Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram has released the notification for admissions to PhD programs commencing from January 2021. Sponsored candidates who are scientists and engineers of the Department of Space (DOS)/ Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) can also apply. Note that there is no self-financing category in the application process.About IIST
A Deemed to be University recognized by UGC, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) is an autonomous body under the aegis of the Department of Space, Govt. of India. It has acquired a formidable global reputation in UG, PG, Doctoral, and Post-Doctoral programs centered on space sciences and technology and allied fields. Initially established at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, it now has its own independent campus at Valiamala, located not too far from Thiruvananthapuram. It also has an extended campus in Ponmudi hills. A unique feature of IIST is to welcome scientists and engineers of DOS / ISRO who are keen on pursuing a space-related program at its campus. There are seven Departments altogether - Aerospace Engineering, Avionics, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences, Humanities, Mathematics and Physics.

If you are pursuing a part-time PhD, the fees for the first semester or the residency period will be the same as for a full-time student, which is Rs 12,150/- per semester. For the remaining period, the fees will be Rs.3500/- (Tuition fees of Rs.1,500/- + Establishment Charges of Rs.2000/-) per semester.Eligibility requirements
You must be an Indian citizen to be eligible to apply for IIST PhD programs and below 35 years of age, as of 29th December 2020 (the age criteria may be relaxed as per Govt. norms). Admission to part-time PhD programs is open to Scientists/Engineers and Faculty Members working in any of the Centres/Units of ISRO/DoS, including employees of IIST.
The academic qualifications' eligibility and other skill requirements, if applicable, as per the Department under which you will pursue the PhD program and the research areas, are as follows-Department of Aerospace Engineering
Research area: Aerodynamics, Gas Dynamics, Aeroacoustics, Flow Instability.
Eligibility: You should have an M.E. or M.Tech. or M.S. in the fields of any of these – Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical, Applied Mechanics, Chemical or any other specialization that is related to fluid and thermal or an equivalent field.Department of Avionics
Research area: Reinforcement Learning and Control.
Eligibility: You should have an M.E. or M.Tech. or M.S. or equivalent in the fields of any of these – Electronics, Electronics and Communication, Electrical, Electrical and Electronics, Communication, Communication Networks, Telecommunication, Signal Processing, Machine learning, Computer Science, Control Systems, System-Science, Data-analytics or an equivalent field.
Skills: It is also desirable to have good programming skills in C/C++/Python/Matlab and/or good mathematical and analytical skills and/or prior research/industry experience.
Research area: Power Electronics and Drives.
Eligibility: You should have an M.E. or M.Tech. or M.Sc. (Engg.) or equivalent in any of these - Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Power Electronics and Drives, Industrial Electronics, Power Systems or an equivalent field.Department of Earth and Space Sciences
Research area: Atmospheric Science.
Eligibility: You should have an M.Sc./M.Tech. (Meteorology) or M.Sc./M.Tech. (Atmospheric Science) or M.Sc./M.Tech. (Oceanography) or M.Sc. (Physics) or M.Tech. (Earth System Science) or any equivalent subject.
Research area: Multi-source Remote Sensing Data for Species Discrimination.

Eligibility: You should have a B.E./B.Tech. in Avionics or Electronics and Communication or Aerospace Engineering or Computer Science & Engineering and also an M.E./M.Tech./M.S. in any of these - Control Systems, Computer Science and Engineering, and related areas. Eligibility: You should have an M.Sc. or BS-MS in Chemistry or equivalent.
Research area: Chemical Screening Platform Using Drosophila for Drug Discovery.

Research area: Experimental Condensed Matter Physics.
Eligibility: You should have an M.Sc. in Physics, BS-MS in Physics or B.Tech. in Engineering Physics with M.Sc./M.Tech. in related areas of condensed matter/Solid State Physics.
Research area: Atomic and Molecular Physics, Molecular Physics of Interplanetary Ionosphere.
Eligibility: You should have an M.Sc. in Physics or M.Sc. in Electronics or Int. M.Sc. in Physics or BS-MS in Physics or BS-MS in Applied Physics; or a B. Tech. Engineering Physics and Master's Degree in Solid State Physics or Optical Engineering.
Note: Candidates applying for the above will be selected based on an interview only and those holding an external Fellowship can also apply for research areas listed in the earlier section, on condition that they fulfill the requisite eligibility requirements. However, part-time Ph.D. scholars are ineligible for any Research Fellowship in addition to their applicable emoluments as ISRO/DoS employees. You must submit your application in online mode only at the IIST PhD admissions official website. After registration, an application fee has to be paid online.
Application fee: Rs.700/- per Department for General/EWS/OBC candidates and Rs.350/- per Department for SC/ST/PD and Women applicants. You are permitted to apply for more than one research area within the same Department with no additional application fee, but if you wish to apply to multiple departments, then you will have to pay the appropriate total application fee for all.
If you are already employed in Government/Semi-Government/PSUs/Autonomous Bodies, then you must produce a NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the current employer at the time of the interview. Such candidates, namely, those applying through DoS/ISRO Units/Centres may submit the filled-in online application form through the proper channel, to be sent to the Deputy Registrar(Academics), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Valiamala PO, Thiruvananthapuram- 695 547 along with the self-attested copies of certificates/testimonials.Important dates
Online registration for admission to IIST's PhD programs is from 9th December 2020 to 29th December 2020, up to 11.59 p.m. In the case of sponsored candidates (externally-funded), the closing date is 6th January 2021, up to 11.50 p.m.
The list of candidates shortlisted for the online entrance test will be displayed on the official website on 6th January 2021, at 5 p.m.
The online screening test is scheduled for 10th January 2021 and the result will be declared on 13th January 2021, 5 p.m. onward.
Successful candidates then have to attend an interview scheduled over two days, on 18th and 19th January 2021. Candidates who are selected for the PhD programs will begin academic classes from 25th January 2021. Contact information
