IntroductionThe rapid growth of engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, over the past 35 years, was (and still is) a big reason for the rapid economic development of Tamil Nadu. However, the rat race to stay relevant and at least to get a fairly good number of students to study in their colleges has become a nightmarish experience for many colleges, particularly those situated in the rural areas i.e nearly thirty-odd kilometers away from the cities. Many have closed down their colleges, and at least one hundred would simply wind up when they complete the process of educating the present batches of students in the third and fourth year of engineering in their colleges. There has also been a rapid decline in the number of students wanting to study engineering after lucrative new courses have opened up and thousands of students switched over to the commerce stream, where it is possible to pursue courses like the ICWA after the plus two itself, and the student can also just acquire a B.Com degree through the distance education facilities. Tamil Nadu tops with high-quality courses on an extremely big variety of subjects. For example, Annamalai University, Chidambaram has courses that directly compete with IGNOU, and there are also distance education study centers in many big cities.
For the colleges in Chennai, due to the presence of so many diversified ranges of industries, the colleges have some intrinsic advantages. There are always students who migrate from the surrounding districts and even places like Tiruchirapalli, to study in the Chennai city colleges, as the students and parents do not want to miss out on the exposure that students get in a metro environment. The students from other cities get to rub shoulders with brains from the best possible city schools, and even students who get anywhere between 75% to 86% prefer to study only in the city colleges. This is one reason why branded colleges have managed to survive. Yes, there is a long way to go, but they are still alive and hope to ride the wave when students come back to taking engineering as a preferred option for a career.
This year 2020, has seen this surge in demand, for engineering, once again. It is in this context, that the two colleges discussed in this article, the Thangavelu Engineering College and the Arignar Anna Institute of Science and Technology, fit the bill. In the previous article in this series, Leading Branded Colleges of Anna University in Chennai -15 we have discussed the salient features of two colleges, namely, the Prathyusha Engineering College and the Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology.
In this article, we will discuss a) What is special about the Thangavelu Institute of Technology and b) What is special about the Arignar Anna Institute of Technology,.
What is special about the Thangavelu Institute of TechnologyThis college has emerged as a fairly good college of some repute in the OMR area of Chennai. Since there are too many colleges in the same area, it has to contend with stiff competition. It has managed to stay on and build some competencies. As already mentioned in the introduction, anyone who scores above 75% tends to obtain admission to colleges like Thangavelu College. Here, exposure to developments in a metro ecosystem, with a huge industrial base, is the main advantage.
The college offers all the regular courses. Parents of the students who are studying in this college have mentioned that the B.E. (Artificial Intelligence and Data Science) is quite good. The college also offers a highly job-oriented M.E. Communication Systems course. There is a good scope for such courses because in the growing global electronics industry all the applications are related to increased automation. Similarly, the college also offers the related, but even more specialized M.E. Power Electronics & Drives course.
The college also offers MBA and MCA courses. However, there is a big scope for improvement in each of the courses. References from the industry indicate that the college is making some sincere attempts to increase the quality of its offerings in the past few years. The placement record is okay. It is for these reasons that the Thangavelu Engineering College has managed to build a fairly good reputation among the branded colleges of the OMR area.

However, the college does not offer a single new and contemporary course but has stuck to the traditional courses. The college reportedly gives some importance to industry-institute collaboration and applied research. It is also reported that placement opportunities have increased in the past few years.
Parents who were contacted mentioned that the B.E. (Electronics & Communication Engineering) is good in terms of quality and is updated to meet the needs of the industry. The college also has a good corporate social responsibility that has created a good impact in the Sriperumbudur area.
