National Institute of Design (NID) is a premier design institute in India with campuses at various cities across the country. It is an autonomous institute and directly comes under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry. NID was first established in Ahmedabad, Gujarat in the year 1961. Much later in 2004, the Gandhinagar campus, which specializes in postgraduate courses, came into existence. In 2006 another new campus was opened at Bengaluru, especially for research and development works in the field of design. In recent times four more campuses of NID have come up at Vijayawada, Bhopal, Kurukshetra and Jorhat. Just like prestigious institutes like the IITs, IIMs, and NITs, the NIDs get counted as 'Institutes of National Importance'.



NID offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various design domains. There are also opportunities for research in the field of design at NID. It offers a PhD in Design programme along with several international programmes on design as well. The institute has often been ranked very high among the top design colleges of the world. Because of its worldwide reputation, there are regular academic exchanges between NID and other leading design institutions from Europe, America and elsewhere.

Design domains

The various disciplines in the field of design that are offered by NID at its campuses are:
  1. Animation Film Design
  2. Ceramic and Glass Design
  3. Exhibition Design
  4. Film and Video Communication
  5. Furniture and Interior Design
  6. Graphic Design
  7. Product Design
  8. Textile Design

NID is currently accepting applications for its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in design. The programmes on offer and their availability at respective campuses are listed below.

  1. Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) – The B.Des. course is available at NID's Ahmedabad, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Assam campuses.
  2. Master of Design (M.Des.) – The M.Des. course is available at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru campuses.




Eligibility criteria – B.Des.

The eligibility criteria for applying for the B.Des. course at NID is as follows:
  • The applicant should have passed 10+2 or appearing for the same in the current year from any recognized board, be it CBSE, ICSE, IB, state board, etc.
  • Applicants from any discipline can apply for this course, irrespective of whether they have a science, arts, commerce or humanities background.

Age limit:
  1. For the academic session 2021-2022, General and EWS (General) Category candidates who have been born on or after July 01, 2001, can only apply.
  2. For candidates belonging to the SC, ST and OBC-NCL categories, an additional two years relaxation in age is admissible.
  3. PwD candidates can avail of a relaxation of four years in age.

Foreign citizens too can apply for the B.Des. course under the overseas category. Though a few supernumerary seats are reserved for such candidates in some of the NID campuses, there aren't any relaxation in age for them.

Eligibility criteria – M.Des.

The following criteria should be fulfilled by the candidates before applying for the Master of Design programme.
  • The applicant should hold a 4-year duration bachelor degree in any discipline after their 10+2 from a recognized educational institution. They should have passed the degree examination before the document verification process that is done mostly by July/August in the year of admission.
    Or
  • Should hold a 4-year long diploma in Design/Fine Arts/Applied Arts/ Architecture after 10+2 from a recognized institution. The final year results should be available by July/August.
    Or
  • Should hold a minimum 3-year long bachelor degree after 10+2 and completed a year prior to admission. For the 2021-22 session, the degree should have been completed by 2020.

Overseas category candidates too may apply for the above M.Des. course. They should, however, fulfill either of the eligibility conditions as mentioned above.

Programme fees

The semester wise programme fees for the B.Des. and M.Des courses are as follows.
B.Des.:
Tuition fee: INR 1,61,525
Hostel fee: INR 15,000
Apart from the above fees, there is a mess charge and a refundable deposit that has to be paid at the time of admission. For candidates from SAARC countries, the semester wise fees come to around USD 3,155, including hostel charges. For candidates from the rest of the world, the program fees are USD 6,655, including hostel fee.

M.Des.:
Tuition fee: INR 1,86,400
Hostel fee: INR 15,000
For overseas candidates, the semester wise fee for M.Des. programme is the same as that for the B.Des. programme. For both the programmes, scholarships are provided to the deserving students. The college also provides assistance in seeking an educational loan.

Mode of selection

Candidates for the above programmes are selected on the basis of DAT or the Design Aptitude Test. The test is conducted by NID in two stages, the NID DAT (Prelims) and the NID DAT (Mains). The candidates have to first clear the Prelims before appearing for the Mains. The Prelims is a 3-hour duration written test, which has both objective and subjective questions.

The DAT Mains on the other hand is a Studio Test and also comprises of an interview round. On qualifying the Mains, the candidates are called for a counselling session. The DAT Prelims sample papers for both bachelors and the master's programme are available at the NID website.

  • Last date for submission of online application – February 07, 2021 by 4 pm
  • Dates for DAT Prelims and DAT Mains – yet to be notified

How to apply

  • Step 1: To apply for any of the courses at NID, one has to first visit the admission page of National Institute of Design. Signup to the online application portal by providing your email id and mobile number.

  • Step 2: On successful signup, login to the portal and fill up the online application form by providing necessary personal and academic details. For those applying for the master's programme have to additionally provide details about their work experience, if any.

  • Step 3: After filling up the details, upload scanned copies of your photograph, signature and relevant certificates.

  • Step 4: Pay the application fee online and after final submission, take out a print out of the application form.
