IIRS & ISRO online courses on basics of Remote Sensing, GIS and GNSS

Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) & Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are going to conduct Outreach programme on Basics of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System and Global Navigation Satellite System from November 02-20- 2020. About the Institute

Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, is a leading institute which provides education and training to the working professionals and students in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System, etc. The institute was founded in 1966 in the name of Photo-interpretation Institute (IPI) under the aegis of Survey of India (SOI) in collaboration of the Government of The Netherlands. Later the IIRS became a separate entity of ISRO since April 2011 and got affiliation to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Department of Space, Govt. of India and has the main aim of the capacity building of the students and professionals in Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics and GNSS Technology for Natural Resources, Environmental and Disaster Management. IIRS also offers various course material and educational programmes to fulfil the needs of the students at undergraduates, graduates, and postgraduate level. IIRS also conducts an e-learning programme on Remote Sensing and Geo-information from time to time. Now, an online course on Basics of Remote Sensing, Geographical Information System and Global Navigation Satellite System is being organised by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing Applications (IIRS) from November 02 to 20, 2020. The outreach programme will be sponsored by Indian Space Research Organization, Department of Space, Government of India.

About the Course

The course will cover the basics of remote sensing, Geographical Information System, Global Navigation Satellite System. Participants will learn about the basic principles of remote sensing, thermal & microwave remote sensing. earth observation sensors and platforms, image interpretation, the spectral signature of different land cover features, knowledge of digital image processing including basic concepts of rectification and registration, enhancement, classification and accuracy assessment techniques will also be provided in details. Besides, they will also get information on the open-source software and their handling.

Course Schedule

There will be a total of 13 lectures covering different topics to be delivered by eminent experts/speakers. All the course materials like lecture slides, recorded video lectures, open-source software & handouts of demonstrations, etc. will be provided during e-class.

  • Topic 11. Geospatial Technology for climate change studies

November 2, 2020 to November 20, 2020.

Course Fee

The course is sponsored by ISRO and there is no course fee for attending this course.

Who can join the course?

The course is useful for students and professionals. Any undergraduate and post-graduate can join the course. Central or State Government Technical or Scientific staff, faculty members and researchers of university, institute or colleges can apply for the course.

Registration Process

The number of seats to the course is limited, hence the registration will be done on a first-come-first-serve basis. To register for the course, the candidates must visit the official website of IIRS (https://www.iirs.gov.in/EDUSAT-News) and read the instructions carefully. It is mandatory that the organization or university or institute, interested to participate, must be registered as co-ordinator in this programme at IIRS website.

First, the coordinators must register their organization/university/ institute as a nodal centre in IIRS website (Website: https://elearning.iirs.gov.in/edusatregistration/coordinator).

Thereafter, all the interested participants will have to register themselves through the online registration page by selecting his/her organization as a nodal centre (Website: https://elearning.iirs.gov.in/edusatregistration/student). After registration, the institute coordinator will have to approve the candidate's registration from his/her institute. In case of any help regarding registration, the candidate may contact: websupport@iirs.gov.in or call at 0135-2524120.

Requirements to Attend the Programme

The programme can be attended through online mode or the E-CLASS platform of IIRS-ISRO. However, participating organisations will have to pay for the establishment of the classroom facility. For this, the candidate must have the following:
  • Good internet connectivity.
  • Desktop computer/laptop with a web camera, microphone and output speaker.
  • Large display screen/projector/TV.
  • A view software platform developed by Amrita e-learning Lab

Note: There is no requirement of specific hardware/software.

Award of Certificate

At the end of the online course, all the students and working professionals will be provided with the course completion certificate. The criteria for issuing certificate will be:
  1. 70% attendance
  2. 40% marks in online examination


Feedback

At the end of the course, each participant will have to submit his/her feedback online through the IIRS e-Learning portal. Feedbacks received from the participants will be analyzed critically and implemented in upcoming courses of IIRS. Some participating organizations and participants will be invited at IIRS Dehradun to attend the annual IIRS Academia Meet (IAM).
