Coding is a skill action in the computer software world and it is good to expose the students to it at an early stage so that they can learn it to meet their future aspirations. This article details the initiative of Hindustan Times group in arranging a unique Codeathon contest for the students of class VI to IX.

Introduction

Hindustan Times has announced a unique initiative for the students of class VI to IX to learn and create codes and earn points in the process and participate in the Codeathon where there are attractive prizes like Laptops and smartwatches for the winners. Coding is the main activity in the computer software area and learning coding at an early age is going to help the students in their future academic and career- related activities. Coding uses a computer language to make a functioning application or website or game or any such utility thing. Coding is the ultimate skill set a student would like to learn and love to practice. This initiative of organising a Codeathon is going to give a good opportunity to the school students of class VI to IX to learn the coding in a fun-filled way.

How to register

The interested students can go to the Hindustan Times Codeathon site and register there and pay the participation fee of Rs 499 only. The parents can help the students in the signing up process and selecting a unique user ID.

During the registration process, the student has to enter all the personal details like name, email id, phone number, school details, and upload a photo. Another important thing is to upload a copy of the school ID card as proof of identity and this is a mandatory condition for participating in this Competition. There could be some students who have not got the ID card for the current academic year and they can upload the last year's ID also. After registering the details in the site the student will be taken to the payment gateway for payment of fees. Payment can be made using debit/credit card, net banking, UPI, digital wallets etc.

If the parent wishes to register their two children for this competition then they can use same email ID and Phone number for both the students but for each of the student, a separate registration is to be done using a separate user name and separate password.

Right from the registration process, at every step, some points will start accumulating in the student's account. Based on the class of the students the courses will be assigned to them automatically and then they have to follow the sequence and start learning.

The students of class VIII and IX will be learning Game Development Course using Python3 and PyGame Library. The students will be able to make basic games after the course.

There is a practice button in the student's dashboard which takes the student to an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) where they can practice coding while they are learning.

Assessment Process

The student has to attend to all the videos and all the quizzes and it is a mandatory condition. Points will be awarded after completion of each activity and as per performance in it. The students will be ranked based on the scores attained. The participant has to get at least a 80% score in the chapter quizzes. For this, he will be getting two chances and if he does not succeed then he will be simply promoted to the next level with the score obtained in second chance. The student has to get at least a 60% score in the course quiz where he will get three chances to complete it. If a student does not complete even in three chances then he does not qualify for the qualifier for going ahead for the Codethon and simply gets a certification of participation. There is a provision of two mock tests also to help the students to prepare for getting good scores in the above- mentioned activities and the student can take them beforehand for getting exposure to the level of the tests.
