Application open for ICMR-NIRRH PhD Admissions 2020-21

National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health, Mumbai, has released an official notification and invited applications for PhD Admissions 2020-21. Eligible candidates can apply for the same. About NIRRH

National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health, Mumbai is working in the field of reproductive health and to address reproductive health-related issues. The main aim of the institute is "Good Reproductive Health for All". It is a premier institute of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). PhD programme of NIRRH is affiliated with the University of Mumbai. Institute offers a PhD degree in Life Sciences, Applied Biology and Biochemistry. PhD research areas available at the institutes are Bioinformatics, Fertility Regulation, Genetic Disorders, HIV/STIs/RTIs, Infertility and Reproductive Disorders, Immunology, Maternal and Child Health, Microbiology, Osteoporosis, Reproductive cancers, Reproductive Toxicology Stem Cell Biology, and Structural Biology. Currently, the institute has released an official notification (Advertisement No. 1/NIRRH/Ph.D. 2020-21) for admission to PhD Programme–2020-21 and invited applications from the desired student having an excellent academic track record.

Benefits to the Students

Fellowship: The candidate admitted to the PhD programme at NIRRH and who have qualified for any of the examinations such as CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, ICMR-JRF, DBT-JRF will be eligible to receive a fellowship as per the rules and regulations of the funding agency. However, those students who do not possess any JRF examination qualification will also be provided with an institutional fellowship of Rs.8000/- monthly for a period of a maximum of two years. The institution fellowship will be started only after the successful completion of PhD coursework and presentation of the proposal. After completion of two years, the candidates will have to search for a fellowship from other funding agencies.

Hostel Facility: Hostel facilities for women candidates may be available upon request.

Eligibility Criteria

Nativity: The candidates must be an Indian citizen.

Educational Qualification:
  1. The candidates must hold a post-graduate degree like MSc Life Sciences or MSc Biochemistry or MSc Biotechnology or MSc Microbiology or MSc Zoology or MSc Bioinformaticsor MSc Biophysics or MBBS or MD Degree from any recognised Indian university. They must have obtained a minimum of aggregate 60% marks (for General, OWC & EWS Category)/55% marks (for SC/ST/PWD category candidates) or Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) from higher secondary (10+2) onwards. Statement of conversion of CGPA to percentage issued by the university must be annexed if CGPA is not based on a 10-point scale. Candidates whose results are awaited are also eligible to apply for PhD programme 2020-21. However, they will have to submit proof of a qualifying degree before joining the course.
  2. The candidates must have qualified for any one exam such as PhD Entrance exam (PET) conducted by the University of Mumbai or CSIR-UGC NET (JRF or LS) or GATE (Life Sciences/ Biotechnology) or JRF examination conducted by ICMR/DBT or State Entrance Test (SET)/State Level Entrance Test (SLET) (Life Sciences/ Microbiology/ Biotechnology/ Biochemistry) OR valid DST-Inspire fellowship.
Age Limit: General and EWS Category candidates applying for the PhD programme must not cross an upper age limit of 28 years (on 11th January 2021). However, there will be an age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/ PWD/ Women candidates and 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates.

Reservation: There will be a reservation in seats as per the UGC rules followed by the University of Mumbai.

Points to Note
  • Seats for the candidates belongs to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) may change and are subject to further direction/clarification of the Government of India. To avail of the reservation benefits, the EWS candidates will have to produce an Income and Asset Certificate issued by a Competent Authority.
  • All the rights to change the minimum conditions of eligibility are with the Director NIRRH. The decision of the Director and Selection Committee will be final.

Application Procedure

To apply for admission in the PhD program at NIRRH, the candidate must visit the official website of NIRRH. The mode of application submission is online only and the applications submitted through any other mode will not be considered. The application form is available on the website and can be filled and submitted online. Applicants need to submit an application fee as well. For General and OBC category candidates, there will be an application fee of Rs.300/-+ transaction charges. Whereas there will be no application fee for SC/ST/PWD and EWS candidates. The application fee is non-refundable. The fee is to be paid via online mode only. Incomplete applications or applications without an application fee (as applicable) will not be considered. If any candidate fee some issue while submitting the online application, he/she may email 'pgstudies@nirrh.res.in.'

Selection Procedure

The final selection of the candidates for admission in PhD will be done based on an online interview. First, the candidates will be shortlisted and a list of shortlisted students along with the interview schedule will be displayed on the institute's website and the ICMR website. A list of PhD guides (who have vacant seats in their laboratories) and tentative research projects titles will be provided to shortlisted candidates. Candidates must note that the no travelling allowance shall be provided by the Institute attending an interview or at any stage of the admission process.
