About IIT, Bhubaneswar

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bhubaneswar, located in Odisha, was established in 2008 as a public technical university by the Government of India. Later it was declared as IIT by MHRD. Institute offers B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD programmes. Currently, the institute has invited applications from highly motivated students for admission in PhD programmes for the session 2021-22.

Categorization of Students for PhD Admission

Admission to PhD Programmes at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar is available in the three categories. Details of the categories and their eligibility is given as follow:
  1. Institute Scholar: It is a full-time assistantship. Under this category, the student will get an Institute Research Assistantship or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of UGC/CSIR-NET or any other doctoral fellowship offered by the Government of India. To be eligible for admission in this category, the candidates must possess the minimum qualifications required for admission in the PhD Programme. However, SC/ST/PwD candidates will be given a relaxation of up to 5% marks in all academic examination levels.
  2. Sponsored Scholar: These candidates must possess the minimum qualifications required for admission in the PhD Programme. Unlike institute scholars, the sponsored candidates will not be eligible for Institute Research Assistantship. They must also be working in any of the R&D organisations such as Government Departments, Ministries, Industrial R&D organisations, Public Undertakings, recognised autonomous bodies, recognised universities or colleges etc. The service period must be at least three years.
  3. Project Scholar: Under this category, the scholars who are working on sponsored research projects at IIT Bhubaneswar are eligible. To be eligible they must meet the applicable eligibility criteria for admission in PhD. These candidates can also apply for the Institute Research Assistantship after the tenure of the project is over, provided that they must have a valid GATE score.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Admission

PhD (Engineering)
The candidates must have M.Tech or ME or equivalent degree with at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (on a 10-point scale) with a  valid GATE score.
OR
The candidates must have B.Tech or BE or equivalent degree with at least 70% marks or 7.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale) with a valid GATE score or have secured a UGC/CSIR-NET JRF. The candidates must have a  good academic track record. 
OR
The candidates must have a Master's degree in Science or equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (on a 10-point scale) with a valid GATE score or have secured a UGC/CSIR-NET JRF. The candidates must have a  good academic track record. 
The candidates must have scored at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (on 10 point scale) in all other examinations. However, one relaxation (up to 10% marks) either at Xth or XIIth level examination is allowed. 

PhD (Basic Science)
The candidates must have a Master's or equivalent degree in basic sciences in any relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (on a 10-point scale). The candidates must have a good academic track record. 
OR
The candidates must have a degree in Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree with at least 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA (on a 10-point scale) with a consistently good academic record. 
The candidates must have scored at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (on 10 point scale) in all other examinations. However, one relaxation (up to 10% marks) either at Xth or XIIth level examination is allowed.
The candidate must have a valid GATE score or have qualified UGC or CSIR-NET JRF.

PhD (Geoscience)
The candidates must have a master's degree in Geology/Geophysics/Earth Science or equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (on a 10-point scale).
OR
The candidates must have a Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree with a minimum of 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA (on a 10-point scale) with a consistently good academic record. 
The candidates must have scored at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (on 10 point scale) in all other examinations. However, one relaxation (up to 10% marks) either at Xth or XIIth level examination is allowed.
The candidate must have a valid GATE score or have qualified UGC or CSIR-NET JRF.

PhD (Climate Sciences)
The candidates must have a Master's or equivalent degree in Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ Oceanography/ Meteorology/ Marine Science/ Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences/Earth Science/ Mechanical/ Civil/ Electrical/ ECE/ Geoinformatics/ Remote Sensing/ Computer Science. They must have secured at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale).
OR
The candidates must have a B.Tech or BE or equivalent degree with a minimum of 70% marks or 7.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale) with a valid GATE score or have secured a UGC/CSIR-NET JRF. They must have a good academic track record.
OR
The candidates must have a Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree in Mathematics with at least 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA (on a 10-point scale). The candidates must have scored at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (on 10 point scale) in all other examinations. However, one relaxation (up to 10% marks) either at Xth or XIIth level examination is allowed. 
The candidate must have a valid GATE score in Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences (XE-H) or Valid GATE from other appropriate disciplines or have secured a UGC/CSIR-NET JRF/INSPIRE, or any other National Fellowship.

PhD (HSS&M)
The candidates must have a Master's degree with a minimum of 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA (on a 10-point scale).
The candidates must have scored at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (on 10 point scale) in all other examinations. However, one relaxation (up to 10% marks) either at Xth or XIIth level examination is allowed.
The candidate must have qualified UGC-NET(JRF and LS).

Important Note: There will be a relaxation of 5% marks in all academic examinations for the SC/ST/PwD candidates. 

How to Apply

Admission seekers must visit the official website of IIT, Bhubaneswar and read the instructions carefully before applying. The application form is available on the official website and can be filled online by accessing the website or the link given in the useful links. First, the candidate will have to register himself on the online portal by entering a valid email ID. After registration, the candidates will have to log in to the online portal using the login credential received after registration and fill the application. The candidates must recheck the information filled in the application form and click on the "Save & Submit" button to submit their application. The candidates will have to pay an application fee except for female candidates. After successful payment SB Collect Reference No. must be noted and click on the "Confirm & Submit Payment Details for " Button present at the "User Home" Tab and provide the fee payment details and then submit. After completion of the application process, the candidate must take a print of the application form for future reference.

Application Fee

The candidates will have to pay a non-refundable fee along with the application except for female candidates. Details of application fee are as follows:
  • For General and OBC Candidates: Rs. 500/- 
  • For SC/ST/PwD Candidates: Rs. 250/- 
  • For Foreign Nationals: USD 50 (for all categories)
