How to Apply for IIT Kanpur SURGE Summer Internship Program 2021

Are you studying in an undergraduate programme and searching for an internship? The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has released an official notification of SURGE Internship Program 2021 for IITK, non-IITK & other country's students. Interested students can find the details of the internship program, eligibility, funding details and application procedure in this article.

About the SURGE Program

The Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence (SURGE) program is offered by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. The scheme is open to all IITK students, non-IITK students, and other countries as well. SURGE internships offer short-term research projects that are focused and help to build the intellectual abilities of students. Currently, the IIT, Kanpur has invited applications for the Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence (SURGE) 2021 Program from the eligible candidates. Note for students that this year SURGE Internship program will be conducted in Online Mode because of COVID-19.

Details of Internship

During the SURGE internship program, the participants will have to give a presentation. There will be two presentations during the whole internship program:
  1. After four weeks / in the middle of the internship: It will be a mid-term presentation before a review committee. The review committee will comprise a group of academic staff members. Feedback and suggestions given by the committee will be incorporated in the work that will be helpful to improve the quality of work.
  2. At the end of the internship: This will be a poster presentation of the work done by the interns during the internship period at IITK that will be open to the public. However, the evaluation will be done by faculty members.

Duration of the Internship Program
The SURGE internship program will be of approximately 10 weeks duration starting from 14th June 2021 and ending on 22nd August 2021.

Certificate of Internship
Candidates will receive completion certificates, and those who will produce exception quality research will get an award and a commendation certificate.

Funding Details
The funding during the SURGE internship program will be of four types:

Institute Funded or Funding from SURGE: A stipend of Rs 12,500/- for 08 weeks' duration will be provided to the students who will work under "Funding from SURGE" only at IITK.

IITK Project Funded: Under this type of funding, IIT Kanpur faculty members funded projects will be offered to the students.

Self Funded: Under this type of funding, students will get an opportunity to work on the projects of faculty members of IIT Kanpur but will not receive any funding.

Industry-IITK tie-up: Under the Industry-IITK tie-up, the students will work on real-world projects proposed by the industries under the supervision of mentors from both IIT Kanpur and the industry. The stipend will also be paid by the industry. Only IIT Kanpur students can participate in this type of funding.

Eligibility Criteria


IIT K Students
Under the SURGE program for IITK students, an opportunity will be given to the IITK students to work with a chosen mentor at IITK. IITK student who will satisfy the following eligibility criteria at the time of starting of internship can join the internship program:
  • The candidates must have completed the 2nd and 3rd years of BTech /BS.
  • They must have completed the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a dual degree course.
  • They must have completed the 1st year of a 2-year's MSc degree course.

Non-IITK Students
Under the scheme, The SURGE internship scheme for non-IITK, non-IITK Students from any college are eligible to apply. They will join a summer project at IIT Kanpur. The scheme is open to all college provided that they must fulfil the following criteria at the time of joining of internship:
  • They must have completed the 3rd semester of B.Tech/ BE/ B-Arch/ BS.
  • The students with a five-year degree program must have completed the 3rd and 4th year.
  • The students with a student pursuing a BSc or BA must have completed 2nd year of a degree course.
  • The candidates who are doing a 2-year's MSc degree course must have completed 1st year of a degree course.

Other Countries/SAARC Countries Students
The SURGE program has been opened to UG students from other SAARC countries, including Nepal and Bhutan. The must fulfil the following eligibility criteria to apply for a summer project at IIT Kanpur:
  • They must have completed the 3rd year of BTech /BE/B-Arch/BS.
  • They must have completed the 3rd & 4th year of a 5-year's degree program.
  • They must have completed the 2nd year of the BSc/BA degree course.

Document to be uploaded

Students must keep ready the following documents for upload before filling the online application form:

For IIT K Students
  1. Recent Passport size photograph (in jpg format, size up to 1MB)
  2. Research proposal of 500 words & Current Transcript in a single file (in PDF format, size up to 3 MB)
  3. Two signed recommendation letters from Professors (Format available at the official website)
  4. One signed letter of Mentor Certification from Professor (Format available at the official website)

For Non-IIT K Students and Other countries Students
  1. Recent Passport size photograph (in jpg format, size up to 1MB)
  2. Research proposal of 500 words & Current Transcript in a single file (in PDF format, size up to 3 MB)
  3. Recommendation Letter (1 no.) on the institute's letterhead or letterhead of any faculty member who belongs to the applicant' institute (Single PDF file, size up to 1 MB)
  4. Recommendation Letter (2 nos.) on the institute's letterhead or letterhead of any faculty member who belongs to the applicant' institute (Single PDF file, size up to 1 MB)

How to Apply?

The candidates interested to apply for the SURGE internship need to apply through online mode only. The candidates must visit the official website of IITK SURGE and read the instruction carefully before applying for the internship. pay an application fee of Rs.500/- (only for NON-IITK Students) using SBI Collect. The online application form can be filled in two steps:

Step 1: Registration for SURGE Internship Program 2021Interested candidates including IITK, Non-IITK, and other SAARC country's students must register themselves by visiting the Online Registration Portal. They must complete the registration by filling in all the required details like name, email ID, mobile no. etc. Upon successful registration, an email containing the login credentials will be sent to the registered email ID of the student.

Step 2: An online application fee of Rs.500/- will have to be paid for the SURGE internship by Non-IITK students only. It is required that candidates must go through the payment procedure before going for payment. The application fee is to be paid through the State Bank Collect link. After payment completion, the students must note the Transaction ID and also save the payment receipt (pdf format) for further use.

Step 3: In this step, the candidates will have to fill the online application form through the application portal. To fill the application form, the candidates must log in using the login credentials mentioned in the mail and complete the online application form.

Step 4: Now, in this step, candidates (Non-IITK students only) will have to put the Transaction ID and upload the payment receipt in pdf format. The candidates must upload all relevant documents and submit the application. After successful submission of an online application, an application number will be generated and will be sent to the candidate's email ID. The candidate must save the Application Number for future correspondence. Please note that incomplete or incorrect applications will be rejected. After selection, the participants will have to pay the SURGE administrative charges of Rs.900/- (non-refundable).

This internship is open for a wide spectrum of students- IIT students or non-IIT students. Those students who are interested to apply for it should make a proposed summary project report in 500 words on some contemporary subject which looks interesting and prospecting in the present-day business environment.

There are many topics that can be chosen by the prospective candidates for submitting along with the application form for this coveted short research assignment. I can suggest some of them as follows -
1. Controlling the Robots from a remote location.
2. Forecasting of wind energy farms populations in India in the next 50 years.
3. Embedded technologies.
4. Understanding the requirement of the network, computer, and data security in a business environment.
5. Developing new accounting theories.

There is a myriad of possibilities for short projects and the above are only the indicative ones.
