Highlights of Teach for India Fellowship Program

Brief work profile

During the two-year Fellowship Program, you will be teaching school students of low-income groups of Class 1 to Class 10. This is a full-time program covering a six-day weekly schedule as per the school hours and you must take it up with total dedication and commitment. The subjects to be taught are the core ones of English, Maths, Social Studies and Science. You will not be teaching a regional language. The medium of instruction will be English and the schools are located in the cities of Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, and Hyderabad.

Training and support

Prior to actually starting the teaching lessons in a school, you will be required to go through an in-depth training program of five weeks. This is a residential program that will train you on various aspects of the curriculum and create lesson plans for the subject, how to assess a student's program, how to manage the resources available, and soft skills like being an effective communicator, etc. Throughout, you will be under the direct guidance of a Program Manager and in-house Trainers will give the required training in technical aspects.

Remuneration

Selected Fellows will receive a monthly salary of Rs. 20,412 per month. In case you have to work in a city that is not where your residence is located, you will be provided a housing allowance in the range of Rs. 5,300 to Rs. 10,000, this depending on the city in which you will be working. You will also get some allowance towards the purchase of school supplies.

Eligibility criteria to join Teach for India Fellowship Program

While there is no age limit to join the program, with professionals also welcome to join, there are other criteria that you need to fulfill, as follows-

Nationality

Both Indian citizens and foreign nations of Indian origin are welcome to apply, but applications from foreign citizens who are not of Indian origin will not be accepted. Note that if you are applying as a foreign national of Indian origin, you must have a valid Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, which can be applied for through the website of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India where the online OCI registration form is available. Since the procedure to acquire the OCI card takes quite a few months, it is best to apply right away once you have decided on joining the Fellowship program.

Academic Qualification

You need to have a Graduate Degree from any recognized college or university latest by June/July 2021 and have completed all coursework that is required for that degree program by the last week of May 2021. Your certificate (and Postgraduate certificate if applicable) will be reviewed during the selection process and you should have passed all the required coursework indicated in the degree transcripts at the time of the interview.

Language skills

Since the medium of teaching is English, fluency in English is mandatory. The training and support sessions that you require to attend as scheduled will also be in English only. It is not necessary to know the regional language where the school is located, although this will be generally advantageous in communicating with the locals.

General skills

You should have good interpersonal skills to be able to interact with co-teachers and school staff, trainers, etc and be able to have an analytical ability to resolve problems quickly and efficiently. Self-motivation with a keenness and determination to become a successful educator par excellence would definitely be expected, too.

Application procedure

Now that you are 100% enthusiastic and committed to a teaching career with the Teach for India Fellowship program you can submit your application online .

The application includes an online test of one hour's duration to gauge your English language abilities and how you effectively judge a particular situation. You must do this test within three days of submitting the online application form so that you can move on to the next step, which, if applicable involves an interview on phone with follow-up questions. Once you have successfully gone through the test and interview, you will require to visit the Assessment Centre for the final evaluation. This includes taking part in a group activity, completing a problem-solving activity, and teach a lesson for five minutes. Having completed all these activities in a satisfactory manner, you will then attend a personal interview (up to one hour) taken by a community member of the Teach for India organization.
