IIIT Guwahati Admissions to part-time and full-time Ph.D. programs 2021


The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati has released the notification inviting applications for the Ph.D. programs of the institute. This article talks about the disciplines in which the Ph.D. programs are offered, the eligibility criteria, and the application process. Read on to know more about this.

Introduction

Set up in 2013, the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati is an Institute of National Importance as declared by the Government of India. The IIITG has released the notification for admission to the Ph.D. program of the Institute for the year 2021. The Ph.D. programs will be offered in the following disciplines: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), and Mathematics. For the specific areas of research under each discipline as well as the number of seats available for each area of research, please refer to the official notification (the link for that is given at the end of this article).

Eligibility

  • CSE and ECE: In this case, the candidate must have a Masters Degree in Engineering or Technology in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks OR a four-year Bachelors degree program in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in the relevant field with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks.
  • Mathematics: The candidate needs to have a MA/MSc/M.Tech in Mathematics with 60% marks or a CPI of at least 6.5.
  • Humanities and Social Sciences: For this, the candidate needs to have a Masters degree in English or Comparative Literature with a percentage of at least 60% or a CPI of 6.0. In this case, candidates with an MPhil or those who have cleared JRF will be given preference.


It must be noted that in the case of those candidates who have a B.Tech/MA/MSc, students who have cleared NET/GATE/JRF will be given preference. In the case of candidates from the ST/SC/PwD categories, there will be a relaxation of 0.5 CPI or 5% in the minimum mark required. Also please note that merely clearing the minimum criteria does not guarantee admission as the selection will be based on academic performance and the number of seats available.

Application process

The interested students have to apply online for the program. To apply online, the following steps have to be followed:
  • The first step is to download and fill up the application form. The application form is available as a word document file and can be downloaded from the following URL: http://iiitg.ac.in/files/PhD_application_form_December_2020.doc.
  • Then after the application form has been filled up with all the correct details, the candidate will need to upload the same through a Google form. The URL for the Google forms for the different disciplines are given in the official notification.
  • The student will first need to fill up the Google form with the appropriate details. Then the next step is to upload the filled up application form.
  • Along with the application form, the student will also have to upload the self-attested copies of the relevant mark sheets in the Google form. GATE/NET/JRF scorecards (if any) will also have to be uploaded in the same attachment.
  • After all the necessary documents have been uploaded, the student can submit the Google form.


Categories of students

Regular students: In this case, the student is expected to be engaged full-time in the Ph.D. coursework. He/she may get a scholarship or assistance, or the student's study may be self-financed.

Sponsored (full-time): In this case, the student is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, etc. The student must have a professional experience of at least one year in the relevant field and should be able to produce documents to that effect. Sponsored students will not be eligible for assistance/fellowship.

Part-time: In this case, the student is a professionally employed person who pursues the Ph.D. while being employed. Again a professional experience of one year is needed. A No Objection Certificate is also necessary.

Fee structure

The tuition fee per semester is Rs 5,000. The Institute caution fee (which is a one-time payment) is Rs 5,000 as well. Please note that if the student joins the hostel, then the hostel fee of Rs 12,500 has to be paid for each semester based on when the student joins the hostel.

  • Last date of online form submission – 20 December 2020
  • Date of selection of eligible students – 9 January 2021
