamlessly to provide an in-depth study of how data sciences can be usefully beneficial for the field of Life Sciences and health care as well. Thus you will be learning aspects of varied topics, such as algorithms, statistical data, image processing, clinical data analysis, etc. Industry-relevant projects, research-oriented projects, assignments and workshops will support the main course work. The fees can be paid through NEFT or by cash or with a Demand Draft (DD) drawn in favour of 'Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology' payable at Bengaluru (details of NEFT can be obtained at the official website).



Eligibility requirements

Only Indian nationals can enroll for the Big Data Biology PG Diploma course. You should have a B.E. or a B.Tech. Degree or any equivalent Degree from a recognized institute/University in any of these disciplines-

  2. Biomedical Technology

  3. Bioinformatics

  4. Computer Science and Engineering

  5. Electronics and Communication Engineering

  6. Electrical and Electronics Engineering

  7. Information Technology

Also acceptable is an M.Sc. Degree in any of these disciplines-
  1. Biotechnology

  2. Bioinformatics

  3. Biochemistry

  4. Computer Science

  5. Information Technology

  6. Statistics

Academic scores: Students need to have scored a minimum of 60% in the qualifying Graduate/Postgraduate exam.

Entrance exam format

To get admission to the Big Data Biology PG Diploma course at IBAB, you have to appear for the online entrance exam that is held on a national level and shortlisted candidates based on the exam scores are then interviewed.

There are four sections in the entrance exam, namely, Statistics, Verbal and Analytical Aptitude, Programming and Computing Ability (to check logical abilities on algorithms, data structure, etc and not programming skills), and Life Sciences.



Important dates

For admission to the first batch at IBAB for the Big Data Biology PG Diploma course, the schedule is as follows-
The last date for submitting applications and making the payment is 10th November 2020, at midnight.

The online entrance exam is scheduled for 22nd November 2020 at 10 a.m., for which a e-Hall Ticket will be sent to your email ID about 10 days before the exam date.

You can appear for an online Mock Test between 14th and 20th November 2020.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed on 12th December 2020 and the academic classes will begin on 18th January 2021.

How to apply

Submit the online application for the Big Data Biology PG Diploma course at the official IBAB admission portal with a valid email ID and contact number. You also need to pay a non-refundable application fee of Rs. 1000/- at the end of the application process.

In the online application, you need to provide personal details, academic qualifications from Class 10 onwards, work experience and internships done if any, as well as any IT-related skills, such as certifications, software, programming languages, etc. Other general achievements can also be mentioned that will likely enhance your application and give you an edge over other candidates to bag one of the 25 seats.
