1. Tamil Nadu Government Music College, Chennai

In the year 1949, in order to protect the music wealth in Tamil Nadu, the Central Government and State Government of Tamil Nadu together had started the Central College of Carnatic Music at Chennai. It is one of the popular and oldest music colleges in Tamil Nadu. In 1957, the State Government took the responsibility to manage the college administration under the education department. Later, in 1980, the control of the management was shifted to the Director of Collegiate Education, Tamil Nadu. But in the year 1991, after the origin of the Department of Art and Culture, the Tamil Nadu Government Music College, Chennai was moved under the Art and Culture Department, Tamil Nadu.

Besides musicology, the college was initially focused on music training in Vocal, Violin and Veena. But later, a lot of music departments were introduced at the college to offer various degree courses in instrumental and folk music. Since 2014, Tamil Nadu Government Music College, Chennai is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr.J Jayalalithaa Music and Fine Arts University. 2. Tamil Nadu Government Music College, Thiruvaiyaru

To preserve the classical Tamil heritage and to teach all the practical forms of music to the students, the Government Music College was started at Thiruvaiyaru in the year 1965 as a part of Raja's College under the University of Madras. Along with other forms of music, the college also focuses more on Tamil Heritage Music on Folk art forms. From 1983 to 1997, the college was affiliated to Bharathidasan University and was later brought under the Art and Culture Department of the Tamil Nadu Government. Currently, the Government Music College, Thiruvaiyaru is functioning under the affiliation of TNMFAU.

3. Tamil Nadu Government Music College, Madurai

For the benefit of the students from the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu, the government had started the Tamil Nadu Government Music College at Madurai in the year 1979. The college is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University. To enhance the ability of the students in Music, the Music and Arts Department of the college conducts an annual festival and music events every academic year. 4. Tamil Nadu Government Music College, Coimbatore

The Government Music College at Coimbatore was started in the year 1993 by Dr.J. Jayalalithaa. The college serves as the destination for music education for the people residing in the Western districts of Tamil Nadu. Initially, the college was offering courses on Musicology, Vocal, Veena and Violin. Later, the dance course and music teacher training courses were introduced at the college. Currently, Government Music College, Coimbatore is considered to be one of the notable music colleges in Coimbatore.

Apart from the regular B.A. music courses and Diploma in Music programme, the college also conducts Evening classes in Music. In the evening music college, the students will be given two years of training on certificate courses in Vocal, Veena and Violin. Eligibility criteria for admission to Music degree courses


If you are interested in pursuing a diploma, UG or PG degree in Music from any of the above-mentioned Government Music Colleges in Tamil Nadu, you must satisfy the following eligible eligibility conditions as prescribed by the TNMFAU.

3-year Diploma courses
Academic qualification: A pass in Class 10 from a recognized education board
Age: 16 years to 21 years

2-year Post Diploma course in Nattuvangam
Academic qualification: A pass in Class 10 with a Diploma in Bharathanatyam or a degree in Bharathanatyam.
Age: 16 years to 25 years

Diploma in Music Teaching
Academic qualification: A pass in Class 10 with a Diploma or a Degree in Music.
Age: 16 years to 25 years

B.A courses
Academic qualification: A pass in Class 10 or any equivalent from a recognized education board
Age: 17 years to 22 years

M.A courses
Academic qualification: A degree in music
Age: No age limit

Certificate courses (Evening College)
Academic qualification: A pass in Class 10(SSLC) from a recognized education board.
Age: Above 16 years
