Introduction
JSS College of Pharmacy was established in 1980 in Ooty in the state of Tamil Nadu with a vision to provide job-oriented professional courses in Pharmacy. It has got A+ accreditation from NAAC. The college offers various degrees, diplomas, and certificate courses in the field of pharmacy education. JSS College of Pharmacy is a constituent of the JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research (formerly known as JSS University), which is a Deemed to be University located in Mysuru, Karnataka. There are two Pharmacy colleges under it one is JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty (Tamil Nadu) and the other is with the same name in Mysuru (Karnataka). JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty claims the concept of 'Smart Campus' developed and incorporated in their college through various measures like ICT Enabled Campus, Drug Information Services, Responsibility towards Society by adopting tribal villages, Learning Management System (Education and Research), and Physical Security and Surveillance.

NIRF (National Institute Ranking Framework) ranking system was started by the Govt, in the year 2016 under which the educational institutes are ranked based on some select parameters. This year about 6000 institutes pertaining to different disciplines have participated in this and the rankings are announced. The ranking of the various institutions is done under various categories like university, engineering, college, medical, management, pharmacy, law, architecture, dental, and research. There is one overall national ranking category also. The institutions are assessed based on five parameters which are - 1) teaching, learning, and resources (TLR), 2) research and professional practices (RP), 3) graduation outcomes (GO), 4) outreach and inclusivity (OI), and 5) perception (PR). Under each of these parameters, there are sub-parameters having individual weightages.
JSS College of Pharmacy is announced by NIRF as the top Pharmacy college as per NIRF ranking in the state of Tamil Nadu and is in 7th rank on an all-India basis. Most of these are very important parameters for the good performance and success of an institution and that is the reason that JSS College has come on the top in the Tamil Nadu state by scoring well under these performance indicators. In the remaining 6 subcategories, that is, Financial Resources and their Utilisation (FRU), Publications (PU), Quality of Publications (QP), Patents: Published and Granted (IPR), Footprint of Projects and Professional Practice (FPPP), and Economically and Socially Challenged Students (ESCS), the college has not fared so well as under the other 11 subcategories but on an overall, it bagged the top-ranked position in Tamil Nadu and if it tries to improve further on these 6 fronts also then in future NIRF rankings it can not only top the state of Tamil Nadu but improve its position in the country also from the 7th at present to upwards. The college library has got a very good collection of books (about 11000), journals, periodicals, and reference material related to pharmaceutical as well as other medical information. For locating the resources quickly the Library Management Software 'Easy-lib' is installed and the library functions in a fully computerized pattern. There are 25 PCs available in the library for the use of the students. There is also a good arrangement of sitting for the students in the library for self-study and also for referring the resources.
College is having a good hostel facility for boys as well as girls and the hostels are very spacious and can accommodate about 250 students in each of them. There is a mess facility available in both the hostels and good quality healthy food is provided to the residents. Hostel supervisors keep a strict vigil on the kitchen activities and upkeep of the rooms in the hostel to provide proper hygiene and cleanliness in the hostel.
For pharmaceutical and drug experiments on animals, there is an animal house facility, housing animals like rats, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits, available in the college and is registered as a Small Animal Facility with the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA), under the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
There is one Drug and Poison Information Centre (DIC) under the Head, Department of Pharmacy Practice under the supervision of Principal, JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty but it is physically located in Government District Headquarters Hospital, Ooty for facilitating the health care professionals to query and ask their drug and therapeutics-related information and doubts so that they can support their patients in a better way.
There is one Placement Cell in the college that is coordinating and guiding the students for making a career in the pharmaceutical industry. The activities of the placement cell are aligned in the direction of the student's expectations and dreams for making a career. The college has regular communication and connections with the industries and companies not only in India but also abroad and has a large number of options where the students can apply for a job. The placement cell is in continuous touch with so many companies, top hospitals, academic institutions, and other organizations where campus placements are made regularly.
There are sufficient sports and other extracurricular activities undertaken by students around the year for their overall personality development. College provides ample facilities and opportunities for that. Also, there are many activities in the college where the students can volunteer to participate and learn their responsibilities towards society. Some of these activities are done under the National Service Scheme (NSS), Youth Red Cross, Rotary Club, Energy Conservation Programme, Water conservation program, Recycling program, etc.
The college has a Wi-Fi enabled campus for easy connectivity everywhere, there is an auditorium having a capacity of 500 for holding seminars and functions, a well-equipped gym is also available for the students, there is a bank extension counter and ATM, and proper power back up facility in case the main power supply fails.
