    Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is an autonomous institute set up by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, New Delhi. In WII research on wildlife is conducted particularly on Biodiversity, Endangered Species, Habitat Ecology and Climate Change. Besides, the study is conducted in wildlife management, Wildlife Policy, Wildlife Forensics, Spatial Modelling, Ecotoxicology and Eco-development.     MSc Wildlife Sciences

    Wildlife Science is essentially a field-based subject, and therefore due emphasis is given to this. Master's degree in Wildlife Sciences is a full-time two-year's course offered by Wildlife Institute Dehradun. The course was started to provide education in wildlife conservation so that the species can be prevented from extinction.

    Programme Objectives

    MSc Wildlife Sciences is aimed to develop trained biologists in the field of Wildlife Sciences to meet the increasing demand for research and monitoring of wildlife and their habitats. The course provides an opportunity of learning about wildlife through practical experience and several visits and tours to the National Parks, Wetland, Mountains, etc. are conducted for the students. Orientation tour, Management Tours, Techniques tours, High Altitude Techniques tours are also a part of the curriculum. Candidates also learn conservation practices and management strategies in this course. MSc Wildlife Science Course of WII is affiliated with Saurashtra University, Rajkot, Gujarat, hence after the course, completion students will be awarded a degree from Saurashtra University.

    Scope of MSc Wildlife Sciences

    After completing an MSc in Wildlife Sciences, the candidates will get various career opportunities in the government and private sectors. The candidates can get a job in Zoos, Zoological parks, National Park, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Research Institutes, Forests Department, Wildlife Departments etc. and work as a forest officer, forester, forest range officer, forestry technician/staff, Consultant, field investigator etc. Besides, they can join an NGO or any academic institution depending upon their interest.

    Eligibility Criteria

    The candidates who wish to get admission in Master's Degree Course at Wildlife Institute of India must have passed a degree in Bachelor of Science with Biological Science as a major subject. The candidates who have BSc Veterinary Sciences, BSc Forestry, BSc Agriculture and BSc Environmental Sciences are also eligible to apply for the MSc Wildlife Sciences. They must have a minimum of fifteen years of formal education, either 10+2+3 or 11+2+2.

    Course Structure

    The course has been designed in such a way that student will gain theoretical understanding and developing practical skills simultaneously. Hence, equal importance has been given to both theory and practicals and Classroom lectures, practical assignments, presentations, group discussions and extended field visits/tours are included in the course curriculum. Evaluation in the course is done by a Choice-based Credit System. The course has four-semester, including 24 credits each. Each semester includes theory papers, projects assignments, laboratory practicals, field visits/tours etc. Evaluation of the student performance will be done at the end of each semester. The first three semesters will have 3 papers, one assignment, one tour journal and laboratory/field practical each. In the fourth semester, there will be a Dissertation, Power-point Presentation, Poster Presentation and Viva-voce. The teaching mode will include both classroom teaching (60%) and interactive learning (40%) so that the student will understand the basic concepts of the subject and become motivated and learn hands-on experience as well. There will be equal involvement of students and teachers in interactive learning discussion.

    Dissertation Programme

    Dissertation programme will be of six-months duration out of which field/lab work will be of four months and two months for data analysis and writing. For the dissertation programme, the candidates will have to prepare and submit a pre-proposal (1000 words) and must be submitted by the end of the third semester (August month). Each submitted pre-proposal will be evaluated by a Dissertation Committee. For each selected pre-proposal, a student dissertation committee will be formed, which will submit the detailed proposal by the first week of the fourth semester (December). After approval, the work on the dissertation will be started in the third week of December.

    Examinations

    In the first three semesters, at the end of each semester, there will be external theory paper examinations (70 marks) conducted by Saurashtra University. There will be an internal examination (30 marks) also conducted by the respective paper coordinator(s). In the fourth semester, evaluation of the dissertation will be done by external examiners by presentation and viva-voce. Minimum passing marks are 40% in theory and 40% in dissertation viva-voce examinations.

    Important points

    • A minimum of 80% attendance is required to be eligible to appear in the University Examinations.
    • The candidates must attend all the lectures, field tours, laboratory practicals.
    • Field visits will be conducted during the first three semesters of the course.
    • There will be 20 working days in a month, and three lectures per day in the forenoon.

    Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun is a Deemed University and premier institute in the Forestry sector in India. The institute offers several multidimensional courses like MSc, PG Diploma courses and PhD Courses.     MSc Environmental Management

    Master's degree in Environmental Management is a full-time two-year's course offered by Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.

    Programme Objectives

    The programme makes aware the students of the environmental problems and also provide knowledge of the possible solutions and their management.     MSc Wood Science and Technology

    Master's degree in Wood Science and Technology is a full-time two-year course offered by Forest Research Institute, Dehradun.

    Programme Objective

    It is a perfect course for the students who wish to pursue a Master's in Wood Science and Technology and make their career as a Wood Science professional. Under this programme, the student learns the science and technology of wood as a natural resource and the programme also develops awareness among the student about the problems related to wood as basic material to manufacture various useful products.     FRI Courses Admission Procedure

    Admission to Master's degree courses of FRI is done through a National Level Entrance Exam conducted by Forest Research Institute Dehradun. Every year online applications are asked from interested and eligible candidates. The exam is conducted in 12 major cities across the country including Bangalore, Chandigarh, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Delhi, Jabalpur, Jodhpur, Jorhat, Kolkata, Lucknow, Ranchi and Shimla. The candidates are required to score a minimum of 50% marks (General Category) and 45% marks (for SC/ST category).
