Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune invites applications for its PhD program commencing in July 2021. You can apply to more than one Department, but for each, you will need to submit a separate application and pay the fee for each as well.

About DIAT PhD program

It is highly beneficial to enroll in a DIAT Ph.D. program for quite a few reasons. The course fee is reasonable, you can avail of financial assistance, and you will be working on high-quality research areas that are primarily focusing on defense-related and other technologies. What's more, candidates who wish to enroll for a DIAT Ph.D. under the sponsorship of the MoD DRDO & Services, and external part-time research scholars can also apply. Such candidates should check the official notification to ensure the relevant eligibility requirements they need to fulfill before submitting their online applications.



DIAT Ph.D. course fee

Fee for institutional scholarship enrolled candidates: Once selected for a DIAT Ph.D. program, on joining itself you are required to pay a fee of Rs. 31,000/- per semester (for General and OBC category candidates). The fee is Rs. 18,000/- for SC and ST category candidates. You must also pay a caution deposit of Rs.10,000/-. There may be additional fees up to submitting the Ph.D. thesis.
Fee for MoD-sponsored (DRDO) candidates: The semester fee is Rs. 50,000/- per semester, to be paid on joining.

Fee for self-sponsored (Service Officers) candidates: The semester fee is Rs. 15,000/- per semester for General and OBC category candidates, and Rs. 10,000/- for SC and ST category candidates, to be paid on joining along with a caution deposit of Rs.10,000/-.

Financial support and Grant

You can avail of Fellowships and if selected, you are required to provide support in research work as well as teaching activities on a weekly basis of a maximum of 10 hours alongside your other responsibilities. Once admitted to a Ph.D. program, you will receive a contingency grant, which is Rs.15,000/- per year for the current academic year.

Hostel facility

There is separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls. As of now, you have to pay a monthly charge of Rs.7000/- for boarding and lodging (this may be revised) and mess facilities are also available on payment of the same. To avail of hostel accommodation, you need to pay Rs. 40,000/- in advance as a deposit at the start of every semester, and a security deposit of Rs.10,000/- has also to be paid at the hostel office.

DIAT PhD Eligibility criteria

Educational Qualification: You should have a Master of Engineering/Master of Technology (or equivalent) for pursuing a Ph.D. in Engineering/Science, and a Master in Science (M.Sc. or equivalent) for pursuing a Ph.D. in Science. In the relevant qualifying degree, you should have a minimum of 55% marks (or equivalent CGPA/DGPA) which may be relaxed by 5% if you are applying through the SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) / PWD – (Divyang) category.

Age: The age criteria is maximum of 30 years as on 1st July 2021, which will be relaxed as per the Central Govt. norms for those applying in the SC, ST, OBC, and PH categories.



You are also eligible to apply for a DIAT Ph.D. program if -
  1. You are a recipient of a National Doctoral Fellowship or other fellowships from a government or semi-government organization, such as Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Dept. of Biotechnology (DBT), University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), etc.

  2. You have qualified in a national level test such as CSIR/UGC NET, Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE), Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship, NBHM, etc.

DIAT PhD program application procedure

You have to submit your application only in the online mode by first creating a user ID and password at DIAT PhD program admissions portal. Ensure that you read all the instructions carefully prior to applying, and select the department in the online application form.

First, though, you must pay the application fee of Rs.500/- if you are applying in the General or OBC or EWS Category. The fee is Rs. 250/- for women and for those applying in the reserved categories of SC or ST or PwD. There are two options to pay the application fee- (i) in the online mode through State Bank Collect; or (ii) by Demand Draft (DD) drawn in favour of Vice-Chancellor, DIAT, Pune, payable at Pune. The online payment ID / Details of Demand Draft have to be entered at the relevant place on the online application form.

On successful submission of the online application, take a printout of the application acknowledgment that is automatically generated by the system after you have uploaded the application. This printout has to be sent by postal mail in a sealed envelope, along with relevant documents, superscribed "Application for Admission to Ph.D. Programme in the Department of ______" to-

Documents to be sent are-
  1. DD with details written on its reverse side or the online payment receipt, whichever is applicable.

  2. Attested copy of certificate in support of date of birth

  3. Attested copy of Intermediate or (10+2) Certificate

  4. Attested copies of Degree Certificates and Marks of the qualifying exams .

  5. Attested copy of Caste Certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed format as stipulated by Government of India in case of SC/ ST/OBC/EWS/PH category candidates.

  6. GATE Score Card.

Ensure, too, that you have put a photograph and signature on the application form.

Note - Without the receipt of the acknowledgment and the online generated receipt / Demand Draft, your application will not be processed at all.



Important dates

Last date of submission of online applications: 23rd June 2021, up to 5.30 p.m. (excuses about delays in postal dispatch will not be accepted).
Last date of receipt of the hard copy of the application and relevant documents: 30th June 2021 (excuses about delays in postal dispatch will not be accepted).
Tentative Date of Interview / Written Test: Third or fourth week of July 2021.
Tentative commencement of the program: July 2021.

After applying

If you fulfill all the eligibility requirements and your application is successfully processed, you will have to appear for an entrance exam (written test) to be conducted by the Department with which you will be pursuing the Ph.D. program. Subsequently, there will be a personal interview as well. However, the screening committee may decide subject-wise, and category-wise cut-off scores of GATE/NET, in order to shortlist candidates.

All details, including the list of candidates who are shortlisted for the interview, the dates of the written test and interview, and the date of the result will be displayed on the official DIAT website.
