Admissions open for PhD 2020-21 in AIIMS Bhubaneswar

About AIIMS, Bhubneswar

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar is one of the leading medical Institutes which provides healthcare services to the general public. It was established by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India through the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Act, 2012 and under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) scheme along with the six other new AIIMS in all over India including AIIMS Patna, AIIMS Raipur, AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, AIIMS Jaipur and AIIMS Rishikesh apart from the one at AIIMS New Delhi. It is an autonomous institute of national importance. Every year, AIIMS Bhubaneswar calls applications for admission in PhD programmes against the vacant seats for the July/August session. Official notification is issued by the institute. Currently, AIIMS Bhubneswar is inviting applications for admission to PhD programmes.

Details of PhD Programmes

PhD Research Areas

At AIIMS Bhubaneswar, both full-time and part-time PhD programmes are available. PhD programme offered in the research areas of Medical Sciences and Health Sciences covering Biochemistry, Community Medicine and Family Medicine, Microbiology, Pathology, Physiology and Pharmacology etc. Research scholars will be free to choose any of the research areas according to their interest and as per the expertise of the supervisor.

PhD Programme Duration

The research scholars registered for the full-time PhD programme will have to complete the research work of a minimum of three years' duration from the date of registration. However, the research work completion period must not exceed five-years. In the case of in-service candidates, the maximum period for research work completion will be six-years from the date of registration. Those candidates who cannot complete their research work within the stipulated period will have to re-register for the PhD programme.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate who wishes to take admission in a PhD programme at AIIMS Bhubaneswar must satisfy the following requirements:
  1. The candidates who possess a medical degree must have passed MBBS or BDS with at least 55% aggregate marks or MD/MS/MDS/DM/M.Ch in the concerned subject or Diplomat of National Board (DNB) Examination.
  2. The non-medical candidates must have passed 2-years master degree, i.e. MSc Life Sciences/ Biomedical Sciences (Other than M.Sc. Nursing) or MTech with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (for General Category) and 50% marks (for SC/ST/OBC/OPH category candidates) from a recognised Indian university or equivalent. The candidates who have obtained a Master's Degree through distant learning education are not eligible to apply for PhD admission
  3. The non-medical candidates should have qualified in any one of the following national entrance tests such as in the last 2 years and must have a valid fellowship from the following: Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF, UGC–JRF, CSIR-JRF, ICMR–JRF, DBT–JRF, NBHM screening test, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam, DST- INSPIRE fellowship, or any other fellowship conducted for the PhD programmes.
  4. Candidates who are employed in the Central Govt./Semi Govt./Autonomous organization must send their applications through the proper channel.  At the time of admission to the PhD course, they will have to produce a 'No Objection Certificate" from their employer.
  5. The candidates whose results are awaited are also eligible to apply.
  6. AIIMS Faculty/Scientific Staff who are interested to join the PhD programme will be considered as in-service candidates.
  7. A candidate, who is working in the institute in extramural research projects as a Research Fellow, is also eligible for the programme provided, he/she possesses the required educational qualifications.
  8. A teacher of the Institute holding a substantive post who is relieved on study leave with salary for not less than two years for pursuing a PhD program.

PhD programmes admission seekers must visit the official website of AIIMS Bhubneswar and read all the instructions carefully. The application form for PhD programmes is available at the website of AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The application form can be downloaded from there and the filled-in application form must be forwarded through Speed Post to the following address:

The envelope should be marked as "AIIMS BBSR PhD 2020-21". Incomplete applications and applications received after the closing date will be disqualified.

The candidates will have to submit an application fee along with the application form. Details of the application fee are as follows:
  • General/OBC category: INR 1500/- + transaction Charges as applicable.
  • SC/ST category: INR 1200/- + transaction Charges as applicable bank

Selection Procedure 

The selection of the candidates for admission to PhD programmes will be done based on the interview. Screening of applications will be done and candidates will be shortlisted. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for a personal interview. Interview will be held at Board Room, Administrative Building, AIIMS Bhubneswar.
