Applications open for the B4 Young Scientist program at the LMFSAI, Harvard University


Are you a Life Sciences student and interested to learn the advancement in Life Science and Health care? The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, Harvard University has opened registration for an online Workshop on "Big Data in Life Sciences and Healthcare" under B4 Young Scientist Program. Eligible candidates can apply for the same. Read this article to know the eligibility and application procedure for registration for the program.

About the Program

The  Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, Harvard University hosts a workshop under the "Young Scientist Development Course." The Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB), Bangalore, a non-profit organization, will organize the short duration online workshop/course with the support of the Building Bharat-Boston Biosciences (B4) Program funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India Program will be conducted at the Mittal Institute. Lectures in the workshop will be delivered by eminent speakers from  Harvard University, Broad Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), academicians and industry professionals. Nowadays due to the proliferation of science, technology and health care sciences like medical imaging, cellular imaging, computational neurosciences, genomics and medical diagnostics huge data is generated and to manage this data is the biggest challenge. The short term course will provide an opportunity for the students to be familiar with the use of big data in precision medicine, genomics, pharma and drug discovery, Artificial Intelligence and machine learning in the analysis of biological and medical imaging data and will provide hand-on-training to the students.  Under this program, talented Indian students who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate or doctoral courses and are enrolled in the science/technology higher institution in India are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Indian students are eligible to apply for this programme
  • Academic Qualification:: The candidates who wish to join this programme must have currently enrolled in any Doctoral research programme (including Life Sciences or Biotechnology or Bioinformatics or Engineering or any relevant research areas) or  Master's degree programme (MSc or MBBS or M.Pharm or ME or M.Tech and similar programs). They must be enrolled in courses in recognised  Indian institutions


Application Procedure 

The candidates must register themselves for the programme by visiting the website of the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, Harvard University. In the case of non-Harvard-affiliated candidates, to apply for the programme the candidates will have to request an XID. The candidates will receive an XID through email. Those who will not receive must check their junk/spam folders also. Candidates must wait for 24hrs after activating XID and thereafter apply for the application of the Bioimaging workshop "B4 Big Data Workshop 2021" by logging in with your XID. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Documents to be Uploaded

After application filling, the candidates must upload the following documents to complete the application. All the documents required to be uploaded in a single PDF file (maximum size-2 MB):
  1. Latest CV (one-page)
  2. Statement of Interest (one-page): In the Statement of interest, the candidate must mention the reason to join the programme and hope to learn from it. 
  3. Educational Documents: It must include all mark sheet and certificates(semester/year wise) from Bachelor's degree courses onwards.
  4. Recommendation Letters: The candidates are required to submit two recommendation letters on the letterhead of the recommender with their signatures. An email containing the link for uploading the recommendation letters will be sent from the CARAT system to the recommender and the recommender will have to upload the recommendation letter.

Selection Procedure

The selection process will be highly competitive and a review of the application will be done by a panel of faculty. Further, the decision of the panel will be final. Note: The candidates should not communicate directly to Harvard faculty regarding the workshop and grant opportunities.

The postgraduates or research scholars in life sciences have a large data base related to their respective fields but assimilating data and using computer applications for using the data in a structured way and for the research topic in hand is the actual action that is to be taken by the students. It is in that context that this type of workshop will be beneficial in learning the professional techniques for data mining and data presentation for showcasing the project or research work to the scientific and technical community. The eligible candidates should try to get selected in this online worksop giving good opportunity which will help them in completing any project in life science topics in their workplace and enrich them with more experience in the niche area.
