The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has announced applications open on 12th July for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) program. The Fellowship program receives direct financial support from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and is implemented by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It is aimed to encourage you to take up research in a subject in B.S. (Basic Sciences) and move on from there to a full-fledged research career. A computer-based online version of the Aptitude Test will be conducted in selected cities, but the test date may be postponed due to the current pandemic situation. The scores of this test will be the sole basis for selection for the Fellowship, and there will be no interviews.

The KVPY fellowship is offered up to the pre-PhD level or a maximum of five years, whichever is earlier. A fixed number of fellowships are exclusively reserved for meritorious SC/ST students, as well as for deserving Persons With Disabilities (PwD), namely physically and visually challenged students, Once enrolled for the Fellowship, you cannot opt-out of the basic science stream. If you do so, then the Fellowship and Contingency Grant will immediately be terminated. The B.S. courses that you can enroll in are- B.Sc./B.S./B. Stat./B. Math./Integrated M.Sc./Integrated M.S.
You can apply for KVPY Fellowships through one of three streams, as per the Class in which you will be taking up the academic study of Basic Science. These are- Stream SA, Stream SX, and Stream SB. The monthly Fellowship and the annual contingency Grant is as follows-
On selection and enrollment to KVPY, you will get an ID card that will get you access to library and lab facilities in the colleges or universities (as applicable) that have agreed to provide these to valid card-holders of KVPY.
While you study a Basic Science course at the school or junior college or university level, as the case may be, you need to ensure that you have a minimum level of academic performance of a First class or 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate or equivalent grade points. You must also pass all the subjects prescribed for that particular academic year (two semesters in the case of the semester system) and obtained the aforementioned percentage. If this percentage is not maintained, the Fellowship will be discontinued. It is also mandatory to showcase satisfactory performance in the requisite summer camp in the first year and in the summer project every year for the continuation of the Fellowship.
It should be noted here that it is essential that the marks/grades of each academic year are official certified by the Dean or Head of the Institution.
Eligibility requirements for KVPY Fellowships 2021 You can apply for the KVPY Fellowship only if you have enrolled as a regular student of a UG Program in Basic Science course in any College/Institution of a University recognized in India. Indian Nationals, as well as OCI/PIO students, are required to appear for the KVPY Aptitude Test 2021 in order to be eligible to receive the Fellowship.
Eligibility for Stream SA
Due to the current pandemic, only on a one-time basis, this year, if you have passed the Class 10 Board exam and are eligible to enroll in Class XI in a science subject during the academic year 2021-22, then you are eligible to appear for the aptitude test. You will be required to produce a study certificate of Class XI class once you are selected as a provisional KVPY fellow. Also, note that the Fellowship under this stream will be activated only if you join the UG course in Basic Science in the academic year 2023-24 after having getting min. 60% marks in aggregate (50% for SC/ST & PWD) in science subjects in the Class XII Board exam. During the interim period of one year, you will be invited to the National Science Camp for which the travel & other expenses will be covered by KVPY.Eligibility for Stream SX
You should be enrolled in Class XII in a science subject during the academic year 2021–2021 and are aspiring to join a UG program in Basic Sciences during the academic year 2022–23. The Fellowship will begin only if you join the UG course in Basic Science in the academic year 2022-23 after having secured a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate (50% for SC/ST & PWD) in science subjects in the Class XII Board exam.Eligibility for Stream SB
Due to the current pandemic, only on a one-time basis, this year, if you have passed the Class XII Board exam and are eligible to enroll in the first year of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int.M.S. during the academic year 2021–22, then you are eligible to appear for the aptitude test. You will be required to produce a study certificate of the first year of B. Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. once you are selected as a provisional KVPY Fellow. The Fellowship will begin only if you join an undergraduate program in Basic Science in the academic year 2021-22 and secured at least 60% marks in aggregate (50% for SC/ST & PWD) in science subjects in the first year of the Basic Science course. You have to apply online at the official KVPY Fellowship website. Ensure that you indicate the stream under which you are applying, namely SA or SX, or SB.
The non-refundable application fee is Rs. 1,250/- for General category candidates, and Rs. 625/- for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
