Ph.D. Programs at IIM Ahmedabad
Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, a premier management institute, often rated as the top business school in India, is inviting applications from eligible candidates for admission to its Ph.D. programs. The aspirants are expected to have a strong academic background and a deep interest in taking up original research work. On completion of the Ph.D., the students can aspire for a career in research or academics.
IIM Ahmedabad provides the best of facilities to its Ph.D. students. There are fellowship grants that cover most of the academic expenses of the students, including, accommodation. There are excellent computing and library facilities. A number of scholarly journals are published by its faculty and various research-related activities are actively pursued.
The program duration is of 5 years, which includes two years of course work and a final dissertation at the end of the course. After the two years of coursework, the students have to appear for an Area Comprehensive Examination that tests their skill in the respective area of their specialization. After graduating from this course, the students are placed at top organizations in the world in domains such as research, teaching and consulting. The basic eligibility criteria required for admission to the Ph.D. program is as follows:
It is to be noted that the master's or the bachelor's degree should be from a recognized university or educational institution. For the professional qualifications, they should be from institutions approved by the AICTE.
Those in the final year of their master's or bachelor's degree too may apply. Selection of such candidates will be on a provisional basis on the condition that they submit a certificate from their Principal/Registrar/Director/HOD of the college or university they were studying at stating that they have appeared for all the examinations required for obtaining the masters or the bachelor's degree. Such a certificate has to be submitted latest by May 31, 2021. Till the time they submit their mark sheet and the degree certification, their admission will remain provisional. The degree certificate and final mark sheets are in any case to be produced before December 31, 2021. Candidates who have been provisionally selected on the basis of the bachelor degree qualification will have to fulfill the 6.5 CGPA condition as well, failing which, their candidature will be canceled.
Selection Process
Admission to the Ph.D. programs will be through appearance in a Common Admission Test (CAT). NRI and foreign students can appear for the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT), in lieu of the CAT.
In lieu of the CAT, depending upon the area of their specializations, candidates can appear for different standard tests as specified by IIM Ahmedabad. These standard tests are enumerated below as per their areas of specialization.
For admission to the 2021 Ph.D. program, CAT scores of 2018, 2019 and 2020 will be valid.
The validity of the scores of the standard tests in lieu of CAT will be valid for two years from the date of the test being administered. The date of the deadline of submission of the application form should fall within this validity period of two years.
Shortlisting of the candidates for the various Ph.D. programs will be done based on the scores of the candidates in CAT or any standard test in lieu of CAT. Their academic background and work experience, if any, will also be taken into consideration. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to attend an interview that is scheduled to be held during March-April 2021. Depending upon the COVID situation and the health advisories issued at that time, the interview may be held face-to-face or even online.Grant of Fellowship Amount
Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad covers the entire academic expenses of the Ph.D. students by granting them a slab wise fellowship amount. First and second-year students are categorized under Slab A and will receive a monthly subsistence allowance of Rs 32,800. After completing the comprehensive examination, the students are upgraded to Slab B and receive a monthly amount of Rs 35,400. On submitting the approved thesis proposal, students reach Slab C and get a grant of Rs 39,300 per month.
The above monthly subsistence allowance covers expenses such as tuition fee, computer charges, library fee, medical insurance, placement fee and alumni fees.
Apart from the monthly allowance, the students are also provided with a yearly contingency grant of Rs 25,000 to cover expenses on books, research, photocopying, etc. This grant is for 5 years only. Students are also entitled to avail a maximum amount of Rs 1,75,000 for attending international conferences, workshops, summer schools, etc. during the entire tenure of their Ph.D. Details about this entitlement can be obtained from the Ph.D. program brochure available at the website of IIMA.
Students are also provided with full-time residential accommodation in dormitories during the entire period of their stay. A few numbers of houses are available for married students inside the campus.How to apply
To apply for the Ph.D. program, the candidates will have to visit the official website of IIM Ahmedabad and apply online. For details regarding the application process and the information to be filled in the online application form, candidates can make reference to the program brochure that is available online. Candidates can apply for a maximum of two areas of specialization as per their educational background and qualification.
