National Institute of Open Schooling online applications for admissions 2021


Looking for the NIOS 2021-22 admissions notification for school students and vocational courses? National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India has issued the admission notification for the academic session 2021-22 for which applications will open on 1st April 2021. The entire admission procedure is in digitalized mode and can be done either through the NIOS website or through the NIOS mobile app 24x7. Online registration can also be done with guidance at a nearby NIOS Facilitation Center.

About NIOS

NIOS provides education through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode with the flexibility to learn at your own pace from anywhere in the world. Both academic and vocational courses are offered with the freedom to learn multiple languages and subjects. The curriculum and study material are developed by NIOS in consultation with academic experts. The study material is delivered through postal mail free of cost, as this is included in the fee of the course in which you are enrolled. Live lectures are scheduled on Mukta Vidya Vani, the online streaming audio service of NIOS that is available through its website as also the Television channels e-Vidya 10 (for secondary students) and e-Vidya 12 (for senior secondary students). Support is provided via email and a toll-free number, and there are over 7000 Study Centers with 23 Regional Centers and two sub-regional centres.

Some prominent features of NIOS programs include a flexible exam system with an on-demand exam also available and a choice of subject combinations, with a credit accumulation facility for five years. Personal Contact Programs are organized as well, as also Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMA). Even Indian Army personnel can complete Class 10 and 12 through NIOS distance education courses.

Open Basic Programs

These are for children age six to 14 years, as also for adults. There are three levels-
Level-A – This is equivalent to Class 3.
Level-B – This is equivalent to Class 6.
Level-C – This is equivalent to Class 8.

Secondary and Senior Secondary Programs

At the Secondary level, there are 36 subjects, including 18 languages. At the Senior Secondary level, there are 41 subjects, including 12 languages.

Vocational Programs

There are currently 103 courses in the areas of-

  • Engineering and Technology
  • Health and Paramedical
  • Home Science and Hospitality
  • Computer and IT
  • Business and Commerce
  • Teacher Training




Eligibility requirements

For the Secondary Course (Class 10): Passed class VIII and a proof of attaining 14 years of age. There is no upper age limit.

For the Senior Secondary Course (Class 12): Passed the Secondary course from a recognised Board with a minimum age of 15 years. There is no upper age limit.

Note: Valid proof of date of birth is the certificate of date of birth issued by any Govt. authorized body, such as the Municipal Corporation, the Village Panchayat, etc that is authorised by the Registrar, Birth and Death, Government of India. Aadhaar Card issued by a Govt. agency is also a valid proof of date of birth. In the case of orphans, street children etc., a medical certificate in respect of age issued by a Government Hospital is accepted as a valid proof of date of birth.

How to apply for NIOS admissions

You can register and apply through the NIOS official website or the Student Portal of NIOS . Before doing so, ensure that you read all the instructions carefully and remember to select your choice of subjects and a Study Center.

You need to keep ready scanned images of requisite documents for the online registration process. These include a recent passport size colour photo, your signature (preferably in black ink), valid Identity and residence proof, proof of date of birth, and academic mark sheets, as also another relevant document as applicable.

Valid ID proof can be any one of these- Aadhaar Number, Aadhaar Enrolment number, Passport number, Ration Card number, Bank Account number or any other valid Government Identity Card.

Valid proof of Residence can be any of these - Ration Card or Aadhar Card or an appointment letter from the Employer on the official Letter Head or any Utility Bill (such as telephone, electricity, etc) or Statement of running Bank Account or Income Tax Assessment Order or Voter Identity Card. In the case of a minor, a parent's passport is acceptable and in case of a residence in rented accommodation, a copy of proof of Permanent Address along with the present Rent Agreement should be submitted.

Valid proof of Date of Birth in case of the Secondary Course: This can be any of these- birth certificate or passport or Transfer Certificate/School Leaving Certificate or Aadhaar Card with the date of birth printed on it.

Academic documents: Class 8th mark sheet or Self Certificate in case of secondary course and Class 10th mark sheet/Certificate in case of Senior Secondary Course. Original scanned copy of the failed mark sheet issued by the Parent Board of the School Education in case registration is for Stream- 2, 3 or 4.

Caste certificates: A self-attested true copy of Social Category/SC, ST or OBC Caste Certificate if applicable.

Other documents if applicable: Ex-serviceman Certificate, and Disability Certificate.

On successfully submitting the online application, make the fee payment online. The payment can be made later also. However, this must be done within 10 days of submitting the online application and within five days if you submit the online application towards the closing date for a particular Block of admission. Once the payment is done, you will not be able to make any changes to the online application form.



Guidelines on selecting the right Stream for NIOS admissions

You can apply for one of the four streams for online admissions, namely-
Stream-1 is for all learners, with Block-1 (appear for the exam in April/May) and Block-2 (appear for the exam in October/November).

Stream-2 is for all learners who want to appear for the exam in October/November. You can register for this Stream if (i) you have already passed the Secondary exam from a recognized Board and wish to take part-admission in one subject or up to four subjects for updating your qualification, or (ii) you appeared but could not clear the exam, or (iii) you were eligible but could not appear in the Public exam of the Secondary/Senior Secondary level from any recognized Examination Board. For all of these, you are required to fulfil the entry requirement of age and have valid address proof as is required.

Stream-3 is for learners who want to appear under the On-Demand Examination System (ODES) for the Secondary level. You can register for this Stream if (i) you have already passed the Secondary exam from a recognized Board and wish to take part-admission in one subject or up to four subjects for updating your qualification, or (ii) you had appeared but could not clear the exam, or (iii) you were eligible but could not appear in the Public exam of the Secondary level from any recognized Board and want to appear through the ODE system for the secondary level only. For all these, you should fulfil the entry requirements of age and address proof as is required.

Stream-4 is for learners who want to appear under the On Demand Examination System (ODES) for the Senior Secondary level. You can register for this Stream if (i) you have already passed the Senior Secondary or above from any recognized Board/University and wish to take part-admission in one subject or up to four subjects for updating your qualification, or (ii) you who had appeared but could not clear the exam, or (iii) you were eligible but could not appear in the Public exam of the Senior Secondary level from any recognized Board and want to appear through ODE at the Senior Secondary level. For all these, you should fulfil the entry requirements of age and address proof as is required.
