Introduction
The two colleges featured in this article, have a special background. One can call it a tale of two educationists who have made a big mark in the higher education scenario of Tamil Nadu. From very humble beginnings, these two educationists have built empires where everything is taught in higher education. While one has gone on to build one of the top five Deemed Universities in India, the other also has a deemed University that would easily figure among the top fifteen Deemed Universities.
The SRM Valliammai Engineering College is part of the famous SRM group. The SRM Deemed University now competes with many IITs to attract the best quality students. It is so famous not only in India but abroad as well. This Deemed University has many campuses and even runs a good Distance Education cell now. The standard of teaching at SRM is simply world-class. The second college that we will discuss is the Jeppiyaar Engineering College, that belongs to the famous Sathyabama Deemed University, headquartered at Chennai.

What is special about SRM Vallaiammai Engineering College
Since this college, the SRM Valliammai Engineering College, is part of the famous STM group, it has undoubtedly had a positive rub-off effect on the standards of education in this college. Parents who were interviewed were very confident of this factor -- that their wards would rub shoulders with the best of brains from across the country and even abroad -- and this will enable them to secure good placement. Indeed, the placement record of this college is reportedly more than 85% of eligible students, year on year. This is an autonomous college of Anna University.
This college offers all the conventional courses, but it also offers the ME course in structural engineering. Engineers with a civil engineering background will find good jobs in the growing real estate sector, particularly in the commercial space field, both within India and abroad. There is a big demand for this course and those who are interested may refer to M.E. Structural Engineering.
This college also has good research facilities and faculty members are encouraged to take on applied research projects. This college, which is a part of the famous Jeppiyaar group of institutions that also runs the Sathyabama University, is famous for its very strict discipline. The founder, the late Dr.Jeppiyaar, was a close aide of the legendary late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri. M.G. Ramachandran(MGR) who was a very famous actor who became a full- time politician.
History has recorded that fact that anyone entering MGR's house would not go back, without being fed. The kitchen would be open 24X7. The late Jeppiyaar has a culture -- food is free for all Faculty Members and non-teaching staff, to this day. Even casual visitors are encouraged to have lunch. Such is the hospitality that has been a special feature of this college and all institutions of this group.
This college also offers the usual courses. However, the college also offers the B.Tech course in Biotechnology and this course is reportedly in good demand. The M.E(Mechatronics) course is reportedly quite famous in this college and has a good placement record. This is one growing field of specialization, as it combines both mechanical engineering and electronics and electrical engineering. The most advanced research in the global auto sector is exactly in this field and this is perhaps one reason that thousands of students want to study this course. The website is silent about the recent placement records, but from reliable sources, it is learned that the big companies that visit the Sathabama Deemed University, also visit this campus. Hence, it does seem that the likes of MRF, Capgemini, and Hitachi, among others, who have recruited students from this college, have found the products employable.
The college is also reportedly one that gives some importance to research. However, the core competence seems to be the continuous efforts to place students and the training details mentioned in the website seem to be promising. For example, it has been reported that the students compulsorily undergo 35 hours of training on aptitude, soft skills and the like. It is for this reason that the Jeppiyaar Engineering College is a good standard branded college of Anna University, Chennai.
