About the Programme
The Office of International Relations at IIT Kharagpur and the University of Manchester, UK has announced a Dual PhD programme and is currently inviting applications for the Joint Degree Program for 17 approved projects.

Duration of the Program
The dual PhD programme is a time-bound programme and will be of four years duration. The term will start in July 2021.
Number of Scholarships
In the program, there is a total of 5 positions with scholarship including 3 further top-up scholarships from UniMan.
Time allocation between Institutions
The time will be allocated between IIT Kharagpur-University of Manchester as follows:
Year 1: Entire coursework of the PhD programme will be completed in the first two semesters (first year) and will be spent at IIT-KGP. The preliminary research activity will also be started in the first year itself under joint supervision. In the first ten months, a comprehensive exam must be taken at IIT Kharagpur and cleared. The candidates can attempt a maximum of twice in the comprehensive exam. After two successful attempts in the comprehensive exam, the candidates will be asked to leave the programme. Same is the case, if the course grade is 'D' or lower.
Year 2:After successful completion of a comprehensive exam, students will continue research at the University of Manchester in the second year. In this stage, supervisors from both sides (IIT-KGP & University of Manchester, UK) monitors this program continually. Registration Seminar gave in Manchester.
Year 3: Now, research will be continued at Kharagpur and Manchester. In this stage, supervisors from both sides (IIT-KGP & University of Manchester, UK) monitors this program continuously. Enhancement Seminar will be given in Kharagpur.
Year 4: In the fourth year, the thesis work will be completed and submitted to both institutions and sent for examination as per the institution's rules and regulation. A synopsis seminar will be conducted at IIT-KGP. IIT Kharagpur will send the thesis to the Indian and Foreign Examiners for review. After acceptance from the examiners, a defence seminar will be organised as per IIT-KGP rules either in Manchester or Kharagpur depending on the location of the student. Evaluation and closed-door defence will be organised at Manchester as per the University of Manchester rules. Other sides will attend seminar through video conferencing.

Award of degree
A joint degree will be awarded to the student upon successful defends the thesis as per the requirement of each institution.
Tuition Fee: The tuition fee will be waived off by both University of Manchester and IIT-KGP.
Stipend: During the residency at IIT Kharagpur, students will be awarded a stipend at the prevailing JRF or SRF rates. The University of Manchester will also provide competitive scholarship opportunities to the students while the student is in residence at Manchester.
Post-study work visa: As per prevailing rules of the UK and India.
For Indian Nationals:
The candidates studying at IIT or IISc are eligible to Apply.
The candidate must hold a B.Tech or M.Tech or MSc degree from any IIT or IISc with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 on a scale of 10.
For the UK and other Nationals:
The candidate must hold a Bachelors or Masters degree in Science, Engineering or related fields from a globally reputed university (with QS rank within 500).
They must have secured a minimum of first-class or equivalent or minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0.
The candidates who wish to apply for the Dual PhD programme of IIT Kharagpur and the University of Manchester, UK can check the official notification available on the official websites of IIT-KGP and the University of Manchester, UK. Candidates can apply through the online portal of IIT-Kharagpur. After registration, the candidate must log in using login credentials and fill the application form. Initially, only one application form is required. Candidates will have to send other forms also if selected. An applicant can apply for one project only.

Selection of the candidates will be done by both institutions jointly and will involve two steps:
Applications will be evaluated by the supervisors from both institutions and recommend the names of the top candidates for the respective projects.
Based on the merit 5 positions for the scholarship will be selected by the Joint Programme Board involving members from IIT Kharagpur and the University of Manchester.
The selected students must qualify for the English proficiency test such as IELTS (score of 6.5) or TOEFL iBT (score of 90).
Key date: Application Window will remain open from 1st April 2021 till 23rd April 2021.
