Duration of the PhD Programme PhD programmes of the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela are of five years' duration.

The fee is to be paid at the beginning of each semester. The fee from the 2nd semester onwards will be Rs.44,000/- per semester for General Category students and Rs.36,500 /- for SC/ST category students. This fee is inclusive of Mess dues also. In case, any student withdraws his/her admission, the fee paid will not be refunded except the Mess fee after clearing dues.Eligibility Criteria for PhD Programmes
Biotechnology and Medical Engineering (BM): The candidates must have ME or BE (with GATE) in Medicine/ Dental/Pharmacy/Veterinary or MSc in Biotechnology / Life Sciences / Physics / Chemistry / Allied Sciences. They must have secured 1st class in UG and PG degree with a valid GATE / NET / BET /GPAT score or any National level eligibility test.
Civil Engineering (CE), Electronics & Communication Engineering (EC), Mechanical Engineering (ME): The candidates must have MTech or BTech (with GATE) in relevant engineering subjects.
Chemical Engineering (CH): MTech or BTech (with GATE) or MSc (with GATE) in Chemical Engineering.
Ceramic Engineering (CR): The candidates must have passed MTech /BTech (with GATE) in Ceramic / Metallurgical and Materials / Chemical / Mechanical Engg. / Biomedical Engg / Nanotechnology / Biotechnology or MSc (with GATE) in Physics / Chemistry / Materials Science / Nano Science.
Computer Science & Engineering (CS): MTech/BTech (with GATE/any National level fellowship) in any relevant branch of engineering or MCA OR MSc (with GATE/ Any National Level fellowship) in any relevant discipline.
Food Process Engineering (FP): The candidate must hold BTech with MTech in Food Processing Engineering / Food Technology / Agricultural Process Engineering or any relevant area.
Metallurgical & Materials Engineering (MM), Mining Engineering (MN): BTech/MTech or MSc in any relevant discipline.
Electrical Engineering (EE): MTech/ME/MS or BE /BTech (with GATE) in Electrical/ Electronics/ Communications/ Computer Science/Instrumentation / Control Engineering.
Earth & Atmospheric Science (ER): MSc / MTech in Geology / Applied Geology / Geophysics / Environmental Science / Remote Sensing / Chemistry / Physics / Atmospheric Science / Meteorology / Oceanography / Mathematics or BTech or MTech in relevant discipline.
Planning & Architecture (PA): BArch with MArch/ MPlan / MCP / MURP / MUP / MTRP / MTech or equivalent(with GATE).
Chemistry (CY), Life Sciences (LS): MSc or BPharm or MPharm OR BTech or MTech or MS in relevant discipline.
Mathematics (MA): MSc or MCA or OR BTech / MTech in any relevant discipline.
Physics and Astronomy (PH): MSc in Physics or B.Tech in any branch of Engineering.
School of Management (SM): MTech or MBA or MA or MSc or MCom or MPharma or BTech or CA (Final) from ICAI OR LLM(LAW)
Humanities and Social Sciences (HS): MSc or MA or BTech or MTech or MBA with UGC NET/JRF
Industrial Design (ID): BDes/BE/BTech with MDes/ME/MTech in any discipline.
Note: To be eligible for admission in PhD programme at NIT Rourkela, the candidates with ME/MTech/MScEngg/MPharm/MArch/MPlan/MDes/MBBS/BVSc/ MA/MCom/MBA/MSc must have scored 60% marks or 1st Division in qualifying exam. Students with ME/MTech/MSc Engg/MPharm/MArch/MPlan/MDes must have secured 65% marks.How to Apply
The candidates who wish to join the Ph.D. program must visit the official website of NIT, Rourkela and read the instructions given in the official advertisement carefully before applying. To, apply online the candidate must submit their application through the online application portal (link provided at the end of this article).
For registration, candidates need to provide their full name, date of birth, email address, mobile number. After registration, the candidate must log in using login credentials to fill the online application form. application form can be filled online by login using login credentials. Before filling the application form, the candidate must pay the application fee online via SBI Collect.
Application Fee Payment
Application is Rs. 500/- to be paid through SBI Collect (online mode) only. Candidate must login SBI net banking and search SBI COLLECT -> ODISHA ->EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION -> DIRECTOR NIT ROURKELA -> PhD APPLICATION FEE. After fee payment, the SB Collect Reference Number must be noted down. It is to be filled in the application form.
Please note that the application fee is non-refundable and will not be refunded under any circumstances. Application without SBI Collect Reference number will not be considered.
Sponsored candidates must upload a scanned copy of the sponsorship certificate along with the application. Other candidates need not upload any documents. However, selected candidates will be asked to submit signed copies of all certificates and original sponsored certificates and produce original certificates at the time of interview for verification.Selection Procedure
Selection of the students for the Ph.D. program will be made based on performance in the written test and interviews. Apart from this, academic records, qualifications and candidates' research interests as per available research area will also be taken into consideration at the time of selection of suitable candidates. Thus, a thorough evaluation process will be followed for the final selection of the candidates.
