ICMR-National Institute of Virology Pune PhD Programs admissions 2021-22

About Institute

ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune was established in 1952 as Virus Research Centre (VRC). Since then the Institute is continuously engaged in the research on arboviruses and their arthropod vectors, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Rotavirus gastroenteritis, acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis, Rabies, Herpes simplex, Buffalo pox, Measles, and Poliomyelitis etc. In 1978, the institute was renamed as National Institute of Virology (NIV). Currently, NIV Pune is inviting applications for admission in PhD programmes for sessions 2021-22 from highly motivated Indian students. Students with fellowship can apply for the same.

Subjects available for PhD


Intake Capacity: A total of fifteen seats are available in the subjects, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Basic Medical Science and Biochemistry
Duration of the PhD Programme: PhD programmes will be of five years' duration.

Financial Assistance

The candidates who have qualified for any national level test such as CSIR/ UGC/ ICMR/ DBT/BINC or DST-INSPIRE and have a valid fellowship are only eligible to apply. Please note that the candidates with GATE or V CSIR-UGC (NET-LS), DBT- Category II and JRF under research schemes of ICMR will not be considered for PhD admission. National Institute of Virology will not provide any fellowship or financial support to the candidates.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Programmes

To be eligible for admission at the National Institute of Virology, Pune, the candidate must fulfil the minimum eligibility requirements.
  • The candidates must have a Master's degree in any branch of Life Sciences or Biotechnology or Bioinformatics from a recognised university.
  • They must have secured a minimum of 55% or equivalent Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • Students should have a valid Junior Research Fellowship from CSIR/ UGC/ ICMR/ DBT/BINC or DST-INSPIRE fellowship or teacher fellowship.
  • Students who are waiting for MSc final result by July 31.,2021 and have can also apply for PhD admission. But their selection will be provisional and subject to fulfilling eligibility criteria.
  • The terms and conditions of the fellowship will be as per the norms of the respective funding agencies.

Age Limit

The upper age limit for JRF shall be 28 years, and for SRF as prescribed by the respective funding agency. Age relaxation of up to five years will be given to the candidates belonging to SC/ST/Women/PWD and up to 3 years in the case of OBC candidates.



Reservation Policy

There will be a provision of reservation but it will be given to the Students belonging to the reserved category of Maharashtra state only. These students will get 5% of relaxation. Reservation will be as per the Savitribai Phule Pune University PhD admission guidelines.

How to Apply

The candidates who wish to join the PhD programme of ICMR-NIV must visit the News & Events section of the official website of the National Institute of Virology, Pune and read the instructions given in the official advertisement carefully before applying. To apply the candidate must download the application form from the official website or the link provided at the end of this article. After downloading and printing, the application form must be filled. Scanned copies of required documents are to be annexed with the application form and should be emailed to phdacademiccell@email.com as a single PDF on or before the last date. Please also mention 'Application for PhD admission 2021-22, in the subject line of the email.

  • Fellowship award letter
  • Birth certificate or proof of birth
  • Caste certificate (In case of SC or ST candidates)
  • A valid Non-creamy certificate along with the application (In case of DT-NT and OBC candidates)
  • Latest Income and Asset Certificate from the Competent Authority (In case of EWS category students)

Selection Procedure

Selection of the students for the PhD programme will be made based on their performance in personal interviews. Students will be shortlisted and will be called for the personal interviews that will be held ICMR NIV, Pune. The name of the shortlisted students for interviews and interview schedules will be displayed on the official website of NIV Pune or ICMR websites. The interview will be conducted either through online or offline mode that will be communicated to the candidates in due course of time.
