Does Engineering make a beneficial contribution to the society?

Engineering has an effect on all aspects of everyday life. Since we all benefit from Engineering's results, it's moral to recognize the position of Engineering and how it responds to society's needs. In this article, I discuss how Engineering leads to societal well-being.

What is Engineering?

The use of science and mathematics to solve problems is known as engineering. Engineers sort out how things work and apply experimental findings in realistic ways. Scientists and inventors are often credited with inventions that improve the social experience, but engineers are liable for making such advancements open to the remainder of the world.

What is the role of an Engineer?

Engineers evaluate, design, create, examine, execute and manage a wide range of goods and applications. They correspondingly endorse and postulate resources and methods, supervise manufacture and installation, carry out breakdown assessments, provide referring services, and educating engineering students at higher learning institutions.

  • To provide solutions to evolving problems: Engineers must not pick and choose the hitches they are interested in solving. They need to resolve conflicts and unexpected issues, and their answers must accomplish several goals. Efficiency always comes at a cost, protection adds to the difficulty, and higher performance adds to the weight
  • To meet economic and efficiency constraints: When a multitude of variables are taken into account, the engineering method is the best option, producing the best result. It may be the most dependable under a certain weight range, the easiest to meet certain safety criteria, or the most cost-effective. The social and environmental costs of many engineering issues are high. To say in simple means – an engineer's decision should be efficient and economical
  • To provide energy sustainability: Energy and materials are two kinds of natural resources that engineers use. The primary fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas are the energies used by engineers. Considering the depleting nature of these fuels, engineers must be concerned with the continuous production of new resources (renewable energy harnessing) and the efficient utilization of current resources. Material qualities are valuable to engineers because of their firmness, convenience of manufacturing, portability, or longevity; capacity to isolate or transmit; and chemical, electrical, or acoustic qualities
  • To provide educational endeavour: Engineers play a part in guiding and counselling students at the high school level who are making career decisions by sensitizing them to the technological and engineering disciplines. Engineers in tertiary institutions, such as Polytechnics and Universities, educate undergraduates by guiding them through the practical knowledge of their various engineering fields, thus influencing them with their abundance of knowledge and practice. Engineers teach undergraduates the importance of entrepreneurship skills for long-term growth rather than pursuing and engaging in get-rich-quick schemes

Impact on the global economy

Economic development is the growth of a country's or region's economic capital for the benefit of its people. Economic growth is a continual mechanism that leads to an improvement in per capita revenue, as well as the provision of basic needs and benefits to the general population.

Science and technology are critical to every country's economic growth. Science and technology acceptance is the most important feature of technological, economic, and social progress. Through the application of infrastructure programs, the engineering economy is a significant part of the country's overall economy. It entails a cost-benefit review of the programs under consideration.

Engineering is critical to a country's economic growth and development as well as its residents' quality of life. As a result, a country's engineering capability and economic progress are inextricably linked. The investment in the formation of new ideas through innovation and the production of new goods and services, technological transfer, and the building of viable infrastructure promotes a country's economic growth.

The construction of infrastructures such as highways, railways as well as information and transportation networks, in addition to the generation of skills through academic teaching, learning and practising, all contribute to economic growth. Many of these factors have to do with engineers' jobs and engineering education.

As an Engineer, let me conclude this article as Engineers are the cornerstone of a culture that is based on the service sector. They play a variety of roles in society when it comes to economic growth. They will help with infrastructure growth, agricultural production, environmental protection, academic collaboration, social and ethical issues, and the energy crisis, among other things. Engineers face a huge obstacle in making use of the country's natural capital.
