How to apply online for SJMSOM-IIT Bombay MBA program 2021-23 admissions

That's right - there are eight IITs in India that accept students for their MBA programs on the basis of CAT scores of the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The IIMs, though, have no role in the selection process or the conduct of the MBA programs at the IITs.

In this article, we will discuss the MBA program at the Shailesh J Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM), IIT-Bombay.

About SJMSOM IIT-Bombay

For over two decades, the Shailesh J Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM), an integral institute of IIT-B, has been offering Masters and PhD programs in the field of management. Its reputation has grown to make it one of the top B-Schools in India for its outstanding programs that support innovation and entrepreneurship. The institute offers scholarships and provides facilities to avail of education loans from SBI and Canara Bank.

Its computing facilities are some of the best of the best, incorporating industry-standard application software, including IBM SPSS AMOS, Minitab, Prowess, STATA, etc. Interactions with doyens of the industry under the 'Diksha' sessions enable students to get the perspectives and experiences of established business leaders. Then there is the annual management festival 'Avenues' with a blend of competitive events, discussions, and lectures.



About SJMSOM Master of MBA program

There are a total of 152 seats for the 2021-23 batch (including EWS). However, there are no seats reserved for sponsored candidates. You can check out the IIT-Madras MBA program which accepts applications from sponsored candidates, including from Defence personnel.

The freshly restructured program is of two years' duration, split into eight terms with 156 credits total for the entire program. During the first four terms of the first year, you will be studying all the disciplines of management through a range of over 20 courses. There will be project work and case studies, interesting simulation games, etc. At the end of the first term, you will work on a summer project for a duration of 8 to 10 weeks (generally in the month of September) which is basically working on actual live projects within an organization. This organization may not necessarily be a banking or finance institution but could be an FMCG, IT or media conglomerate, too. Organizations that have offered summer internships to SJMSOM students in the past include Wipro, Nestle, RBL Bank, Times Group, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, etc.

Know the significant features and types of IIT internship programs

Post the summer project, you start the next four terms, during which you will taking up core courses as well as preparing to pursue the management discipline of your choice through electives in any or all disciplines. You also have the option of working on a one-month winter project at the end of the first two terms.

The SJMSOM MBA curriculum covers the general subjects of Finance, Accounting, Operations and Marketing, HR, etc as well as those related to Technology Policy, R&D Management,, etc.

Eligibility requirements

The following are acceptable academic qualifications to be eligible to seek admission to the MBA program at SJMSOM -

For domestic candidates

UG and PG Degree: You must have a Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree (or an equivalent qualification recognized by the HRD Ministry, Govt. of India) with minimum 60% marks or a minimum CPI of 6.5 out of 10 from a recognized university or from one that is declared to be deemed as a University as per UGC norms. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the requirement is a minimum of 55% in the qualifying degree exam or a minimum CPI of 6 out of 10. The Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification should be obtained through a minimum of four years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or its acceptable equivalent.

For those qualifying this year: You are eligible to apply if you are appearing for the final year of the degree, or have completed the degree requirements and are awaiting results. In both these scenarios, you should have scored an aggregate of 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) or equivalent till the latest exam that has been completed and whose scores are available.

For those with a Professional Qualification: CA/ICWA, with a first-class Bachelor's degree in any discipline with min. 60% marks in aggregate, including all years/semesters (55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) or a minimum CPI of 6.5 out of 10 (6 for SC/ST/PwD candidates).

CAT score requirement: You must have a valid score of the Common Admission Test (CAT)-2020 that was conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

For International candidates

You can seek admission to SJMSOM's MBA program as an international student if you are holding a foreign passport or have an Indian passport but are studying or working abroad continuously for more than or equal to two years (as on 30th September 2020). If you are holding a foreign passport but you do not have an Indian passport, then you should have cleared TOEFL or IELTS. The eligibility criteria are the same as mentioned above for domestic candidates (other than CAT score).

Note: There is no minimum GMAT score requirement for NRI/Foreign nationals. Everyone with a valid GMAT score is welcome to apply.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted online at the Shailesh J Mehta School of Management admissions portal with, first, an initial registration with a valid email ID and password. On registration, you will receive an activation link which you can click on after 12 hours and fill in the required details. Note that all details of the mandatory fields should be filled in at one sitting, as it will expire after 50 minutes. However, you can use the 'Save and Continue Later' button if you wish to enter details/correct details at a later stage. Once the 'Submit' button is used, though, you will be unable to make any corrections (the link to a sample application format is provided at the end of this article).

Upload the required documents, including valid CAT 2020 registration number and percentiles. The list of documents are-
  1. You photograph (jpg/jpeg/png format, not more than 40KB )
  2. Your Signature (jpg/jpeg/png, not more than 10KB )
  3. The Last/Previous semester/Degree Certificate (PDF format only, not over 500KB)
  4. CAT Score Card (PDF format only, not over 500KB)
  5. Caste certificate if applying in the reserved category (PDF format only, not over 500KB)
  6. EWS certificate if applying in the EWS status (PDF format only, not over 500KB)
  7. Physically disability certificate if applying in the PwD category (PDF format only, not over 500KB)

Once the online application is submitted, the application fee has to be paid online as well through SBI online banking, Canara Net banking, Credit cards or Debit cards. The application fee is Rs.1600/- for General/NC-OBC applicants and Rs. 800/- for SC/ST/PwD applicants.

Finally, you can take a printout of the completed application form after the final submission and payment of the application fee. The printout should have your Registration ID and, right at the end, the details of the online payment transaction. You will need to bring this printout, along with original and self-attested copies of (i) Certificates of School board examinations; (ii) University degree(s); (iii) Work experience and internship; (iv) Achievements in extra-curricular activities, if any; and any other relevant documents if shortlisted and called for the Writing Ability Test (WAT)/Personal Interview (PI).

International candidates are requested to communicate with the institute (emails provided below) to know about the application submission procedure as the official website did not have the application form for the 2021-23 academic session. NRI candidates have to attend a PI (via a telephonic interview or Skype if not in Mumbai) and are not required to appear for the WAT.



Important dates

Online applications begin: 6th January 2021.
Last date to submit the online application: 31st January 2021.
Shortlisting of candidates and slot selection: 14th February 2021 (tentative date)
Personal interview for domestic candidates: between 2nd to 7th March 2021 (tentative dates).
Announcement of the final list of selected candidates: 1st May 2021.
