How to apply online for SERB JEST 2021 for admissions to Ph.D., Integrated Ph.D. Programs


Want to register online applications for the Joint Entrance Screening Test 2021 conducted by the Science & Engineering Research Board & Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai? SERB has released the exam dates of JEST 2021. This article provides information on eligibility, application procedures, fee etc. in addition to the list of Institutions which follow the JEST score for admission to PhD. and Integrated PhD courses in Physics, Theoretical Computer Science, Neuroscience and Computational Biology.

The Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB) is a statutory body which was established through an Act of Parliament. It conducts a national level eligibility test named Joint Entrance Screening Test, JEST-2021 for the admission to Ph.D. / Integrated Ph.D. in Physics or Theoretical Computer Science or Neuroscience or Computational Biology in any of the following institutes:






Eligibility criteria

Generally, a B.Sc degree in Physics or Mathematics / BE / B.Tech is considered for the Integrated M.Sc. / M.Tech - Ph.D Programme (Physics) and an M.Sc. (Physics/ Mathematics) degree is needed for Ph.D courses. Applicants who will complete the final year of the qualifying exam by August of each year, may appear to the JEST exam in that year. Each participating institute has its own eligibility criteria as such applicants should check the website of individual participating institutes to know the requirement as set by them.



Exam centers

JEST will be held in 37 cities which are Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mangalore, Vishakhapatnam, Goa, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jaipur, Aligarh, Bardhaman, Kharagpur, Siliguri, Allahabad, Kanpur, Nainital, Bhubaneswar, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Raipur, Bhopal, Indore, Kozhikode, Kochi, Madurai, Trivandrum, Roorkee, Nagpur, Pune, Sambalpur, Guwahati, Silchar, Patna and Srinagar.

Application fee

Eligible candidates interested to register applications for the JEST-2021 should pay an application fee of Rs. 400/-. The application fee will be Rs. 200/- for all the candidates belong to SC/ST category. Female candidates from other than SC/ST category should pay Rs. 200/- as an application fee which will be waived off for any female applicant of SC/ST category. The application fee must be paid through online mode only using the debit/credit card or net-banking.

How to apply

Candidates have to register their applications online only. For the online registration of the application, candidates must have a valid e-mail id which will be used for further communications. Follow the below steps to register your applications:
  1. Go to https://www.jest.org.in/
  2. Click on "Create new Account". The link will be available once the registration portal is active between below said dates.
  3. Once registered yourself, a mail will be received at your registered e-mail id
  4. Reset your password using the instructions given in said mail
  5. Go to above homepage and log-in
  6. Fill up the form carefully and click on "Submit Application"
  7. Upload passport sized photograph and your scanned signature both in JPEG format with less than 100 kb each
  8. Pay the application fee online through SBI Epay
  9. Once all those processes are completed, an e-mail containing Unique Submission Number and filled in data will be received at your registered e-mail. This mail will be required for further correspondence
  10. Admit card will be available at above webpage within due date which will be announced by the JEST authority later. Download it and bring a photocopy of the same along with your photo identity for the entry to the examination hall




Important dates

  • The online portal for the registration of application of JEST 2021 will be opened on 11th January 2021, Monday
  • The online portal for the submission of application and application fee will remain active till 14th February 2021
  • Jest-2021 will be held on 11th April 2021
